A 35-year-old man is dead after a fire ripped through an apartment building on Manhattan's Roosevelt Island.

Police said the man was found unconscious and unresponsive outside the complex in the Summer Meadows subdivision after they responded to reports that an unoccupied residence had been set ablaze and shots fired when local residents confronted a group of individuals believed to be the arsonists. The victim, identified as Marcus North, had been shot twice in the chest and was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital.

FDNY officials said the fire was brought under control shortly after 8 p.m. Friday night and are currently investigating its cause. Ten people suffered minor injuries during the altercation, eight of have already released from St. Luke's. Two remain in stable condition.

Witnesses report that at least twelve individuals were arrested by police upon arrival. Police Commissioner Karen Lau corroborated their story for WPIX-TV but declined to say whether or not anyone would be charged in either the slaying or the fire.
