Daniel Lawrence "D.L." Hawkins had been a hard-worker and a family oriented individual his entire life. Raised by his Nana, D.L. was given the essentials of being a good man, blessed with the morals of his elders and slapped back into shape should he ever step out of line. It was a solid upbringing that would prepare him for his life as an adult. Unfortunately, love can make even the most good-hearted of men do some of the craziest things.
Meeting Niki Sanders was perhaps one of the greatest gifts that could've happened to D.L. Their love was real and that's all that mattered. They were married and later produced a son, Micah, who became another of the great gifts that the world would be given to D.L., a reward for his passion and hard working ethic. He had produced a family that he could love and be proud to provide for as the man of the house.
Unfortunately, it was this inability to give them the world that caused D.L. to stray from his Nana's teachings and move towards a much more selfishly ethical mindset. He wanted to give his wife and son everything and would do some shady things to get it. Seeing as how he worked construction for another D.L (Daniel Linderman), it would make sense that he use this as an opportunity of a lifetime. So he hatched a plan to steal about 2 million dollars from Linderman and move so far away that finding him would be too much trouble. Things didn't exactly turn out the way he planned, though, as his crew was found brutally murdered and D.L. was arrested for their deaths.
Knowing quite well that he was innocent of murder, D.L. did the only thing he could think of to do. He broke out of prison so that he could get back to his family. A family that needed him. A family that believed he was a murderer. They needed to understand that it wasn't him and that he was not the man that the police and everyone else was making him out to be. it was taxing, but he managed to track Niki and Micah down. He explained to them that he was, in fact, framed and that he was going to clear his name. And that he had a plan to do it.
Nothing ever really goes according to D.L.'s plans, though. By the time D.L. got to the money launderer he was going to use for proof, it was too late. The money launderer had been brutally murdered, in much the same manner as D.L.'s crew. Something didn't add up. Even a confession from his estranged wife added to the confusion. Things didn't really clear up until D.L. caught Niki uncovering the two million dollars that, more or less, belonged to D.L.! Finally, D.L.'s eyes were opened to the lying of his wife! There was a serious physical confrontation that resulted in D.L. showing Niki (Jessica, actually) his ability first hand. Literally. With his wife down for the count, D.L. took Micah and fled.
On the run from Niki and the authorities and very likely Linderman also, D.L. and Micah were on the road trip of justice. It was a combination of Micah's instance about helping "Mom" combined with the tracking talents of Jessica that had D.L. lingering long enough for Jessica to catch them. Another fight broke out between the two, with Micah caught in the crossfire. This brought Niki out of Jessica, for D.L.'s own eyes to see. Which was something that he needed to see.
When Micah is kidnapped, all the bets were off. Teaming up with his wife for a daring rescue attempt, D.L. and his family were right at Kirby Plaza when the bomb went off. Using his ability, D.L. attempted to protect both himself and Micah from the blast. It worked, but not as well as he had originally hoped. The atomic shockwave did a number on both D.L. and Micah, leaving the father in an unconscious heap not too far from the blast site. He and Micah were both found by a very pissed off Linderman.
Linderman proceeded to heal D.L. of his injuries, but crushed his heart when he told him that Micah had died of his. Linderman also proceeded to fill D.L.'s head with the death of his wife, also by way of the bomb. It didn't take long for Linderman to twist D.L. back into working for him. He had nothing else to live for, which put him in the perfect position to be a puppet for Linderman. For about three years D.L. worked as a Ghost for Linderman. He basically was the go to guy for stealth, infilrtration and retrieval assignments. If it wasn't nailed down and Linderman wanted it, D.L. was sent to get it. In whatever spare time he had, D.L. was working out or sparring with the more combative Lindergoons. It was almost like he was back in prison.
It was early in 2009 that D.L. was contacted by a technopath that went by the handle of R.Ajas. Wary, obviously, D.L. wasn't fit to listen to this R.Ajas until the latter promised him that he knew that his son (and wife) were alive and that he could tell him where to find them. All R.Ajas asked in return was that D.L. assist him with one tiny little project: constructing a computer hardware based device and secretly attaching it to a computer server in a little place referred to as the Pentagon.
Surprisingly enough, D.L. actually managed to get this job done. It worked out great and R.Ajas came clean with the fact that he was downloading a list of names that the government was planning to arrest and shove in a secret prison. Obviously, R.Ajas was going to need D.L.'s help to save them. D.L. was getting in over his head, obviously. Taking on the government was a whole different angle entirely. R.Ajas needed to up the ante and thus revealed to D.L. that he was, in fact, Micah, D.L.'s long thought dead son. Micah's body was off, in a vegetative coma from the Midtown explosion, but his mind managed to disembody itself from the body as raw information. D.L. was also introduced to R.Ajas's mentor: Drucker. If all that wasn't enough, D.L. was also let in on the fact that Niki had been working with the Company. Even worse? She was now on the government capture list for "Moab", that whole secret prison deal. Obviously, Micah sent D.L. out to rescue Niki.
It didn't go as planned, to say the least. D.L. was caught right outside of Niki's Staten Island apartment, while she was being grabbed herself. D.L., unfortunately, had to deal with The Haitian, which didn't go well. D.L. was apprehended, mind wiped and tossed into Moab's "Red Level", where prisoners never got the chance to even begin to see the light of day. Clearly, Niki never got the chance to know that D.L. had come to resuce her.
For the next month, D.L. was locked down in solitary confinement. Trapped, all alone and with his power chemically negated, D.L. had no hope of getting himself free. Nobody was coming to rescue him, as far as he knew. Not that he knew much, considering that his memory had been wiped all the way back to a few weeks prior to the bomb happening. Everything he had just known as gone. Everything.
April 7th, 2009 is when things got even more confusing. Gunfire rang out in the halls outside of D.L.'s cell. Shouting followed. High voltage electricity made way for the darkness. When D.L, woke up, he was in the basement of a bar in New Orleans, Lousiana. Which was several hundred miles away from the Moab facility in Utah. Turns out the bar was owned by a man named Gideon d'Sarthe. Penniless, hunted by the government, the Company and Linderman, D.L didn't actually have many options to his name. He offered up his unique skill set to d'Sarthe's people, while spending the next several months trying to catch up on the three years he lost. He (re)learned about the explosion in New York and knew he was being hunted, but he couldn't single out by who.
While trying to piece his life back together, still down in New Orleans, D.L. ended up crossing paths with his family. He had been trying to stay away from them, for their own safety, but fate had different things in mind. St. Joan had been doing vigilante work against the d'Sarthe gang. It caught up to her, though, when they figured out who she was: Monica. The gang had kidnapped Nana and Damon, in order to get to her and D.L. found himself in a very difficult position. Blood was thicker than water and he sided with his family, saving all three of his family members from the gang he was affiliated with. D.L. made sure to cover the hell out of his tracks, though.
D.L. couldn't stay, though. Just by Monica knowing he was in town put her and the rest of the family in danger. So D.L. moved himself out to Chicago, where he could hook up with Gideon for more face time. It was about time to meet the man that was providing D.L. with steady "work" and considerable income. As fate would have it, Gideon had a golden opportunity that was just begging for D.L.'s attentions. Gideon d'Sarthe had decided to bring his operation to New York and to take Daniel Linderman out: for good. D.L. was offered a nice slice of this pie. Even with his staggered memory, D.L. still remembered the blood money and the grip that Linderman held on his family for so long. Not to mention, that d'Sarthe's connections could help him find a memory manipulator. It truly was an offer that D.L. couldn't refuse.
D.L. showed up in New York in August of 2010. His orders were to keep a low profile, while Gideon got some things in motion. Which is what he did. He kept his public appearances very low and mostly just hid out. Gideon contacted him with a gig in November of the same year. The task was simple enough. Gideon had a client that needed a known terrorist by the name of Rupert Carmichael apprehended down in Baltimore. Teamed up with one of Gideon's hitmen, Jacquelin, D.L. tackled the gig with confidence and a trump card.
Unfortunately, even that wasn't enough. D.L. nearly had Carmichael, until an unknown party filled Carmichael full of holes. D.L. was forced to return to Gideon, empty-handed. Which was not the best thing in the world. This was merely a lead in to even more craziness in the city, as the tragic riots happened the next day. Which caused an entirely new set of problems, each branching off from a different fork in his road of life.
Which Way?
D.L.'s a very easy individual to read. He doesn't take a lot of time masking his emotions or trying to hide who he is. He exhibits a certain freedom when it comes to wearing his emotions out in the open. He has an extremely loyal and loving personality when it comes to his family, as they will always be put first in his life. Even when things are looking like they can't get any worse. It is his love for his family that fuels his determination and drive. He will do anything within his power and even beyond to protect and provide for his family members and other loved ones. He is always willing to go the extra mile, which is a good trait to have. Even if that mile takes him on the other side of the law.
While D.L.'s heart is in the right place, his ambitions can lead him down paths that someone like him normally wouldn't take. He is gray, at best, when it comes to his morality. He will break the law, F the system and anything else that he needs to do in order to prove something or provide for those that he cares about. He has no issues with violence, on any level and will stop at nothing sometimes. He can be relentless that way. Even if D.L. is somewhat slow to anger, the aftermath or the wrath of his anger knows no bounds. Those that have crossed him to the level of him needing to seek vengeance? Well, death is not even a fitting punishment. By that same complex token, killing is something of a last resort.
It should come as no surprise that D.L. has trust issues of the highest caliber. Anything like law enforcement or government agencies, they cannot be trusted at all. Criminal masterminds and the like? Only can be trusted so far as his next gig with them. His family can be trusted, though he does remain wary more often than not nowadays. Sometimes D.L. feels as if the entire world is against him and he will do whatever he can to stay on top of it.
D.L. is also something of a lost soul. He's a man that's lost everything, multiple times and is trying to get his life back on track. Things keep getting in his way though. It's a true test of his worth and his drive. He truly believes that everything will work out in the end, but even with that hidden optimism, he continues to push and strive to make everything right. To put everything back the way it was. D.L. just wants his life back.
D.L. has been gifted with the blessing of intangibility. This is commonly referred to as Phasing. The basic foundation for this ability is the fact that he can turn himself and anything that he touches incorporeal, which allows them to pass through (or be passed through by) solid objects. D.L. is very well trained in this ability, as he has exhibited it for years and showed no signs of ever having issues with his ability. He has, for all anyone knows, mastered the different facets of this ability and could be considered something of an expert in the realm of Phasing. It is with this knowledge that he's extended his Phasing ability to beyond the normal foundation limits.
Phasing, by definition, protects D.L. from any and all physical attacks that may be exhibited upon his person. Depending on his level of intangibility, he may even be protected from energy based attacks, such as electricity. While Phased, he can remain stationary while Phased during earthquakes or other world shattering issues, as he would not be physically grounded to the world in order to be disturbed. Gaseous and other like styled attacks have no affect on D.L. while he's intangible, as he's not tangible enough to breathe them in.
Due to D.L.'s expertise, he can maintain his Phased state indefinitely, as long as he remains conscious. The moment D.L. loses his consciousness, he will revert back to his normal physical state.
- Personal Intangibility: D.L. can instantaneously turn himself and anything that he may be wearing or holding intangible. This can be done via his entire body or just specific body parts. D.L. is also capable of Phasing just himself, while leaving objects attached to him in the tangible realm. They will, obviously, not be held up by his intangibility, but it is still something he can do. While intangible, D.L. retains all of the proper functions of his body, just in an incorporeal form.
- Shared Intangibility: D.L. can spread his intangibilty to others that he can touch, this will include their objects and attire, as well as anything they are touching. D.L. himself is capable of phasing somewhere around the 300 to 350 lbs. range of additional weight with himself.
- Environmental Intangibility: D.L. can use his ability to affect the environment around him or to allow himself to interact with the environment in different ways. While Phased, D.L. can "slide" around on solid objects as if he were air. This allows him to move like a ghost, sliding up and down stairwell banisters or other means of more speedy transport. He can effectively use this to travel along roads or walkways also, without the issue of moving one foot in front of the other. In addition to his own intangible interactions with his environment, D.L. can also create intangible environments on a limited scale. At best, D.L. can extend his own intangible form to three feet around him. He must be touching something in order to do this, as it will take on the domino effect, as previously theorized. This allows him to phase things like the floor or the ground for ranged attacks or quick escapes. D.L. can also phase solid objects, like walls or doors, to the point of being able to see through them in a filtered intangible style.
- Item Intangibility: D.L. can phase objects with his touch. This enables him to do things like create "holes" in walls, without there actually being a hole. He can also phase objects that people are holding, without phasing them, as long as he can touch the objects. Which is perfect for disarming people of their weapons or relieving them of their valuables. He can also phase objects partially and remove sections, such as bars on a jail cell or the door of a safe. This is only possible while D.L. is touching the objects. Item Intangibility is instantaneous.
- Disruptive Intangibility: D.L. can use his intangibility to disrupt the inner workings of both devices and people. His rearranged molecules causes a disruptive effect in machinery and electronics, which causes them to break down internally and stop working. These things must be restarted and rebooted before they will work again and even though there is no guarantee that they will be in any useful working shape. By that same token, D.L. can enter parts of his body into people and cause their body's metabolic process to be disrupted and thus causing them intense pain. D.L. can use his entire body to do this, even allowing people or objects to pass through his intangible body and producing the same effects.

Skills
D.L. is beyond adept at both blending and not being seen. He's very well versed in the art of making his presence unknown, even without the use of his ability. If D.L. doesn't want to be found, he more than likely won't be.
D.L. has become something of a master at breaking and entering. Though, with his ability, he tends to just have to 'enter'. Either way, he has amassed a fountain of knowledge on this particular subject which makes getting into anywhere pretty much a piece of cake for him.
D.L. is a jack of all trades. He has considerable knowledge in almost every blue collar area humanly possible, from construction to janitorial to firefighting… he's a very well-rounded individual when it comes to those different talents.
D.L. has a very long history of physical violence, from just growing up to prison fights to being muscle and anything else. He's very good at dealing with people in a violent manner, handling multiple opponents and even fighting dirty.
From picking pockets to cracking safes and other venues of physical theft, D.L. has managed to become something of an expert in this realm also, at least with his ability. WIthout it, he's still a pretty solid thief.
Considering his constant line of work and his tendency to need to not exist, D.L. is adept at living 'off the grid' and keeping himself from having to deal with the trials and tribulations of existing. He knows how to keep a low profile, be on the run and even travel with companions while doing so.
Having been capable of planning a heist as well as setting up the crew for it, D.L. shows some considerable leadership skills and potential. While he may let his emotions control his actions more often than not, he's still capable of keeping a level-head in stressful or dangerous situations. He is the one to follow.
Maybe it is because he's a big black man, but D.L. has learned how to be an intimidating individual. Sometimes it is just a glare, sometimes it is a display of his ability or his strength. D.L. will use whatever he needs to in order to keep the upper hand, mentally, in any given situation.
As an on-again, off-again criminal, D.L. has some connections with the underworld. He makes a lot of deals with devils and crimelords, throughout the nation, which gives him access to some of their resources and other talent, as well as numerous jobs to select from. Availability of these resources and gigs depends on his status with said criminals in question.
