Ruins of Midtown

Standing in the ruins of Midtown, it's hard to believe New York is still a living city.

There's life enough around the fringes — the stubborn, who refused to rebuild somewhere else; the hopeful, who believe the radiation is gone, or that they somehow won't be affected. Businesses, apartment complexes, taxis and bicycles and subways going to and fro — life goes on. Perhaps more quietly than in other parts of the city, shadowed by the reminder that even a city can die, but it does go on.

Then there is the waste. The empty core for which the living city is only a distant memory. Though a few major thoroughfares wind through the ruins, arteries linking the surviving halves, and the forms of some truly desperate souls can occasionally be glimpsed skulking in the shadows, the loudest noise here is of the wind whistling through the mangled remnants of buildings. Twisted cords of rebar reach out from shattered concrete; piles of masonry and warped metal huddle on the ground, broken and forlorn. Short stretches of road peek out from under rubble and dust only to disappear again shortly afterwards, dotted with the mangled and contorted forms of rusting cars, their windows long since shattered into glittering dust.

There are no bodies — not even pieces, not anymore. Just the bits and pieces of destroyed lives: ragged streamers fluttering from the handlebar which juts out of a pile of debris; a flowerbox turned on its side, coated by brick dust, dry sticks still clinging to the packed dirt inside; a lawn chair, its aluminum frame twisted but still recognizable, leaning against a flight of stairs climbing to nowhere.

At the center of this broken wasteland lies nothing at all. A hollow scooped out of the earth, just over half a mile across, coated in a thick layer of dust and ash. Nothing lives here. Not a bird; not a plant. Nothing stands here. Not one concrete block atop another. There is only a scar in the earth, cauterized by atomic fire. This is Death's ground.

It's the morning and the ruins are as silent as ever. No birds.. no people running around. Just the sound of movement somewhere in the ruins. A scuffle it sounds like. If someone were to look around they would find the source of the noise is Eve, it seems she is practicing her fighting style.

Dressed in a pair of black loose cotton pants and a tank top, the woman is sweating lighting as she goes through her different forms. A move allowing her to tumble and end up on her feet, the gun she had laying on the floor next to her scooped up. She takes careful aim and fires, the bullet makes a bottle not to far away explode.

"Just be careful where you aim that thing. Wouldn't want to have to help you find someplace to bury the body, though there's plenty of places around here." Niki says, speaking after the bullet is fired and the noise dies down. "Planning on going hunting, or are you aiming for someone in particular?"

Niki's hair is matted down with her sweat, as she looks like she's been out jogging. There is a familiar 'v' of sweat down the front of her athletic gray t-shirt and the black lycra shorts fit her form very comfortably. She removes the towel from around her neck and wipes her face. After Jessica's run in with Linderman, she knows that Daniel is going to send someone after her, so after a bit of a conference, Niki has regained control and has decided maybe it's time to enlist a handful of help.

"Just practicing." She says in greeting to Niki and turns her head to give the woman a soft smile. Her bandaged arms can be seen. "Out for a little run?" she asks with a tilt of her head and then she places the gun next to a few others that are laid out on a smooth rock in the clearing.

"Hunting may be done later, who knows?"

The smile is returned. "I know what you mean. Though I think I'm the one who's being hunted. Looking over my shoulder every time I go outside. More trying to get my head back on straight, as opposed to actually trying to train for something. I've got enough strength on me. What I don't have is peace of mind." Niki places the towel back around her neck. "So, planning to be hunting anyone in particular?" Despite the sweat, she's not panting in the least.

"Whose hunting you?" A question asked along with a raised eyebrow. That isn't good. To Niki's question, a shake of her head. "No.. no one in particular.. yet." She adds with a soft hiss. "Just preparing for the future." A light shrug follows.

"The future? Are you expecting something to happen? If you need me, you know where to find me." Niki offers before explaining. "Daniel Linderman is responsible for Micah's death. Micah wasn't dead. He didn't die in the explosion like I thought and for all this time, Linderman had him. I found out and by the time I got to the hospital, he had died for real. Jessica went to the Linderman building to confront him, but he wasn't there. She left our calling card before she left. I expect that Linderman is going to go into survival mode and send someone to keep us from getting to him." When talking about Micah, there's almost a sigh of resignation there, as well as a pang of grief coming through Niki's voice as she struggles to maintain her composure.

"Oh my.. I'm so sorry for your loss.." Eve shakes her head. "If you need my help with them.. just let me know." Eve sighs. "No.. just the future isn't looking any brighter."

Niki shakes her head, sweat dripping from soaked locks of hair. "No. You have no need to be sorry, Eve. I appreciate your sympathy, but right now I've never been so angry. I just want vengence. I want justice. I'm afraid I won't have it until I get my hands around Daniel Linderman's throat." Her jaw clenches tightly.

"Then that is what you must do.. hm?" Eve begins to walk back towards her guns. "Don't rush into it though. From what I understand.. Linderman is not a foolish man. He has plans.. and then plans within plans.. you'll need more than just me to help you take his group down." The singer says this as she runs a hand over her guns, humming softly.

"Maybe even let them come to you first, show Linderman. Not to fuck with you."

"Well, Jessica already paid him a visit, left him with a bit of a repair bill for his little building there." Niki notes, running her finger through her sweat dripping hair as her eyes goes towards the weapons. "I have no doubt he'll be sending someone my direction very soon. When he runs out of thugs, then I'll come get him. So, what's going on with you? What's all this about your future?"

"Ah.. ah.. ah.." Eve shakes her finger in Niki's direction. "Not my future. Everyone's future." Eve says and she sits on the rock next to the guns. Her head tilted up towards the ceiling. "Something is coming.. and it's something different than everything else we've ever encountered." Eve looks at Niki. "It.. isn't time to tell people yet. But, when the time comes. Will you be there?" A simple question.

The statement from Eve is mysterious, and compelling. Niki's mantra since her return has been 'not getting involved.' The urge to repeat that lingers in her form as she shifts her eyes first to the guns, then something behind Eve, then on Eve herself. She really has nothing left to lose now. Absolutely nothing. With a determined expression on her face, she looks Eve in the eye and responds: "Call me. I'll be there as soon as I possibly can."

The dream prophetic seems content with that answer. She closes her eyes and nods her head. Gillian will help, and now Niki as well. "Thank you, consider the same goes for me. Deal?" she asks with a look up towards Niki. The woman of superior strength.

Niki hasn't felt strong in quite a long time. Only recently has she felt a surge in confidence she clearly believes to belong to Jessica. The slight mingling of personalities inside her that occured in the future allows for there to be no secrets between her three personas. Sometimes that's a bad thing, but for the most part it has been good. For the first time in a long time, perhaps she's found what she's been seeking for quite some time. Purpose. Blue eyes meet those of the woman across from her as she nods. "Deal."

"Now all we need to do is wait.." Eve says and her light grey eyes meet Niki's blue ones. "Are you ready?" A lot of question today from Eve. "Because you must be, for what's ahead." Her hand grips the rock and she rocks back and forth slowly.

"These people know no mercy and we must not either."

"If you need no mercy, you're talking to the wrong me. But, I'm certain that she'll be willing to help." Niki says in responds. "I'm going to head back. As soon as you can tell me what's going on, I'd like to know. But if you tell me something bad is going to happen, I believe you. I just would like to know."

"Will do.. be careful." Eve says and then she turns her back to Niki. Looking out towards the sky. "See you soon." A faint smile on her lips.
