Background

Edward Ray presents himself as a brilliant mathematician and theoretical physicist teaching at MIT. For unknown reasons, the mysterious scientist had ventured to New York City, armed with information about Phoenix's leadership in an attempt to prevent some disastrous event from happening. Presumably it was the assassination of President-Elect Rickham, but there are reasons to believe that his motivations may run deeper than that. He also claims to know Mason Chesterfield, Catherine Chesterfield's father, despite a vast disparity in their ages.

Edward proved to be a useful tactician for Phoenix, aiding them in devising a plan to confront Kazimir Volken and the Vanguard in a fashion that would prevent billions of lives from being lost. Using the string theory devised by Hiro Nakamura, Edward Ray created a powerful plan to divert the course of history by stopping Volken at any cost.

In the aftermath of this plan, it was revealed that Edward was a man who would use any amount of life, no matter how signifcant, to meet his goals. Edward is a true pragmatic, caring about results more than the individual loss of human life. But, true to his word, his plan resulted in the defeat of Kazimir Volken.

However, Edward had created a second plan, one which he did not discuss with Phoenix that involved the murder of Nathan Petrelli. In an attempt to carry out this plan, Edward was captured by the Company, only to be sprung free later by a future iteration of himself who attempted to kill him and replace him. Edward escaped, and struggled to maneuver in a battle against his own genius to change what he saw coming in the future.

To this end, Edward manipulated the likes of Richard Cardinal and Tyler Case to help defeat his future self and the Pinehearst Company. But in the end, Edward was struck by Tyler's overhcanneled ability, amplifying his future sight a thousand fold. He was left for dead on the roof of Pinehearst as the building was destroyed by planted demolition charges. His body was never recovered.

Edward's ability has been explained to others as the power to project the outcome of events as they are happening, though he has stated the limitations of such a power relate to how much information he has about his surroundings. Things he cannot perceive or does not have knowledge of cannot be predicted unless he is able to find them by chain of predictive events, which requires further consideration, research and planning, and Edward is a planner.
