Abraham Levenstein was born into a Jewish family in Chicago. From his birth, he showed an interest in the sciences. His first experiment was with soda and mentos at the age of 4. His father was a very successful poker player. As a child, he didn't know why he was so successful, but he would discover it soon enough. His mother divorced his father when he was five. He didn't know why then, but he'd discover that later too.
When he was eight, his father disappeared for a few days. When he came back, he decided he should tell his son a few things. Apparently, father was special - he could manipulate probability. He didn't know how or why he could, but he could. That's why he was so good at poker. Apparently that's why his wife divorced him, too. She got tired of him disappearing off to Las Vegas and Reno to gamble.
Not a week later, several men broke into their house. Thankfully, Abraham was at a sleep over with a friend. The men brutally murdered his father, probably tired of losing all of their money to him at the poker table and looking to get it back. Get it back they did. With his father dead, he was sent to live with his mother.
Now living in a bad neighborhood, with very little income from his mother's wages as a waitress, Abraham continued his childhood. Losing his father and his friends, he turned to his studies. Shying away from making friends at school, he was often picked on. Soon, he was more acquainted with the school bully and every trash can at the school then anyone else there.
He kept his head high, though. After all, he was going to be a scientist. Eventually he got to high school, and things began to ease up. There were more students, and that meant more targets for the bullies. His humiliations were less frequent. Soon, he graduated as class valedictorian and was given a full scholarship to Jamestown.
In his freshman year at college, he discovered he had his own special ability. He learned he could control the amount of friction present between two objects. Learning how to use it and taking to his studies were his only interests. In his sophomore year, he had the unpleasant experience of forgetting an entire day.
For the next eight years he perfected the use of his ability and graduated with a Doctorate in genetics. For the next eight years he looked over his shoulder, frightened. After he graduated, he was approached by a company, called Pinehearst, to join their ranks. Apparently the Company were not the only ones keeping an eye on him. Pinehearst knew about him and his skills, and they wanted him in.
At first he only worked on gene therapy and genetic treatment for diseases. Pinehearst may have known he was an evolved, but he didn't know that they did. That would all change when the bomb went off in New York. Like most people, Abraham was at first shocked. Then his nature kicked in, and he became curious.
Then he found out that it was an evolved that caused the explosion. Then another, this time metaphorical, bomb dropped. He was contacted by Alison Meier, the head geneticist for Pinehearst, and more properly 'brought into the fold'. He was told about almost everything. The presence of evolved, how numerous they were. That they knew he was one of them. That the day he forgot was caused by an organization known as the Company. They left out some details.
They didn't tell him that his father wasn't killed by the Company. They also didn't tell him about Arthur Petrelli. They asked him to begin working with a team to research the nature of evolved abilities. In early 2008, their research began to pay off, and the team was given the go ahead to begin work on a serum to induce evolved abilities in non evolved individuals. So far, the results haven't been very.. successful.
