Skills

Mathematics
Romero has an instinctive knowledge of math, as well as advanced coursework in the field. He has studied as much as just about any high school student could hope to, and while that was eight years ago, it has constantly remained in his head — the only thing that has never failed him. Math, to Romero, is poetry and, more to the point, it makes sense. People, religion, life can fail you, but numbers never will. Whether it's calculus, number theory or theoretical physics, Romero can solve the problems handed to him.

Brawling
Romero has never been focused on fighting. It's never been something he's enjoyed much. But he's spent most of the last eight years hitchhiking and walking and stowing away around the world, and such a lifestyle does not allow a person to ignore the dangers of being alone on the road. Romero had to learn quickly to defend himself. He is not a skilled brawler, but he can hold his own in a fight against your average drifter, and in general that's enough to allow him to keep his health and money safe.

Migrant Labor
Romero has worked all over the world in a great variety of capacities as a day laborer. It's generally hard work for little money, but it has the advantage that it tires him out enough that he can usually sleep at night without seeing Gia's tortured eyes on the back of his own eyelids. He knows where to go to find those who seek laborers, and knows how to get along with the other workers and even get asked back if there's more work to be done. It's a living. Sort of.

Memorable Quotes

  • "Math isn't boring if you know enough about it. It's a universal language, the same everywhere you go — Stockholm, Barbados — pure, but with just as few absolutes as anything true."
  • 'The one crucial proof of why you couldn't divide by zero was that, otherwise, nothing else made sense. It all hinged on one simple thing.' — Teo's Background

Nickelback, "Savin' Me"

Prison gates won't open up for me
On these hands and knees I'm crawlin',
Oh, I reach for you.
Well I'm terrified of these four walls,
These iron bars can't hold my soul in.
All I need is you.
Come, please I'm callin',
And oh I scream for you.
Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'

Show me what it's like
To be the last one standing
And teach me wrong from right
And I'll show you what I can be.
Say it for me.
Say it to me,
And I'll leave this life behind me.
Say it if it's worth saving me.

Heaven's gates won't open up for me
With these broken wings I'm fallin'
And all I see is you
These city walls ain't got no love for me.
I'm on the ledge of the eighteenth story
And oh I scream for you,
Come, please, I'm callin'
And all I need from you.
Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'.

Hurry I'm fallin'.

All I need is you.
Come please I'm callin'.
And oh, I scream for you,
Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin', I'm fallin'.

Hurry, I'm fallin'.

Sting, "Fields of Gold"

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley.
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold.

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold.

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley?
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold.

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold.
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left,
We'll walk in the fields of gold.

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley.
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold.
