Ten years later, the violence that characterized the years from 2007 to 2010 is little more than a bad memory and a lengthy section for the history books. The terrorist groups who spent both their own and others' blood for one cause or another have been smothered by various law enforcement agencies and FRONTLINE, the US Government's special Evolved unit drawn from members of the military and various other agencies. The tragedy of the bomb is well-remembered, its dead honored with a grand memorial service each year, but the ruins of Midtown have been supplanted by parkland, a vast and verdant forest clean of all lingering radiation.
Registration still exists, but the Linderman Act has been supplanted. Under the Unity Act of August 2011, registration is voluntary but highly encouraged. Evolved who register are eligible for classes in the control and use of their abilities; eligible for scholarships to colleges which have created curricula and courses specifically for helping Evolved individuals live with their powers — and to help others live with them. There are also institutes scattered about most large urban centers which offer weekday classes to people who aren't in the college student category.
Evolved who are listed on the registry have the legal right to openly practice their ability as a part of their business — or as their business. Does your dog chronically misbehave? Search the registry for a local animal telepath. Need an ice sculpture for a reception? Look up a cryokinetic. Is the massive antique headboard too heavy for you and all your friends together to get into the moving van? Evolved abilities are as good as commonplace and everyday, and all it takes is a simple web-search — or, if you prefer hardcopy, flipping through the equivalent of an Evolved phonebook.
Not everyone who registers chooses to make their contact information public, but a good number of those who do make a living from it — by nothing more than the phonecalls and requests of people who have a situation their particular ability is tailor-made for. Others find that various groups and companies — from law enforcement to hospitals to advertising agencies to almost any other field you could name — actively look for Evolved whose abilities could benefit their work, offering them a substantial retainer in return for on-call assistance.
