Background

"We look upon authority too often and focus on it in an often all-too scrutinizing light, as if there is something wrong with the idea authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Perhaps it comes out of our histories. What we don't see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, to fulfill their dreams and their destinies. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do."

Taxation

Senator Petrelli supports the FairTax proposal that calls for eliminating the Internal Revenue Service and the income tax and replacing it with a progressive national sales tax of between tax inclusive 19 and 23 percent on newly manufactured items and services. As compensation for necessities, such as food, there would be a “prebate” to untax households up to the poverty level. He calculates that an average family of three that lives below the poverty level would receive an additional $3,000 a year.

National Health Care

In his campaign pronouncements Senator Petrelli has identified medicine and medical technology costs as 'one of the leading causes of bankruptcies'. He is an advocate for a universal healthcare system that provides equal medical services to all citizens, paid for by a retail sales tax (a portion of the Progressive Fair tax).

He proposes a National Health Care Voucher plan. Using vouchers paid for by the government, patients would be free to choose their own doctor.

Energy and the Environment

The Energy Security Agenda sets out a strategy to dramatically reduce U.S. reliance on foreign energy and to cut the United States' carbon emissions. It also calls for replacing the Department of Energy with a new Department of Energy Security, to oversee and redefine the federal government’s role in energy policy. The reorganized department will act as an institutional advocate for innovation in energy policy, and will ensure accountability as the nation works towards achieving its energy security goals. Through this new department, America’s overriding objective in energy policy will be to make America the unquestioned leader in clean energy, enhancing our national security and our economic strength.

Gun Control

Nathan Petelli's Presidential campaign states that Senator Petrelli "fully supports the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution." It also states that he advocates a licensing program whereby a potential gun owner must be licensed as well as properly trained with a firearm before they may own one.

The Linderman Act

In July 2007, Petrelli, alongside Democratic and Republican members of the Senate, reached across party lines and proposed the Linderman Act, requiring the development of tests to identify Evolved individuals, the registration of their identities and abilities, and the confinement of any deemed too dangerous to be left free.

Inauguration

"My fellow Americans, it has been a rough road for us. The past two years have been uncertain and half-blinded by the light of the revelation that we as a people have changed - we as a people have Evolved. The task ahead of all of us is humbling in it's scale. It's time to adapt to the changes that have occurred.

"It will take unity. Those timeless words ring true now more than ever: united we stand, divided we fall. It is my mission for America that we will remain as one. Not divide between race, beliefs, or genetics. And for this to be accomplished, it will take sacrifice. We face a time of hard decisions, questions of liberty, morals and ethics. We must do what we can to remain strong. We need to do what we can to protect those that would jeopardize us, and jeopardize themselves, by whatever means necessary.

"All that can be asked is for faith in our people, faith in our country, and faith in all that will be."
