Two U.S. soldiers were found dead after their vehicle was ambushed by domestic terrorists 30 miles north of New York City, a military official said yesterday. The remains of the soldiers — Private First Class Christian Cardoso, 28, of Atlanta and Private First Class Cody Tober, 24, of San Francisco — were recovered on the side of the road, where they had been on their way to a vehicle checkpoint and came under attack Thursday, Colonel Leon Heller said.
Heller said that it was clear the soldiers had died of wounds suffered in the ambush, but that the cause of death could not be immediately determined. A military spokeswoman initially refused to describe the condition of the soldiers' bodies, but suggested that they were so mutilated that they could not be positively identified. During a press conference held this morning at Miller Airfield, Heller revealed that Cardoso and Tober had been decapitated at the site of the ambush and their heads found on Staten Island sometime between today and initial statements made by officials late yesterday evening, allowing for positive identification.
"Those responsible will be brought to justice," said Heller at the conference's closing. "If that means I have to oversee their capture myself, then I will."
