FRONTLINE is a special operations unit of the US military created in July 2009. Its membership is comprised entirely of Evolved individuals, and its purpose is to provide a final line of defense against the actions of violent Evolved. FRONTLINE is to SWAT what the National Guard is to conventional law enforcement. FRONTLINE does not enforce laws, but has the task of defusing dangerous situations by any means appropriate.
Summary
Eligibility
FRONTLINE candidates are drawn primarily from Evolved members of the armed forces. Civilian candidates may be considered only if they have background and training commiserate with the duties of FRONTLINE, and have a minimum of potential sources of conflict. Due to the minority of Evolved available for inclusion in FRONTLINE units, female candidates are permissible provided they meet all other requirements.
Basic eligibility requirements for the U.S. armed forces apply to FRONTLINE candidates:
- US citizen or legal non-citizen resident
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Of appropriate age
- Has no dependents under the age of 18
Requirement waivers may be applied for (or be applied for you) in some cases, and particularly if a draft is deemed necessary.
Duties and Role
FRONTLINE units are expected to be close-knit, highly mobile, and largely self-sufficient teams. They may be summoned to deal with Evolved situations at any hour of the day and on any day of the year, with backup often not available in a timely fashion. Squads are therefore designed such that members have separate, complementary specialties. However, all members of FRONTLINE must also have the basic skills and training that allow them to pull their weight in general operations of the unit; specialty alone is not enough. For example, while units have a 'medical officer' position, the person with this role will be as active in operations as any other; there are no bystanders. The assignment of two squads per unit provides redundancy and inherent support when necessary, also allowing the two teams to operate separately and address situations that come up simultaneously.
FRONTLINE operates solely to the assistance of local and federal law enforcement. While the teams are culled from military trained individuals, they are not a part of the United States Armed Forces, and are considered supplementary tactical assistance to organizations such as state and city police and federal agencies such as the NYPD, strictly for the handling of situations where Evolved abilities are required.
Situations that may cause a FRONTLINE team or unit to be called in include but are not limited to:
- Resolving high-risk situations, particularly hostage or standoff scenarios or involving violent Evolved individuals
- Counter-terrorism operations in the unit's area of authority
- Providing superior assault firepower, particularly in breaching building or barricade defenses
- Security against Evolved attacks for high-profile visiting dignitaries and public events
