Background

On the twenty-eighth of April, 1981, a woman who escaped Iran at the time of the Ayatollah's rise and a man from El Salvador had a daughter. They named her Maria Christina Delgado. They chose a small city in the northwestern part of Virginia to settle in, and worked hard to keep all three of them fed. It wasn't easy, they often went without more than the basic neccessities, as good paying work wasn't always available. They always had hope their nina could break free, though, and were strict about her being well-educated. That was the best path out of poverty for her.

She grew to be moderately athletic and confident, not one to let the racial slurs and derision for her family's lack of money drag her down. In high school she followed the AP programs, focused on sciences, and won a scholarship to UVA. The US Navy had agreed to finance her education in return for a service commitment after graduation. There were boys and social experiences, such as was possible for one of her background, but she made up her mind to not let herself become a statistic; battered woman, pregnant teen, drug user… Maria had none of that. Ambition and drive kept her focused on the future.

On a hiking trip to the Shenandoah National Forest over the summer of her high school graduation in 1998, Maria ran into trouble. She became separated from the group she'd gone with, and found herself at the edge of a steep cliff. While trying to pick her way down, the ground gave way under her feet and she was swept off the edge. She expected to be smashed against the rocks below and maybe never be found, but life got exceedingly weird. Somehow she just hung in mid-air, and discovered with concentration she could move around that way.

Her time at college was spent having the standard college experiences, but not to excess. She was serious about her studies, and spent some of her time slipping away into the mountain forests where she honed the ability to fly. Four years later, in 2002, she graduated with a bachelor of sciences degree in biotechnology and was commissioned an Ensign by the Navy. Her posting was to Norfolk where she served as a liasion with firms contracted to provide support in her degree field. She made contacts with those companies in the process, which would pay off for her in time.

The bomb saddened her, she felt the tragedy as much as most people around the country did, without the added pain of having lost anyone close to her in the blast. When the Linderman Act was passed, she promptly registered. It scared her to a degree, the way Evolved were called freaks, but she'd always been a minority and risen above disadvantages; there was no reason to believe she still couldn't. It seemed little different than her ethnic background: her olive tinged skin couldn't be hidden, nor would she try to do so. At the end of her commitment, in 2006, Lieutenant (junior grade) Delgado left the Navy and returned to UVA for postgraduate study. After earning a Master's degree in the spring of 2008 she accepted a job working for a biotech firm based in New York City.

Psych Profile

Dark hair, dark eyes, skin tinged a shade of olive, and a usual demeanor of detached professionalism mark the Persian/Latina who goes by the name Maria Christina Delgado. She's generally alert and observant, studying the world with a touch of cynicism. Her attire is often that of a woman who works in an office, but outside of work she tends to wear a wider range of colors. Skirts are rare for the woman of five feet and three inches (1.6 meters).

She's tough-minded, determined, and optimistic. Maria, having had to work for everything and overcome disadvantages, isn't one to easily give up on a goal. She's confident, outgoing, and easy to converse with, but can have a temper if she feels the need to put her foot down.

Evolved Ability

Maria Delgado is well practiced at her power. She can hover in mid-air on demand; move forward, backward, up, and down at a walking pace; stop and start without landing; resist the effects of g-forces and thin atmosphere at higher altitudes; carry objects and people aloft up to a maximum of her own body weight (126 pounds/57.153 kg). She can reach a speed of Mach 2.

Flying has fuel consumption requirements, as follows: Normal walking speeds: No increase above the general requirements of daily life.

Flight at ground running speed: 4 calories per minute (240 per hour).

Speeds up to Mach 1: 16 calories per minute (960 calories per hour).

Speeds between Mach 1 and Mach 2: 32 calories per minute (1920 calories per hour). If she doesn't consume that amount before or during an extended high speed flight she will tire within an hour and be unable to keep herself aloft. Having learned this early on, she keeps power bars in her pockets whenever possible, to have that burst of energy available when needed. Speeds below Mach 1 but faster than a normal walking pace burn fuel at 8 calories per minute.

Carrying persons or items aloft with her increases the fuel requirement. One quarter of her body weight raises the standard need by one quarter.

Her resistance to environmental forces involved with high speed flight has costs as well. Eight hours of supersonic flight uses up one day's worth of protein and vitamins, and will also require a full eight hours of sleep.
