When the war began, Remi made a vow to herself that she would fight for her friends and family. This wasn't her country, certainly — she probably could have just as easily skipped the border into Canada and made her way back home to France from there, content to sit in her fields of lavender while America tore itself apart. But she had loved ones here, and she couldn't just sit idly by and watch their lives be destroyed. Even if she was just one little weak, silly telepath with zero real-world experience, Remi would do everything that she could to help in this crazy, messed up war. In any case, she is French. And the French resist.
Vive La Résistance.
2011 ended with Remi joining her fellow Endgame associates to help out the besieged Pollepel Island. As the war started up, Remi pitched in her help as often as she possibly could. When she wasn't out helping in the fight, she was in Minnesota, manning the fort as well as working hard to learn how to better harness and expand her ability, with the help of others involved with their operations; Jaiden also helped her learn a few combat skills, at least enough to keep her out of a fight. During this time, she continued an ongoing polyamorous relationship with both Jaiden and Ygraine.
For a year, she fought, getting as into the thick of things as she could. She developed a particularly useful aspect of her ability that helped her and others remain undetected (by one person at a time, but Remi learned to work with this). This brought her much more firmly into the fight, as it gave her and her allies a distinct advantage.
However, that all changed in early 2013. In early March, Remi discovered that she was pregnant with the child of, of all people she could possibly have a child with, Graeme Cormac. A rather awkward encounter that made it clear to both that they were best suited to snuggle buddies led to a lifelong commitment. Remi withdrew her physical aid in the war, opting instead to stay in Kabetogama and act as an extra security measure. She made use of this extra down time to dive head first into working on her ability, practicing on any ally who would allow (within reason).
On October 16, 2013, Victoria Jessamyn Cormac-Davignon was born, healthy as can be. Remi spent the remainder of the civil war raising her daughter in Kabetogama, while still working on her ability whenever the chance would present itself. After she had recovered from childbirth, she also began physical training as well, resuming her dancing along with an occasional combat training session with Jaiden.
When the war Ended, Remi gleefully came out from hiding in Kabetogama; initially, she returned home to France with Tori, reconnecting with her father after a long absence of communication. He immediately fell in love with his granddaughter, and by proxy, he began to grow closer to his own daughter once more. She spent the next year traveling between France and America, acting as a bit of a liaison between her father's company and the United States. Somewhere along the way, she picked up an extra job with Raytech Industries as PR Director — as well as Richard Ray's in-house telepath.
On January 18, 2015, a year after the end of the Civil War, Jaiden and Remi were officially married, deciding that their bond should never be broken so long as they were able to keep it. Life was good, everyone was happy, and the world was finally starting to look up.
Taking advantage of the Western Dead Zone and its low real estate prices, Remi bought herself a small canyon just outside of Moab, Utah, and a large six bedroom compound that came with it (which is only reachable via a maze of canyons and rough gravel roads). This was outfitted for self-sufficient off-grid living, with a greenhouse and solar panels, and a groundskeeper was hired to maintain (and protect) the property when nobody is around.
A month later, Remi's father passed away, taking her quite by surprise; he had not informed her (and she always had trouble reading his mind), but his lungs had been failing him for years. This left Remi in a peculiar position. According to her father's will, she was indeed the heiress to the vast Davignon fortune, and the CEO of the Davignon Corporation; however, her father had left a large number of stipulations in these sudden assets that were now in his daughter's name — one such being a college education and a business degree to go with it.
In May of 2017, Remi and Jaiden welcomed another child, Lisette Ophelie Mortlock-Davignon. In the interest of her family, Remi has purchased a nicely redone home in Bay Ridge, and has started taking classes part-time (twice a week) at Brooklyn College when she's not busy with being a mom, being a PR Director for Raytech, or dealing with any of the myriads of other pies she has her fingers in.
Remi is not the haughty, impetuous young heiress that she used to be. She is still a hard worker who will stop at nothing to achieve whatever she may have set her mind to, and she is still not above using her charms and feminine wiles to get what she wants. However, she has softened over time in some ways, while in others still, she has grown harder.
She still enjoys her solace, but these days, she is much more concerned with making a future for her children in a better world. She has grown a bit more generous with the family funds (to a degree; she's not about to give up her family fortune anytime soon). She has also become much more willing to use her ability.
In general, Remi is a protective mother who not only loves her two daughters but also all of the 'children' who have come under her wing since the start of the civil war.
Telepathy:
Remi is a fairly potent telepath, able to read the thoughts and memories of those around her. In its rawest, most basic form, she can simply 'hear' the surface thoughts of those within her range. There are many other facets to this ability, however, that Remi has explored over the years.
The Basics:
The general gist is, without trying, Remi can hear the surface thoughts of every person within the general range of her ability. This ability is always on; she has to consciously 'turn it down' (even when concentrating, she can't fully turn her ability off — it simply comes through as a 'whisper'), though she is often more comfortable when she doesn't have to do so. 'Loud' and/or emotionally charged thoughts can still make it through, as well, even if she is actively focusing on keeping the volume down.
Let's Talk:
Remi can, in turn, project her own thoughts into the heads of others. By default, she speaks into the minds of all present within her range; with enough focus, she can narrow it down to a select few people, or a single person. This aspect of her ability can be used in a variety of different ways.
Most frequently, Remi uses her own to simply converse with others within her range or to convey information. This can allow her to have full private conversations with someone from across a loud, crowded room, or to create a line of communication between herself and others as a mental comm unit of sorts.
With a bit more finesse and concentration, Remi can mask her projections to 'sound' like the thoughts of her target; this can be used to sew doubt within a person's mind, or with the application of a bit of intent behind it, it can act as a very weak mental 'nudge' in a direction Remi may want her target to head. Much like an inner monologue, a target can easily argue themselves out of such thoughts if it is not within their nature, usually dismissing it as a stray thought that is not worth any further consideration. This ability is much more useful for planting the seeds of a thought than actual commands, which takes a good amount of time and a decent understanding of her target in order to properly sow these seeds.
(For example, Tommy is aggravated by his weight. He wants to do something about it but hasn't really gotten up enough motivation to do anything about it. Remi can plant the seed that he should get a gym membership that he pays for, as it might encourage him to exercise more often. Tommy toys with this idea a bit, and ultimately acts on it, and finds that 'his' hunch was right.)
With still more concentration and force behind it, Remi can issue mental commands to up to ten targets, which they will be driven to comply with; other telepaths are immune, and mentally strong individuals can resist these commands, and any individual can resist if the command goes against their nature. Despite practice, this aspect of her ability is still one of the most difficult of her abilities for Remi to use and is limited to extremely simple commands that can be issued in a single word: stop, sit, quiet, follow, etc. For anything more complicated, Remi requires a bit of one-on-one time within five feet of a target, with her full concentration put behind any telepathic commands. This last aspect of her ability can only be used once — any attempts to affect additional targets will result in overexertion and the consequences thereof.
One last application is the ability to unleash a 'loud' telepathic screech into the heads of those within her range, often temporarily stunning those affected for a decent clip of time. Unfortunately, this takes a bit more focus, and is indiscriminate — it stuns everyone within range, friend and foe alike.
Of One Mind:
Through touch only, Remi can quite literally link minds with a person, prompting the other person to temporarily be of one mind with her. More often than not, Remi uses a dulled down version of this to create a secure link that enables her and her target to converse in complete privacy. At its base level, this can be a disorienting and outright uncomfortable experience for the person she is performing this with if she does not take steps to prevent such an experience; Remi has had years of practice and experience living with the constant 'noise' in her head, others have not.
This ability is a two-way street; the deeper she links herself to a person, the more open to them she becomes — anything she can do within their minds, they can do within hers. While most people are (thankfully) unaware of this when linked to her, a person with a trained or strong enough mind can easily look deeper into Remi's mind even as she looks into theirs. Remi can control how deep this link runs, from simply sharing surface thoughts, all the way to fully knocking down any barrier between her and the recipient of such a mind link.
For example, Remi could link minds with Seth, and simply share surface thoughts with him; in turn, she can go deeper, able to look into Seth's memories, even going so far as looking at his childhood, but Seth can in turn dive just as deep into her mind and see the time she scraped her knee and cried like a baby. Remi can dig into the dark corners of Seth's mind and find his secrets, but Seth can find her dark corners and dig right back. It can be quite risky for Remi to do this, as a result.
In turn, she can use this against a person, too. If she is in a place with enough minds, she could easily give a target a sudden and brief 'blast' of a fully opened link with the volume on at full blast. This is quite uncomfortable for Remi to perform and often leaves her reeling for a moment or two, but it will usually stun the recipient for long enough to give Remi the upper hand — or allow her to escape, which is often her preference.
Taking the Plunge:
Through touch only, Remi is now able to dive beneath those initial surface thoughts. This initially manifested in 2011 as 'seeing' memories just below the surface through touch; through exploration, Remi has found that she can, in essence, dive deeper into a person's mind and see their stored knowledge and memories.
This takes a good deal of concentration, along with continuous and unbroken skin-to-skin contact. While using this ability, Remi is mostly unaware of her surroundings; a loud noise or sudden touch can rouse her, but she won't notice someone sneaking up on her.
One use for this ability is fishing information out of someone's mind. This is usually best accomplished when someone else is speaking to the target and saying things that are likely to jog one's memory to the desired place, though with enough time, Remi can go searching for a particular bit of memory or info. This effort can be resisted, at which point it becomes a battle of wills — though Remi is often better equipped to handle such a battle.
Given enough time, Remi can also browse through memories and alter them. This particular aspect of her ability can be much more tiring (especially if she meets resistance), and on a moral level, Remi is not fond of messing with people's memories. With this aspect of her abilities, she essentially can alter memories in a variety of different ways. She can change small details, or she can go as drastic as blocking an entire memory from being accessed — though she can not erase memories. This requires a great deal of concentration and effort along with uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact, and if she has an unwilling target, said target will likely need to be sedated and/or tied up in order for her to do her work. This too can be resisted, at which point it again becomes a battle of the wills.
She can, with even greater effort, create new memories within a target's mind. This is by far the most difficult aspect of her memory alteration, and can often take at least a week or more of multiple 'sessions' to complete, with long breaks in between. She must first create a believable and realistic memory; then, she must ensure that previous memories are accounted for within the false memory; finally, she must ensure that memories that come after her memory might reflect the new memory. Failure to pay attention to details can cause her target to reject the memory outright, identifying it as fake or otherwise not right or trustworthy. The time and effort that it takes to do this are extremely prohibitive, and often greatly outweighs any benefits that might come along with performing it. As such, this is a drastically underused portion of Remi's ability. This aspect of her ability is also by far the easiest to resist, and an unwilling target must be anesthetized in order for her to be able to work — even a willing target who wants a shiny new memory would benefit from some form of sedation for this particular process.
Somebody Else's Problem:
Or, telepathic invisibility, as it were. Discovered during the war, this is a particularly useful ability, especially when out on the field of combat. With this, Remi can essentially make herself and up to four other people within a ten-foot radius of herself effectively 'invisible' to a single person. This doesn't actually make them invisible; cameras are not fooled by this trick. Instead, it essentially makes it so that a single target effectively doesn't notice that Remi and her charges are there. So while Seth can totally see Remi and her pals on the security cameras, James who has gone to handle it doesn't see them at all.
This works by essentially causing the minds of Remi's target to completely ignore the existence of Remi and her charges — and in fact, causes them to actively avoid looking at them at all. Remi could be right in front of James, and he will simply feel the need to look off to the side or up at the ceiling — not at the redhead standing right in front of him. If the target is looking in a corner that Remi is stuck in, all they will see is the floor and the wall and there's totally nothing there. The super aware might notice that they think they see her out of the corner of their eye, but can never quite get a good look.
This only works on one target at a time. So if Seth AND James are out on patrol, Seth will still be able to see Remi and those with her, even though James won't see a thing. This can only be withheld for short bursts of up to 15 minutes before Remi needs to take a break to catch her breath — and she can only go like that consistently for a good hour or so before she starts getting into the range of overexertion.
Range:
Another thing that Remi has been working on over the past several years has been her range. She can now 'hear' the surface thoughts of everyone within a 100-foot range without trying, simply through the natural growth of her ability. This is what her ability reverts to when she is not thinking about it.
A new thing that Remi discovered over the years was the ability to change her range. With concentration, Remi can shrink her range. Shrinking her range is a slightly less complicated way of reducing the number of voices she hears — she can shrink her range down to the size of a single room if she wants, and enjoy peace and quiet without having to fully focus on keeping things 'off'. She can also only do this in limited bursts — about ten minutes at a time, with breaks in between, for roughly half an hour, before she approaches the brink of overexertion.
She has been working toward a new goal of being able to extend her range. She can do so — but only by about 5 feet, and she can only hold this for about thirty seconds before she starts getting dizzy — any attempts to hold it for longer will quickly lead to the various stages of overexertion. Even the small extension of range that she can accomplish makes her life quite difficult, as well — she is also unable to 'turn down the volume' on her ability while doing so, and even the small amount of extra space can make the noise that much louder. As a result, it is difficult for her to practice this when there are more than about half a dozen people within her range, as it tends to get a bit too loud in her head otherwise.
Limitations:
Remi's amazing ability does not come without its fair share of disadvantages. To start with, Remi has to constantly focus to keep the thoughts of everyone within a 100 foot radius of herself at a soft whisper; the only way to turn Remi's telepathy 'off' completely would be negation, and then she has to deal with the unpleasant feeling of being truly alone in her mind after over ten years as a telepath. Loss of concentration can leave Remi open to the onslaught of however many minds there may be within her range. In a crowded place (say more than about 15 people in her area), this can lead to disastrous effect, including immediate splitting headaches, bleeding from the eyes, nose and ears, and if exposed to these onslaughts of thoughts, it can eventually end in going into a catatonic state if she is unable to regain control.
Substances can impair her ability to control her powers, as well, easily leading to the same difficulties mentioned above. For this reason, Remi tends to avoid the use of alcohol or drugs unless she is sure that there are very few people within range.
Yet another downside is that she is actually unable to block her ability continuously; she requires rest from the concentration that it takes to keep her telepathy under control. This requires her to find an uninhabited corner of the world where she can simply let go for a while, usually for anywhere from an hour to eight hours, depending on how much exertion she's put on herself. It is in this time that she is most vulnerable, and while she can easily throw up her defenses, she can easily be caught unaware and overwhelmed by a group of people suddenly coming into her range.
Overexertion of any of the above-mentioned abilities and viewing others thoughts uncontrolled (more than the limits that have been posted) can result in loss of control, as well as increased pressure in her cranium. This can result in continual headaches, bleeding from the nose, eyes, and ears, and could eventually lead to a coma that can last anywhere from days to weeks, depending on the level of usage.
