Background

Ariel grew up in southern Texas, went to school in southern Texas, started working in a practice in southern Texas but always dreamed of moving somewhere else. New England, maybe. New England would be a fascinating place.

She thought Colby Martinez was a fascinating person, after meeting the young Latina at her own mechanic shop. One thing led to another, and Colby used her shop's profit to move them both across the country — to New York City.

Ariel started her own small psychiatric practice, wanting to make a difference in the lives of everyone she could. Her ideals infected Colby, coaxed the other woman into signing up for the NYPD Academy. After Colby graduated in 2002, now an actual police officer, they made their union official.

The Midtown Explosion of 2006 and the revelation of the Evolved in early 2007 brought more changes to their lives. Ariel, compassionate and helpful soul that she was, began working with Evolved individuals, helping them to cope with and control their abilities.

In the summer of 2008, Ariel and Colby began discussing the possibility of adopting a child. These plans were cut short by Ariel's inadvertent death at the power of one of her own patients.
