Background

Born in Belgium in 1979 to a Dutch mother and a German father, Franziska Poisson would find herself the middle of seven children. A large family meant that the girl had to compete for attention. Part of this was accomplished by acting out, throwing furious fits in order to make her parents focus on her, however negative that attention may have been. As she grew older, temper tantrums turned to intentionally failing classes in school. This ultimately only landed her in therapy, which she immediately resented. Quickly turning about and applying herself to her studies to earn top grades allowed her a swift exit from visits to a counsellor that she felt unnecessary. The added bonus to this, she found, was her A work finding its way onto the fridge - proof of her parents' pride. At least until good performance became commonplace and expected. Rather than try the same trick twice, Franziska instead devoted herself to playing the piano when she reached junior high, finding that the necessary evil of recitals became something her parents at least had to fuss about.

Recitals couldn't draw as much focus as Franziska wanted over time. Her elder siblings had either begun or were in the process of choosing where they would attend university, and that began to take importance over "just another performance." Quickly realising she was going to have to explore a new avenue in order to gain attention, the sophomore surprised everyone when she stood up at dinner one night to announce she was going to go to medical school. Much like the piano, Franziska truthfully felt little love for the idea of what she was about to do, but it seemed to make her parents so incredibly proud, that she quickly decided she had made the right decision. It gave her a bit of a glow to be introduced as the future doctor in the family, and then to watch her parents - and even her siblings - beam as they would tell others that she was studying to be a doctor.

Franziska had the necessary intelligence to excel at her studies and she graduated pre-medical with little difficulty, and subsequently discovered that applying herself more allowed her to make it through medical school without too much burn out. Only once she reached her internship and subsequent residency did she realise that her lack of conviction for her chosen profession translated to a lack of confidence. The prospect of losing patients positively terrified her once she faced more than just hypothetical situations. Every young doctor loses a patient, either through inexperience or inevitability. Franziska's first was the latter, but it affected her no less profoundly. Her patient's cancer was diagnosed too late for her to combat and cure. This event ultimately spurred her to focus on palliative care in her residency. For the young physician, the idea of caring for patients who were already deemed incurable was preferable to failing to cure a patient under her care. Alleviating the pain and improving the quality of life in her terminal patients was oddly uplifting to her and she was well-suited for a branch of medicine most people found themselves unable to cope with.

On November 8, 2006, Franziska was roused from a nap while on-call by another doctor in order to be dragged to the break room television. Someone had blown New York City to pieces. All around the world, people were watching this same image, and it hit the young woman square in the gut. For a quarter of a century, she'd allowed herself to stand in the shadow of her siblings and allowed it to bother her. Rather than live her life to her own fulfilment, she was too busy simply trying to outshine her brothers and sisters. She made a decision to stand in her own light and bask in it on its own merits. In April, Doctor Poisson moved to New York City on a work visa to practice medicine there and to hopefully find herself along the way. There were plenty of people who required hospice care in the city - those who had sustained injuries in the initial blast and those who would come to suffer long-term effects of the fallout. While she still believed she excelled at her craft, Franziska could not deny that her language barrier - English not even being her second language - was detrimental to her ability to properly associate with her patients. She made the decision to begin working with different sorts of patients… Those who could not talk back. Putting her knowledge of forensic pathology to good use, Franziska joined the rank of county medical examiners.

• Franziska has six siblings. (Hint: This is an RP hook.)
• Though her speech is heavily accented and she often times drops words of French into her conversations, Franziska is not French. Mademoiselle Poisson is quick to correct anyone who makes this egregious mistake and remind the offender of her heritage - that she in fact hails from Belgium.
• Franziska's written skills in English may actually be better than her ability to properly speak the language, and she has a habit of butchering the pronunciations of words - especially the American variants.
• A bi-product of her European upbringing, Franziska speaks fluent Flemish and French, while speaking German and Dutch conversationally. She also has a fair grasp on Latin due to her higher education in medicine.
• In an attempt to earn the attention of her parents, Franziska took up piano and plays it quite well. While adept and even skilled at it, she would never consider it a passion. To her, it's only a skill she can call upon in order to impress others and draw eyes on her. Admittedly, while she doesn't play simply for pleasure, she does prefer jazz when she indulges.
• Colour Coordinated Fashionista: Not really a skill, but rather a lack thereof. When Franziska isn't dressed professionally, she tends to display a lack of understanding about complimentary colours. Her style is wholly her own and tends to be… Let's just say when coupled with her interesting hairstyles, Franziska Poisson is definitely unique.
