New York Public Library

Once upon a time, the New York Public Library was one of the most important libraries in America. The system, of which this branch was the center, was among the foremost lending libraries /and/ research libraries in the world.

The bomb changed that, as it changed so much else.

By virtue of distance, the library building was not demolished entirely, like so many others north of it; however, the walls on its northern side have been badly damaged, and their stability is suspect. The interior is a shambles, tattered books strewn about the chambers and halls, many shelves pulled over. Some have even been pulled apart; piles of char in some corners suggest some of their pieces, as well as some of the books, have been used to fuel fires for people who sought shelter here in the past.

In the two years since the bomb, the library — despite being one of the icons of New York City — has been left to decay. The wind whistles through shattered windows, broken by either the blast-front or subsequent vandals, carrying dust and debris in with it. Rats, cats, and stray dogs often seek shelter within its walls, especially on cold nights. Between the fear of radiation and the lack of funds, recovery of the library is on indefinite hiatus; this place, too, has been forgotten.

It is a quiet morning at the headquarters of PHOENIX. Sunlight shines through the windows and into a room that is full of table and chairs. Sitting in one of these chairs is Eve Mas, who is chuckling softly as she looks at a bunch of photos that are sprawled out around the table. Her dark hair is in a messy bun and she looks refreshed in a sense, no bags under her eyes are anything. The seer wears a pair of black jeans and a black top along with black boots. Her laughter rings out into the hall as she studies the photos.

A very grumbly Helena makes her way into the main hall. She's in boxer shorts and a man's shirt; hair disheveled she looks as if she's only just woken up. "Some people are trying to sleep," she grumbles, and cracks her morning weary eyes open a bit further to peer. "Oh." she says, and starts to shuffle around to go back to bed, or maybe get coffee.

"Oh! I didn't mean to wake you Helena" Eve says softly and it appears that she was going to let the weather witch go until, "Hold on a sec Hel. If you aren't to busy, would you like to come and look at these. You might remember some of them" Eve says and if Helena does walk over and view the pictures she would see a host of PARIAH folks in numerous pictures.

From Claire and Cameron beaming in one, to Daniel and Helena together sitting on the rooftop garden of the Condemned Tentament. There are a few big group shots of Cameron, Helena, Claire, Alex, Teo, Eve and West. Another is of Claire and Helena pouring water onto Eve, Eve does not look happy in that picture. The last one Eve is currently holding is one of Helena and Eve standing side by side, both with genuine smiles of happiness on their faces. "Seems like these were taken ages ago" Eve comments and then puts the photo she is holding down onto the table. "I'm sorry for what has been happening with everyone. Especially the split" Eve does indeed look slightly upset and sad. "I didn't want to come back officially until I had my shit together, I wouldn't be any help if I was a emotional drama queen around you guys, so I took the time to get myself back to the 'somewhat' normal" Eve shakes her head and smiles softly, not at Helena but out towards the hall.

Helena draws closer, but the only thing the pictures do is shut down her expression. She takes a single step back, as if those pictures might burn her fingers if she touched them. "Are you back?" Helena asks neutrally. "Because while I respect the fact that you're wise enough to know when you need a walkabout, we're not in a position right now to afford that kind of leisure any more."

"I am back, yes and willing to do anything to help. I have missed you all" Eve says simply and begins to put the photos into a pile. "That is understandable. How are you feeling Hel? This all must be a strain" Eve says and then she stretches her arm, she must have been sitting in that chair for awhile. "We also have a /persistent/ man that wants to join us. He is quite annoying, cornered me in the library"

Helena blinks. "You mean some other library, right? He didn't get in here, surely." Then, "Did you get a name? Any information? What did he look like?"

"Abby was there with me, I was so ready to get rid of him because he was a little too forceful. He didn't get in here, it was the other library. The one that is opened" Eve sighs as she thinks back to the day she first saw Brian. "He was the man that called the police but then broke the phone when" Eve breathes, "When Cameron was murdered" after that is said, "He seems trustworthy because he hasn't turned us in and he did know where we were staying with Ferrymen. But it is your call, also he seems to be able to duplicate himself. Like exact copies. That could prove very useful" Then a dark look enters Eve's eyes. "Also, I ran into Cameron's murderer again. He was at the Masquerade Ball. Made a man's hand and I think the man was Daniel Linderman fall off. He got away though" Eve looks down and her hands are now in fist as she shakes slightly.

That's a lot of information to absorb. Helena tackles it one issue at a time, running a hand through her hair. God, she really does need coffee. "We need more information on duplication guy. He certainly could be useful, but he doesn't sound very stable. Consider yourself assigned to him. Find out a name, as much as you can, and we'll have Sergei do a background check." There, that's one. "I've seen him too. Before he killed Cameron." Absently, "I'm not altogether sure what we can do about a man who kills with a touch. I think I might have a sitdown with Sergei about it."

"I'll get back to you shortly with all the information I can gather" Eve nods her head and then when Helena mentions seeing Cameron's murderer before, "Yeah I was there when you told Cam and then I told him of my dream and he didn't, just didn't listen. He was good for that some days" Eve smiles faintly and her eyes shine with unshed tears, but she will not cry in front of anyone else anymore. Not again. "I think talking to Sergei would be best, he is possibly the only person that could do anything to stop the man and I will do my best to see if I have any dreams that center around the 'Reaper'" Eve ruffles her already messy hair and then looks at Helena again, "How is Peter doing? I haven't seen him in awhile"

Helena looks a little pinched at the mention of Peter. "He's fine." she says, wanting to keep him as a non-issue. "I just want you to keep up with dreaming in general. Anything can be useful. I've been meaning to ask you if sketches would be easier for you to work in as opposed to full paintings? Because if so, I'll see that you get some pads. Whatever you need."

Eve looks up thoughtfully and then nods her head, "Sketches work fine, and I would appreciate that but I have bought some more arts supplies so no worries on that front. The singing job at the Orchid Lounge has been paying pretty well" Eve puts all the photos in a manila folder that was laying on the table and stands. "Anything else you will need? Have you heard anything of Claire" Eve says and then puts the manila folder in her back pocket.

Man, Eve's pushing all the buttons, and Helena has to remind herself that it's not the woman's fault. "Claire went with West and the others with PARIAH." she says. "Peter may try to convince her to come back to us, though. We'll have to see. He's still with the Company. Did you need anything else? Because I think I'm going to go get coffee."

Eve shakes her head and then begins to walk out of the room, "Nope, I'll be out working on finding out more about the duplicate man" The woman takes her hair out of the messy bun and then nods her head at Helena, "It was nice talking to you Hel and I'm really glad to be back."
