At the fall of Pollepel Island, Tasha was taken captive by Heller and his soldiers. When Lene Petrelli took on Linda Tavara's powers and attacks Tavara, Tasha swiftly acted in that window of opportunity to shoot Heller — unfortunately, he shot back and with better aim, resulting in a bullet to Tasha's head. Comatose, she was spirited away by her father to a Montreal hospital, separated from the rest of the Ferry. It was a few weeks before she regained consciousness; rehabilitation and recuperation would take several months.
Those months also allowed her mother, with her useful legal contacts, to work on getting Tasha a student visa so that Tasha would have legal status in Canada — something that made Tasha’s life much easier, but also allowed her to be a better asset to those without the same luck or family ties — such as her little family of Tasha, Colette, Tamara, Nicole, and soon enough, a baby.
Even though Tasha’s physical scars were healing, emotionally, she was neither physically ready nor emotionally equipped to join the fight, despite knowing Colette wanted to. Still, she could not say no to Colette when the other woman discussed her desire to go. Despite the worry and stress from being separated from Colette, unable to help, Tasha chose to focus her own efforts on becoming a fighter in her own way — From late 2012 to 2014, she attended the University of Toronto to complete a bachelor’s in political science with the intent of becoming a lawyer.
Although she was not Evolved, because Tasha had been so severely injured in the Pollepel Island siege, and perhaps because she’s un-Evolved, she was asked to speak at the Albany Trials. She was nervous and apprehensive about it, but when it became clear that Colette might not be present, she agreed. While her testimony wasn’t the most important or unique, the power and strength behind her words made it clear that the courtroom was where Tasha shone brightest. The trials also helped to further cement her desire to become a lawyer and an advocate for the Evolved — or any group of people being oppressed and persecuted.
From 2014 to late 2016, Tasha continued her studies in Toronto to get her Juris Doctorate, with an emphasis on civil rights — and what amounted to independent study on American law, since she was learning north of the border but intended to practice in the US eventually. She decided to return to New York in early 2017 to be closer to Colette,Tamara, and her parents. Tasha passed the NY Bar Exam in July and, with a little parental help financially, opened a tiny legal practice in Brooklyn — Tasha Renard-Lazzaro, Attorney at Law. In addition, she signed up to be a public defender as well — no doubt just what every defendant wants on their case: a petite 20-something with a law degree from Canada.
Within a few months, Tasha offered her services to the Safe Zone Cooperative, thinking she might assist on an as-needed basis; instead she was asked to be on the council. Much of her work is unpaid, most of it is thankless, but she’s found her way to make a difference in the world.
