Appendices

helena_icon.gif 0 — The Fool Helena Dean seems to be almost the very personification of the Fool and the Fool's journey. She is young, uncertain and ever-learning, looking for her place among the world and her place in her own life. Everything feels transient to her, and when she came looking to Hokuto for advice, it felt like part of the chapter of the Fool's Journey itself; the Fool comes to the Hermit to find enlightenment and understanding.
mortimer_icon.gif I — The Magician A man divided by twin minds, Mortimer Jack represents a surprising among of familiar things to Hokuto, who also lives in a binary life between dreamer and dream. She sees the power of will, creation and energy inside of Mortimer, sees a potential that few others have, and in helping him reconcile the differences of his divided mind's loyalties, has helped him unlock a great wealth of confidence and power within himself, and he has shown her that even the most disparate of threads can be reunited again.
angela_icon.gif II — The Priestess Angela Petrelli is a mentor figure, a guardian, and a close friend of Hokuto's. Her ability to see into the future with her dreams is something Hokuto desperately envies, and finds her a fascinating and remarkably strong-willed woman. At the same time, she sees how Angela controls and commands the respect of others around her, but realizes at her core she is a gentle, loving and vulnerable woman.
eileen_icon.gif III — The Empress Eileen Ruskin is a young woman that Hokuto Ichihara knows better than she admits. Somewhere behind the often caustic and deferential exterior, their lies a warm and loving woman who does not truly belong in the world she's found herself thrust into. Maternal, elemental, fey; she exemplifies many aspects of the Empress card, down to the refined beauty of nobility implied by the card's title. But for now, Hokuto is secure in keeping some secrets from the female sovereign.
bao-wei_icon.gif IV — The Emperor Every sovereign and ruler has the burden and weight of their responsibilities landing squarely on their shoulders, but a true leader knows how to shrug that weight of failure off and marshal themselves forward; neither forgetting the past nor being beholden to it. Bao-Wei Cong is a man that exemplifies this male-ego ideal of a ruler, and yet has managed not to be mired down in the failures that a leader must endure. Hokuto could learn much about moving on from him.
darien_icon.gif V — The Heirophant Educated, calm, composed, compassionate. All of these things Hokuto Ichihara sees as qualities of her sole employee at Ichihara Books. Darien Kinnison is a gentle, kind-hearted man who is both soft-spoken and passionate about his life and what he believes in. But there is far more than meets the eye with Darien, and Hokuto is only now beginning to see the surface of what strength lies beneath.

VI — Lovers The Lovers is a card about more than just sex and physicality, it is a card based in the more abstract ideals for forming a sense of values and personal beliefs. Two individuals, represented as the male and female aspects of the Lovers card are prominent in this to Hokuto Ichihara— her mother and father. Without both of them, she would not have matured into the woman that she is, or taken steps to try and change from the woman she has become. They will always be her moral compass, even when all other guides try to lead her astray.
cat2_icon.gif VII — The Chariot Control, pragmatism, assertion and willpower; the Chariot represents the force of will that it takes to push forward and never stop. The Chariot represents the positive aspects of the ego, and if there is something that Hokuto sees in Catherine Chesterfield, it is a powerful ego.Catherine is strong and self-assured. She knows what she wants and how to get it. Hokuto admires this perseverance and devotion, but must learn not to emulate bull-headedness which is often synonymous with the card.
abby_icon.gif VIII — Strength Abigail Beauchamp is a kind person in an unkind world. It takes a certain level of resolve to be able to remain a ray of light in dark times, and that is exactly what Hokuto sees in this young woman. There's a gentle strength to her, a kindness that seems to know no bounds, and yet also that youthful potential for change and growth.
s_hokuto_icon.gif IX — The Hermit The Hermit is a solitary figure that is contemplative of the world and his life. In a way, the masculine personality traits of the Nightmare Man, Hokuto's Shadow personality, represent this facet of herself. She was unable to come to terms with his identity and that such a murderous part of herself was truly a part of herself, but in the reconciliation of these divested halves, she has found wisdom and insight into herself, and humility.
cardinal_icon.gif X — The Wheel of Fortune In a way, Richard Cardinal is bent over the wheel like a torture device. Having devoted himself to the cause of a madman who thought himself capable of stemming the tide of destiny himself, Cardinal now is bound to that very wheel for better or worse. Hokuto sees in him a man with a conflicting destiny and someone who has the lives of many others who hang on him. Through Cardinal's fate, the fate of others are affected, which in a way makes him a spinner of that wheel himself.
meredith_icon.gif XI — Justice Meredith is a familiar face from Hokuto's days at the Company, even if it is simply from her record in the file room. But Meredith's checkered past brings with it the potential for great catharsis. To Hokuto she represents a signal to do what needs to be done. A time to come when responsibilities must be accepted, and accounts settled. She is someone who's past that will continue to haunt her if she does not recognize her mistakes and make amends for them.
kayla_icon.gif XII — The Hanged Man Kayla Reid is a woman with a remarkable gift, one that Hokuto envies the potential of, but feel saddened by the burden it represents. She sees Kayla's struggle of her emotions to be something to fix, it is in Kayla that a mirror of her own selfless nature shines through, even if the mirror itself is a dirty one. She sees the ability of sacrifice for the greater good, but also sees the sacrifice in emotional distance it has placed on Kayla. She wants nothing more than to take away her pain, or help her find a way to do it herself.
kaylee3_icon.gif XIII — Death Change; Change is the way of the Death card. One end leading to a transition and another way forward. Card 13 rarely has anything to do with physical death, and it is this analogy to the idea of transition that Hokuto places upon Kaylee. Death is not something that happens once to our bodies. It happens continually, at many levels and not just in the physical. Each moment we die to the present so the future can unfold. This is how Hokuto sees Kaylee, a death to transition to the future.
daphne_icon.gif XIV — Temperance The fourteenth card in the Tarot means balance, moderation and patience, none of these things Daphne Milbrook has, and that is exactly why Hokuto has attributed this card to her. It is not out of some application of Daphne's personality, but where she feels Daphne must go in order to progress as a person. Temperance can represent a need for moderation, especially in combination with cards that have extremes, such as the Star. She needs balance, moderation and all things leveled in her life, and that is what Hokuto hopes to be able to deliver to her in an unconventional way.
deckard3_icon.gif XV — The Devil A bitter cynic is Flint Deckard, represented by the fifteenth card of the tarot, "the Devil." He is a symbol for what is bad and undesirable and yet struggles to overcome those very things. Flint Deckard shows that you must take the bad with the good, and find the good in the bad. He is a sympathetic but at the same time frustrating figure who serves as a reminder that nothing is cut and dry, or clearly black and white.
logan2_icon.gif XVI — The Tower John Logan is a man who has brought nothing but pain and torment to people Hokuto knows, and so many she doesn't. But like all troubled individuals, they come from a troubled past. In understanding where John came from, and the trauma of his youth, she has attempted to be the slap in the face that he needs in order to change, in order to find that even in the ruin of everything he's built up for himself in this life — there's still a chance for change.
corbin_icon.gif XVII — The Star Corbin Ayers represents so many things to Hokuto, it's confusing at times. But ever since the loss of both of her parents, the one defining aspect of life that Corbin has represented is the one thing in short demand these days, hope. While at the Company, they were partners, and perhaps it is the lingering inappropriateness of an inter-office relationship that kept Hokuto and Corbin from truly connecting. Perhaps it is the dreamwalkers flighty nature, or Corbin's devotion to his job. They are the best of friends, close as family, but never really as close as Hokuto secretly wants. And likely, never will be.
tzigane_icon.gif XVIII — The Moon The moon is about illusions, deceptions, and a world of creativity. In so many ways the uniquely quirky youth that Hokuto has taken in fits this criteria. Tzigane is a creature of lies and deceptions by merit of her upbringing, and it's that very facade Hokuto struggles to get her to challenge, but she is asking the proverbial tiger to change its stripes.
aaron_icon.gif XIX — The Sun Brilliant. Radiant. Sparkling. So many words reflect the power and glory of light. When we turn on the light in a room, we illuminate it so that all the dark corners are visible. When we turn on the light in our minds, we are enlightened. We see clearly and understand the truth. Both within and without, the energy of light expands our limits and makes us shine. In the tarot the Sun also symbolizes vitality and splendor. To Hokuto Ichihara, the Sun is represented by Aaron Michaels, a young man with an infinite capacity for kindness and strength who has been saddled with the burden of his ability. Since conquering his shadow, he has gained the confidence and determination she believes he can make great change with. The Sun is definitely not a meek and retiring card, and now— neither is Aaron.
gabriel_icon.gif XX — Judgement Judgment comes in two forms with this card of the arcana. The hurtful kind which demands, "What you did is wrong, and you are bad and worthless for having done it." This type of judgment separates and leaves no room for redemption. Yet it is possible to judge without condemning; To assess the matter, weigh all sides and try to discern the truth. To recognize the need to choose and hope for the courage to do so wisely - but without blame. Gabriel Gray represents Judgement both in his ability to pass it on others, and the judgement that will ultimately be laid on him.
s_hokuto2_icon.gif XXI — The World Completion, reconciliation, wholeness. Until she was able to come to terms with the deaths of her parents and reconcile that the Nightmare Man was indeed a part of herself, Hokuto was not a whole person. Now, with the Persona, Shadow and Self united together, she is making strides to understanding herself better… and making a start on a new beginning to her life.

Theme Song

Seems that I have been held, in some dreaming state
A tourist in the waking world, never quite awake
No kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber
Until I realised that it was you who held me under

Felt it in my fist, in my feet, in the hollows of my eyelids
Shaking through my skull, through my spine and down through my ribs

No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone
No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world

And I could hear the thunder and see the lightning crack
All around the world was waking, I never could go back
'Cause all the walls of dreaming, they were torn right open
And finally it seemed that the spell was broken

And all my bones began to shake, my eyes flew open
And all my bones began to shake, my eyes flew open

No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone
No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world

Snow White's stitching up the circuitboards
Someone's slipping through the hidden door
Snow White's stitching up the circuitboard

No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone
No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love, so in love
No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world

Snow White's stitching up the circuitboards
Someone's slipping through the hidden door
Snow White's stitching up the circuitboard
Someone's slipping through the hidden door
