Background

He grew up terribly poor in Georgia, on the outskirts of Savannah, more or less raised by his grandparents. When his grandfather passed on, his grandmother moved the pair of them to live with kin in New York. While it was serious culture shock, it was also love at first sight….and Al determined that his dream job would be the NYPD. Since the department requires either two years military service or a college degree, and the former is far more affordable than the latter, he blithely enlisted and did a couple of short tours in Iraq, before coming back and joining the police academy.

The explosion killed what was left of his family, and left him irrevocably alone.

The job was all he had left, and he was one of those who actually volunteered to demonstrate his abilities when Nathan Petrelli called for examples of the Evolved. There was a last fragment of that stubborn naivete that let him believe that humanity might accept such abilities, especially when they were being used for the good of the public. He was, of course, turned upon. Hounded out of his beloved job and into an attempt at anonymity. Though he fled before the Linderman Act was passed, he'd outed himself publically - it was as bad as registration. HE took what he could and fled to the edge of the unlivable zone, ending up eking out a meagre existence - squatting and driving a cab.

His fury at the government's treatment of the Evolved grew slowly. Inchoate and lacking focus at first… but then PARIAH pulled off their first public op, and Alex knew he'd found some very like-minded individuals. He bided his time, but slowly worked his way in. He's nominally a cabbie, since it gives him reason to be anywhere in the city, after all, but his real work is with them, so far as he's concerned.
