The only child of a middle-management dad and a computer-programming mom, Elaine Adie Darrow was expected to be exactly middle-class, just as her parents were. Both working parents brought in enough money to be comfortable, and with her mother's frugality and father's wise investments, they made it through most circumstances without any financial troubles. In general, their life was average, middle-of-the-line, and no one reached for much of anything exceptional.
Elaine followed suit. While, as a child, she wasn't exceptional, she grew up with decent grades, acted in a couple of school plays, and enjoyed playing softball. She wasn't exceptional by any means, but had the average lifeā¦ the occasional bully, wins and losses at games, the crush on the guy that all the girls liked, the classic experiences of the American teen. She was never expected by her parents to be anything beyond what they were, which is why Elaine's relationship with her parents was never as close as the girl might have hoped.
Elaine, while managing just fine in her ordinary life, idealized the quirky people at school. She never felt fully unique, extraordinary, or anything other than 'Plain Elaine'. So, while Elaine never quite managed to get the guts up to try and be a mover and a shaker, she lived vicariously through her friends: the nerds, the rebels, the outcasts, and the socially awkward. While never seriously pursuing the things she wanted, Elaine had an interest in plenty of diverse things; she enjoyed acting, tried her hand at the basics of the violin, and studied history just enough that she was a little embarrassed about the random facts she knew.
Her love of history ended up being the one thing that kept her from being a part of history. Her passion for the subject grew out of a class project in fifth grade in which she was asked to make her family tree and share some family stories. While Elaine had enjoyed history before, the idea of it being so personal and tied to her caused her to entirely throw herself into the project. She traced her family's line back as many generations as she could back to when her family came from the UK to the US. It was this project that caused Elaine to be a little more daring when it came to her life—she had a passion and now the will to pursue it.
At first, the study abroad program was something she was hesitant to do—it would put her out of her comfort zone, but on the other hand, it had exciting opportunities and it would be something unique and interesting. Her freshman year of high school would be a unique one; for the first semester, she'd spend her life on a teacher-led trip through Europe. Unfortunately, it was cut short on November 6th, 2006, three months into the trip.
Elaine thrived on the trip. She also changed. She was fourteen and developing as a person and as an Evolved. At first, Elaine was simply surprised at the fact she was doing well in the language classes and picking up on it quickly. As time went by, she noticed she was picking it up /far/ faster than the other students, so she downplayed her knowledge, just to be on the safe side. She had no idea it was an Evolved ability and didn't learn it was until several months after the Bomb.
When the Bomb went off, the students who lived in the New York area were flown home to be with their families. Unfortunately for Elaine, when she got to the airport, there was no one to pick her up. Turns out that the buildings that both her parents worked in were located in the blast zone, and poor Elaine was left an orphan.
Now orphaned, Elaine found herself in a dangerous situation. She was young, alone, and a chaotic event had taken over her life. She was rounded up, like the rest of the orphaned kids, and shipped off to whatever facility they had room for her in. She was shuffled from place to place, never fully finding a home.
On Feb. 17th, 2007, when it was revealed to the world about people with powers, Elaine was thrilled. She was able to feel connected to something for the first time since the bomb went off. Several months later, in June, when the Linderman Act passed, she contemplated registering. After a few months, she voluntarily registered. Her life was led, passed through from various different facilities, in a blur of motion. She never felt like she had very much time to stop and think about life, as it was mostly about survival.
Two years later, a couple months shy of her 17th birthday, the Lighthouse opened. As an Evolved, she ended up there for a few short months until an unfortunate incident in the middle of the night involving a bit of an explosion shut down the Lighthouse for a while. At that time, she disappeared for a while and tried to make it on her own, where she's been ever since.
Elaine, while on all appearances is 'average', is a lover of all things not. She's fascinated by people and their unique differences on all levels. She's passionate, and while she was once a little hesitant to jump into things, is now very much a fan of carpe diem. She likes to take opportunities (ones she thinks are wise), and she'll do it with a smile, even if it goes wrong. When it comes down to it, she thrives off of connections and interactions with other people, and she's much more of a group person than a solo act. She is, for the most part, unafraid to get her hands dirty and jump into a conversation with someone she finds interesting, and even if she doesn't have a reason to talk to them, she'll improvise her way through the conversation if the whim strikes her.
While friendly, talkative, and open, Elaine tends to value the judgments of others a bit too highly. She often finds herself a little on the hurt side by rejections from others of any sort. She's very reluctant to show any weakness or sadness on her part in front of others, and she's built up a hard exterior of strength and friendliness, that it's often hard to see how alone she tends to be on the inside. While she takes most things in stride, if something's said to her that she takes personally, it'll hit good and hard, she'll likely be able to hide it, and then will entirely break down later while alone.
Elaine's Evolved ability is omnilinguistics. This is the ability to rapidly comprehend and learn any spoken or written language. To learn a language, Elaine has to be exposed to it in the medium in which she wants to learn it (i.e. hearing the language to be able to speak it, reading the language to be able to write or read it). The more exposed Elaine is to the language, the faster she learns it.
The effects of the ability are immediate. While she does not learn the entire language all at once, an exposure to a five minute conversation between two people in a language she doesn't know teaches her the basics, while studying a few pages of a children's book would allow her to start reading and writing at a basic level as well.
The effects reach exponentially as well. The more conversation she hears, the faster and more she learns. Several hours of conversation can give her mastery, and a day of exposure can grant her fluency. Combining this with a natural knack for accents, with a little practice, after having had exposure and communication in the language for a few days, she could easily fool even native speakers into thinking it was a native language for her.
(Note that the accents do not come from this ability, but from her own natural ear for hearing/understanding accents.)
Any language can be potentially learned given enough exposure, and these languages can include man-made languages, so long as they have sufficient language rules to truly classify it as a language, even if it does not have an extensive vocabulary. Some examples of this may include Tolkien's various fantasy-based languages, Klingon, and other fantasy and sci-fi based languages.
