Synopsis | Magnes runs into Minea on the street and learns a valuable lesson. |
Date | July 6, 2009 |
Brooklyn is located on the westernmost point of Long Island and shares its only land boundary with Queens. The East river borders and defines the borough's northern coast, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan beach are to the south, and the Narrows separate it from Staten Island to the southwest.
Downtown Brooklyn is one of the NYC's largest business districts. Between the Bridge and Prospect Park, brownstones, townhouses, and high-end restaurants are dominant. The culturally diverse communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint are snugged against the East River to the far north. Close by are far more criminally active neighborhoods such as Brownsville, Crown Heights, and Bushwick. Regardless of the social situation, the so-called Borough of Neighborhoods is packed to the gills in post-bomb NYC.
It's just a Monday, quitting time for many people. Minea's safe and content, secure in her mind in having gone out around this time. More people on the street, better cover. She's sweating in her black tank top, baseball cap pulled low. The stitches had started falling out and not bothering her. - 1 gunshot wound.
There's a brown bag in hand, two of them actually. One bearing food, the other bearing what she just bought from a guy in an alley and it isn't drugs. But cost nearly as much. The good quality stuff will, when you need material for forging ID's that will pass Muster. Maybe it's the heat, combined with the antsy-ness of the situation but she's not paying as much attention to the people around her. A use and dump cellphone rests at her waist. For once it's sunny so far this summer.
Not allowed to fly, why is he never allowed to fly? It's not like he'll break cover or anything, at least in his mind. Magnes finds himself walking down the street in a white short-sleeved t-shirt with black NYPD letters on the front, and he's wearing his dark blue police academy pants, with rather worn black sneakers. He's exhausted, carrying a stuffed black dufflebag as he heads for the base, but in this heat he finds himself on a collision course with a certain rogue agent. Thud, someone bumps him hard and sends him tumbling towards her.
"Watch where you're going" Minea automatically begins the traditional New York platitudes that comes with running into someone. Not that she did the running into, but now she's got an armful of someone.
Someone being Magnes
Who is summarily being shoved backwards and away from her. Fuck, no, of all the people. "Get away" A hand goes to her waist, the brown bags dropped to the ground.
"Minea?" Magnes asks as he briefly eyes the brown bag, but seems far more occupied with her sudden appearance. "What's going on? Why'd you really leave? They told me stuff, but I didn't really… can we go somewhere private?" he asks, looking around. They're in a crowd full of people, by now even he knows this provides good cover against being watched, and it's not too hard to lose a tail, as dangerous as doing do for him may be.
"I have nothing to talk to you about, and if you so much as reach for a phone…" Why the hell was he wearing an NYPD shirt? "I will use my gun Magnes" That's enough to make some people look and give them wide berth on the sidewalk. Minea's jaw is tight as she regards the young agent. Shit and hell and five ways from Sunday, she shouldn't have gone to her source. She should have found a new one.
"Even if I wasn't too exhausted to use my ability, I'm still in training, so orders to catch you don't really apply to me." Magnes figures if the orders have that big label 'all agents', he's clearly not included! At least, that's the logic he's obviously feigning at the moment, showing a bit of loyalty. "We're friends, Minea, I just wanna know why you left, and if you left, why didn't you try to take me with you? It's, well, too little too late now, but I wanna know…"
Orders to catch her. Minea takes a few steps forward, her hand snaking out fast to grab Magnes around the throat and press just a little in., lips thin and pressed together as she regards the guy in front of her and his pleading. "I'm not going to stand around and jabber off at the mouth with you Varlane. I defected. If there's orders to take me down and bring me in, that extends to everyone even the lowly clerk. Smarten up. If Adam Monroe came by would you extend the same to him just because you think you're in training. Get a brain Varlane. We're not friends, we're opposite sides of the game. You're fucking naïveté is going to get you killed some day and you will be just a grave marker in some unknown cemetery and your parents will be told a lie about how you died because they don't have the clearance to know the truth" There's more people scattering from that part of the road and someone picking up their cellphones.
Magnes strains against her grab, but doesn't fight back quite yet, trying to talk. "N-no, I wouldn't extend the same to Adam, but the reason I was told you left didn't give me a reason to think you'd suddenly become a different person either." He weakly coughs, then suddenly attempts to cause a heaviness in her body, extending from her hand and onward. It wouldn't be enough to make her fall to the ground, but he's trying to take precautions against, well, getting shot. "I just wanted to know why my mentor left me. But if you're honestly saying I should treat you like Adam…"
"WAKE UP VARLANE!" She fights the heaviness while still holding him against the side of a building and is inwardly surprised when it ends a few seconds later. His warning to her?. "Welcome to the dirty end of what you do. Welcome to the part where you have to throw away your emotions and do things you might not like, but you gotta. Welcome to being your beloved secret agents and men in black and your super hero's"
There's no gun coming out yet but she does get close. Close enough for him to smell the grapefruit shampoo she uses and her words to be whispered in her hair. "Everyone is dangerous. I'm not your mentor, I'm the enemy" Her hand tightens enough around his neck to choke him, honest to god choke him, pressure put on the sides of his neck and make him dizzy as she squeezes the blood flow to his head down to mere trickles.
Magnes suddenly sends a quick palm up in an attempt to strike her nose, speed unhindered by gravity. "B-back off Minea! I don't wanna do this!" he protests, not attempting to hit her anymore after that, hoping she'll simply leave.
Mind you,t here's arms in Magnes way. So that strike to her nose, combined with the years of training to his… sessions with the company, Nakamura, and the police mean that it bounces off. It'll leave a bruise, but it's nothing compared to the knee coming to his groin as she pulls him down towards the incoming knee, hands locked around the back of his neck.
There's a loud groan, then he suddenly reaches down to grab his crotch, eyes slammed shut. He's not playing around anymore, he wants her away. Crotch in pain, he can't quite concentrate enough to use his powers in any fine-tuned way, he just exclaims, "Let me go or you'll lose both your arms!" attempting to threaten in the midst of his choking, clearly unable to properly fight back.
"I'm not an Evo Magnes. I'm not an evo at all. If you can't defend yourself against me, can't bring me in, what are you gonna do" She barks at him. He's bent over enough to grab at his crotch which was what she wanted. Down comes an elbow, aimed for right where neck and shoulder meet even as someones calling out and warning her to stop. "You tell them not to come find me. They won't find me. I'm gonna bust them wide open. It's been seen, it'll happen"
Magnes quikly falls to his knees, not looking up at her, just staring at the ground. "I can't fight you, I don't want to hurt you." he says in a pained voice, finally looking up at her with his defeated, possibly betrayed eyes. "I didn't want to hurt you with my ability, all I wanted you to do was leave! I don't want us to fight, we don't have to fight."
"Too bad Magnes. We don't always get what we want" It's with a grimace that she does the last thing that she does with him. There's an incoming fist to his jaw. Aimed to knock him out. Company has healers, they'll fix him up. She's confidant in that. But that look in his eyes is what she wants, what she needs.
"But wh-" Magnes doesn't get to finish before Minea's fist rocks his jaw and sends him completely to the ground. Whoever's tailing him will pick him up whenever they catch up, but for now he's out cold.
And Minea's bolting as some burly guy gets it in his head to do something. The paper bag that contains not the food, but forgery supplies are grabbed and she takes off. It's time to dodge into alley's and down streets, hop a few taxi's and get the hell out of dodge.
All with a heavy heart at what she just did. But she had to.
