What's up, danger?

Don't be a stranger

'Cause I like high chances that I might lose

I like it all on the edge just like you

I like tall buildings so I can leap off of 'em

I go hard with it no matter how dark it is

- What's Up, Danger? - Blackway & Black Caviar

Appendices

Hooks

Known To Most

  • Monica is currently the President of the Deveaux Society after her predecessors all… retried (for various definitions of retired). Her employees know her as a supportive and irreverent leader, but fierce when the occasion calls for it.
  • Her left arm is missing, but she has a fancy cybernetic one in its place.
  • Once Upon A Time, Monica was a freedom fighter-slash-terrorist. While the details of her exploits are mostly not known, it is known that she had her fingers is just about every group of rebels that New York had between the two bombs. (Not Messiah, though, the red scarf was not for her.) Her record, now cleared, was once very colorful.
  • She worked with a medical unit during the war, mostly in triage and security. Some bedside duties, too. If you were injured, you might have met her.

Known To Some

  • She was at the showdown at the Mount Natazhat Complex in Alaska that helped tear down a good portion of The Commonwealth Institute. She lost her arm here.
  • What was left of her (immediate) family died during the Second Civil War and she did not take it well. It was what got her to join the war effort in the first place, despite her handicap.
  • Even JJ Jones was presumed dead after he was missing in action in Oregon in 2013. She also did not take this well.

Known To Few

  • Monica did work in corporate espionage and assassinations for Yamagato in exchange for a cybernetic arm. She lost both her position and arm early 2019.
  • She has a son from the future. A future.

Relationships

peyton_icon.gif
Peyton is the only link to her old life that Monica didn't sever after the incident in Alaska. She views her as something like a sister, and has made sure to keep in touch as best she can. She's thrilled to have her and Jonah in New York and to be able to see them again in person. Peyton is the only person that Monica feels like herself with, her old self. And Jonah gets to be the recipient of an embarrassing amount of affection from Monica. She would do anything for these two, anything to keep them safe and protected. Thelma and Louise (Horrorpops)
cesar_icon.gif
Cesar is a SESA agent that has endeared himself to Monica by way of his views on things like justice and equal rights, yes, but also by his charm and easy demeanor. She finds him easy to hang out with, and it's one of those friendship where they can sit in silence and not feel awkward. But, rather, better for the company. They do also fall under the with benefits category of friendships. Whenever she's in town, he gets a call. Rose-Colored Boy (Paramore)
marlowe_icon.gif
Marlowe was part of the team that worked on Monica's cybernetic arm, but over the years became a close and trusted friend. She is the only person working for Yamagato that Monica trusts at all. Since being fired, Marlowe is the only link to Yamagato that Monica has kept up, because losing her friend would have been just too much. Not just a friend, but a sister. Marlowe has been gifted with Moni's pet bird, Foggy, since Monica had to move out of the swanky apartments. Weird Science (Oingo Boingo)
asi_icon.gif
Monica met Asi during a strange time. Suspicion was everywhere at Yamagato, but she found herself needing to trust someone and Asi was it. But since then, Asi has been there for her in some desperate times and what was once a connection out of necessity has become an important friendship that Monica treasures. With Asi trying to live under the radar, Monica hopes to lighten her load until better times come along. And maybe after that, too. Birds of a Feather, We Rock Together (Vulfpeck)
richard3_icon.gif
Richard is a person Monica has always trusted. But she left him behind with all the others after Alaska, despite the pain he was working through at the time. Reconnecting with him has been a roller coaster, but ultimately the troubles invading New York and their lives are what stabilized it. Troubles and crises of confidence. She can't help but feel like their relationship improved this time around. Name (Goo Goo Dolls)
jiba_icon.gif
To Monica, Jiba is more than just AI. Jiba is as much a person to her as anyone else. She might have some affection for digital entities, but only some of it is left over from her cousin Micah. Of course, her affection for this particular digital entity has grown in a way she didn't notice. She lived for years with Jiba in her head and being separated from them has been a trauma she wasn't prepared for. Marching Orders (Andrea Wittgens)

Miscellaneous

  • Athletic stuff - parkour, hockey, football, track & field, figure skating, skiing, gymnastics, endurance training, fitness training, boxing, martial arts, wrestling, dancing, improvised weapons, brawling, she knows how to fight and can adapt her style on the fly.
  • Gun stuff - From sniper rifles to hand guns and the odd bazooka, if it can fire something, Monica can use it.
  • Knife stuff - small knives to daggers, she knows how to fight with them. Swords, also. Likes a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other.
  • Bomb stuff - she can craft explosives, even if she has to scavenge for the supplies. She can rig detonators and timers out of anything from watches to cell phones. All of this is a lot easier with better materials, but any bomb in a storm. Demolitions are now firmly inside of her wheelhouse.
  • Medical stuff - Monica knows general first aid, fixing dislocated joints, sewing up cuts, cleaning, bandaging, that sort of thing.
  • Spy stuff - Infiltration, misdirection/distraction, tracking, surveillance as well as lockpicking, safe cracking, data mining and recovery, search/investigation, alternate identities, disguises (and contouring, of course)
  • Crime clean up stuff - How to keep a kill clean, how to hide or otherwise dispose of a body, how to not leave evidence behind
  • Business stuff - Corporate practices and sabotage, she knows what is valuable information and what isn't. And how to screw it all up in the most subtle ways. And how to circumvent it.
  • Mechanic stuff - She can repair her own arm (er, the prosthetic one). Also older cars (things that would have survived the EMP).
  • Music stuff - Drums, guitar, bass guitar, singing
  • Handyman stuff - plumbing, woodwork, around-the-house repairs, decorating
  • Language stuff - French

New Stuff

  • Horse stuff - Monica learned to ride and handle horses while in Providence with Eileen and the Horsemen.
  • Dance stuff - Monica focused her dance skills a little more to help Cesar with an interesting undercover assignment.
  • Stabbing stuff - Monica learned specialized martial arts while in Japan, with a special interest in sword fighting.
