Background

Elisabeth Harrison was born on the Upper West Side of NYC and spent her formative years doing what any well-bred young daughter (the only child) of two lawyers did — going to school, getting good grades, being athletic and popular, and just generally living the 'good life.' Her childhood was perfectly normal, and her family was well-off enough to have a housekeeper and a nanny when Liz was very young. As an only child, she was pampered but not spoiled. When she graduated high school, however, she threw her lawyer-parents for a major loop. Instead of attending one of the Ivy League schools, to several of which she was accepted, Liz opted to attend Western Illinois University for their stellar criminal justice program. Her parents were not exactly surprised that Liz would be a do-gooder in the world — but a cop? They wanted so much better for her than that. They attempted several times to talk her into a pre-law program, but Liz held firm. Ultimately, her parents were forced to agree; she had a full scholarship to the school. Graduating with top honors four years later in 1997 with a degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration with a minor in Homeland Security, Liz landed a job as an officer with the NYPD.

Given when she started with the police, it is perhaps not surprising that she would rise through the ranks somewhat quickly. Liz was good at her job, and barely three years after she started, the attacks of 9/11 happened. It was during this crisis that something else happened — Elisabeth began manifesting abilities that just did not make sense. She first noticed it while she was directing people out of the city. Coated in dust and debris, it was paramount to evacuate people in as orderly a fashion as possible, and Liz tended to find that people in her immediate area calmed quickly and followed orders very quickly. She didn't think much of it at first, but it kept happening. And in several cases, when she came upon looters or people fighting or a group in a panic, she found that it took little time for her to get them under control. When she took her turn at Ground Zero (the first one), Liz was able to calm panic-stricken and terrorized survivors as they were extricated from the rubble. In the midst of the chaos, she also learned that whatever it was that she was doing had a more destructive component — she turned to shout after a pickpocket who was cleaning out the pockets of one of the victims, and when she did, and entire wall of rubble collapsed just behind the perp. Luckily enough, it was chalked up to 'unstable wreckage.' When all the dust from the incident finally settled and Liz was able to take some time off, she took off out to her parents' house in the Adirondacks to recuperate and try to figure out just what the heck was going on.

After spending several weeks learning at least the rudiments of these amazing and terrifying abilities she suddenly had, Elisabeth had to make a choice. Go back to the police work, or do something else. She enjoyed police work, and when she went back to the city, Liz made a point of speaking to her captain. She didn't want to go the route of homicide detective or narcotics like so many other young officers. She wanted to become a hostage negotiator. With her record and the reports of her effectiveness at crowd control and dealing with survivors and victims, her captain endorsed her requestion and put her on the career path that she would follow for the next five years. She trained hard, learned as much as she could, and became a good negotiator. In those years, she refined her skills in the sonic ranges during her spare time and found that if she could talk to a target directly — either via bullhorn or just shouting, she tended to do much better than when a phone was used. Her abilities gave her an edge in certain kinds of negotiations. And she used them shamelessly. Until the day of the Bomb.

The 2006 Bomb changed everything. Not just for New York, for the world. And for Liz herself. She lost her mother in the blast — her parents' law office was in Midtown. Her father survived by the grace of accidentally leaving his briefcase back at their home — he was in the Upper West Side when the bomb went off, far enough away to avoid most of the incident. In the aftermath, Liz tendered her resignation from the police force. Grief-stricken and terrified by all that followed the blast, she withdrew entirely from her original career. Too much attention was being brought to bear on the people known as Evolved. Realizing that she herself was one of them, and with all the publicity surrounding the situation and all the pressure for people to register themselves over the ensuing year, Elisabeth went back to school and got her certifications to become a music teacher. With the dearth of teachers in the New York area, she had no trouble getting up to speed quickly enough to get a job. She sat on the sidelines for two years, the need to do more, to help, slowly growing to the point that she could no longer contain it.

In December 2008, following an attack on Washington Irving High School that nearly killed Elisabeth herself and did kill a number of children and teachers in the hall behind her, Liz finally stepped up. A position on the SCOUT squad was offered, and she took it at the same time she got involved with Phoenix. It required her to Register, which she is distinctly unhappy about but doing it voluntarily meant she was able to only show them aspects of her powers that she chose to.

In the past two years, Elisabeth has grown into one of the better connected individuals in the city. Between SCOUT work, NYPD contacts, Phoenix and Ferrymen contacts, and just her own sense of when to jump into a situation, she became one of the leaders of the counter-terrorism factions of Phoenix and later of Endgame, a group run by Richard Cardinal. In late August of 2009, she was captured by Humanis First and tortured for several days, culminating in a gunshot to the head that by all rights should have killed her. Instead she survived it, missing a decade of memories but alive and whole. In the year that followed, she became still more active on the streets and ultimately her role in those activities was outed. In exchange for a full-on Presidential pardon for "terrorist activities," Elisabeth was recruited (to use the term loosely) to a team that was once again going after the Vanguard on a worldwide level.

This set of teams accomplished their goals, but in the aftermath — an aftermath that included Elisabeth being offered a job on FRONTLINE — questions have come up about what we were actually doing out there. A lot of the Vanguard's toys are suddenly turning up in US government hands, being used even on FRONTLINE units. As 2010 drew to a close, Endgame — which has suffered a great deal of loss and hurt over the year — nearly destroyed itself. But there is still work to be done. And Elisabeth is bound and determined it will be handled.

Psych Profile

Elisabeth was raised in a household of lawyers, taught that everyone has rights — even criminals. Though her parents are/were real estate lawyers, they instilled in Elisabeth the ideals that later drove her to become a police officer. "To protect and serve" is more than a catch phrase to Liz. She was raised a pampered, though not spoiled, princess — an only child, given every opportunity. She was popular, she is attractive, outgoing, friendly, and generally a nice person. And when it came time to choose a life for herself, she chose to serve. Initially as a cop, but later as her powers made that kind of job a good bit more perilous for her — she had no desire right now to be registered; not until it shakes out what that will mean for people like her — she continued to serve her community as a teacher. She believes that each child deserves the very best she can give, just as when she was an officer she did her best to make sure everyone was handled with respect. Now that she is one of the hunted minority, she is more aware than ever of individuals' rights — so she watches the world around her very carefully right now.

In general, she tends to be a reasonably upbeat person. She also tends to hide when she's NOT doing all right behind a smile and a slew of baked goods and casseroles for friends and co-workers. She has no compunction about dropping off baskets and baskets of sweets that are the inevitable aftermath of any kind of upset in her life. She is a woman at ease with herself most of the time. She may question her own choices from time to time, but she's confident and generally honest with the men in her life. She chooses to take an unconventional (for females, anyway) path through relationships, but it seems to serve her well — there is rarely drama in her personal relationships and she likes it that way. Cops are a bad bet when it comes to long-term, and she knows it.

She has recently, due to being held and tortured, developed some psychological issues that have been mitigated by a judicious application of dream therapy (courtesy of Hokuto) and use of a shrink. There are some effects that are likely to be permanent, however. The loss of about ten years of her life — the years from before high school graduation in 1993 to 9/11, 2001 — has had an immense impact on her. They are years with her mother that she will never get back. She will likely always sleep with a small nightlight and still has panic attacks in the dark, and at least for the moment, her hypervigilance and paranoia are not actually overkill.

She has not drifted from the mores taught to her as a child — everyone, even criminals, have rights. And all should be judged innocent until proven guilty. The system hasn't caught up with the reality of Evos living within it, but she hopes that someday it will. In the meantime… there are people jumping through time who are screwing things up even more than we ourselves are. Elisabeth has become a soldier with all it entails; she will go to the ends of the world to protect those who are hers. And in truth, she'll go out of her way to protect anyone who needs it.

Evolved Ability

The ability to manipulate sound in both the normal human hearing ranges as well as into the infrasound and ultrasound ranges. Elisabeth has great facility with a number of aspects and continues to learn more.

Infrasound
The range of normal human hearing is 20 to 24,000 Hz. In learning about her power, Liz learned that subsonic sounds (infrasounds), those from 17 Hz down to the 0.001 Hz range, have a major impact on the human ear and body. And they are not impeded by physical objects — these are the same kinds of sounds that occur in nature with earthquakes and volcanic explosions. She began to practice with her power and has learned that she can manipulate sound waves with great effectiveness down into the subsonic ranges, not just for hypnosis purposes. A subsonic soundwave attack, not audible to a target, can cause physical and emotional responses — something she already knew from her use of it as a hypnotic/telepathic tool. The physical response is generally intense vertigo, the results of which are dizziness, nausea, the inability to keep one's balance, and in cases where she can sustain a direct attack for 10 seconds or more, potentially explosive vomiting as the body responds to the sensation of spinning. The emotional effect of infrasounds on a target cause feelings of anxiety, uneasiness, extreme sorrow, revulsion, fear, or chills up their spine. (Taken from http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Infrasound) Once Elisabeth stops the direct attack, the physical and emotional effects will taper off within a couple of minutes, but those minutes can be crucial in terms of survival sometimes. This attack can be used on a single vector or as an area effect, but the trick is — ANYONE in the range of the target has the same problem, including allies! So it has to be used judiciously.

Subsonic Hypnotic Suggestion
The first use she ever made of the ability was a subsonic carrier wave that seems to have hypnotic properties. The ability stood her in good stead in things like riot and crowd control because she could use it through a bullhorn to reach large groups of people, calming them and keeping order. (It could, in theory, also be turned to causing a riot, but that's not really in her personality make-up.) It was also very useful in hostage negotiations if she could get the perp to either talk with her face-to-face or via megaphone instead of by phone — the ability doesn't seem to work over phone lines or cellular systems.

Concussive Shockwaves
The second application that Liz has learned about is far more destructive and she has never really had reason to actually use it on purpose. It is a sonic shockwave — a pressure wave of air. Think of the sound coming from speakers at a huge concert — you can feel the beat in the ground and through your own body. This is the effect that this application of the ability has. It is a forcible push of sound waves through the air, much like the waves of the ocean, and they can do a good deal of damage. She has in the past shattered windows and even knocked down unstable structures with this ability, and the pressure wave has the potential to physically shove a person away from her (though not necessarily send them flying as in a comic book) or to burst eardrums. It is not in Liz's nature to want to destroy things, however, so her practice with this ability has been limited.

Silence Bubble
Under Conrad Wozniak's tutelage, Elisabeth began to learn and perfect the 'silence bubble' that Con used regularly. It is essentially a manipulation of the local sound waves so that within a certain radius, all sounds reflect back into the circle so that a conversation cannot carry beyond the boundary of the bubble. From the inside, everything outside seems to be muted; from the outside, the people within seem to be basically talking with a mute button on. It's a good way to ensure privacy for a conversation in a public place, because directional mikes and such rely on sound waves carrying—in this case, they don't. Elisabeth has managed a radius of about 15 feet from herself thus far, though Conrad has said that limitation is primarily in her mind — he can do far larger ones.

Hearing/Listening Stunts
In addition, Elisabeth has been actively practicing long-range eavesdropping by enhancing her hearing and throwing her voice to specific targets from a distance away. Throwing her voice is a little like plain ventriloquism, except that Elisabeth can send her voice the distance of a football field to her target. The trick is she has to have a straight line-of-sight to her target(s), and anyone who steps between her and the target(s) will also hear what she says. Throwing her voice is also something that can just be done as an area effect — a really loud, surround-sound "Everyone CALMLY and CAREFULLY evacuate the building!" kind of thing that will sound like it comes from nowhere in particular. The hearing trick is actually far harder — it's something like being in a crowded room, and to hear a single voice, you have to know what it sounds like and you have to be able to filter out the surrounding noise. She's not perfect at it, but she's been practicing in Central Park and in crowded locales so that it will become a more useful skill.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound is defined as approximately 20 kilohertz and up — it begins just above the uppermost ranges of what humans can hear and beyond. Ultrasound has a variety of everyday uses and applications, from medical ultrasounds to mapping the ocean's floor to treating tumors, pulverizing kidney stones, and melting tissue for purposes of liposuction. During the attack on Pinehearst, Elisabeth had the first occasion ever to actually use this application of her ability — to both her own detriment and that of Gillian and an Arthur Petrelli clone (ramped up by Gillian's augmentation ability, Liz literally turned the two of them into bloody mist in a split second along with melting her own vocal cords into useless tissue). The sheer horror of what she wrought makes Elisabeth leery to ever try using the ultrasound ranges again.

Echolocation
Although she cannot create ultrasound frequencies, Elisabeth's ability to manipulate sound into both the ultrasonic and infrasonic ranges has a practical application in the dark. Similar to a bat, she can hear and interpret (to some degree) sound waves — in her case, she can use sound waves to give her a basic map of her immediate vicinity. It is of use only (at present) to get a feel for the shape and size of the room, whether there are obstacles in her path, whether there might be openings/doors in the wall and it has a maximum range of about 15 feet. She cannot identify the objects in her path (except really for walls, which tend to be floor to ceiling, but a TV entertainment center would pretty much look the same as a wall; a chair, table, car would all pretty much register as something about 5-8 feet tall; people and Christmas trees would all register just as solid objects about 6 feet or so tall; et cetera). But she could at least tell you 'the door is about 10 feet that way' and turn herself or a person standing next to her toward it without use of night-vision goggles. To use the ability, she has to be able to either generate a sound (a soft hum would do) within the range of human hearing or have an ambient sound that could be amplified — just as a bat squeaks, she has to have something with a source that would then bounce back. If she is attempting to hide what she's doing, it requires a level of concentration that impairs her accuracy.

Other Applications
Learning resonance frequencies and their uses may be something that Liz does in the future — the glass-shatter effect in the one instance that she did it was a concussion pressure wave, but there are other ways to do it. Things like resonating the ambient air particles to a certain frequency and just letting the chips fall where they may. Elisabeth has no idea what the actual limits of her abilities are, and in truth…. on some levels, she's not sure she wants to know. Oh, sure, a good opera singer can shatter glass with the resonance frequency of a note she hits. Liz has no idea how high or low she can go on the scale, and to learn it will require taking the chance on hurting someone — something she has not been willing to do in the past.

Skills

('Police Skills,' 'Teaching Skills,' 'Singing' and 'General Skills')

Police Skills
Liz has all the requisite training to be an NYPD police officer and an FBI-trained hostage negotiator. This includes everything from qualifying on the firing range with both her primary firearm (standard-issue 9mm) as well as her backup piece (Springfield XD compact) and learning good self-defense hand-to-hand moves to keeping up with the politics and bureaucracy of the police precincts, filling out paperwork for anything and everything, knowing the letter of the law inside and out regarding when searching and entering a domicile are allowable, knowing all the radio codes used by heart, and any number of additional skills too numerous to really list. Although she resigned after nine years on the force, she is a highly decorated officer due to the crises in which she has assisted, and recently obtained her detective's shield after returning the force in late 2008.

Teaching Certificate
Between 2006 and 2008, Liz picked up a teaching certificate for lateral entry into the field of music and took a number of music classes to get up to speed on teaching the subject. Her childhood actually gave her an edge here, and her police training was a plus for her employers too. She substituted in some of the rougher schools until landing herself a fulltime position, which she ultimately never took due to the high school being destroyed by a Vanguard attack.

Singing
As a child, Elisabeth took voice and piano lessons. She likes to sing, and in point of fact has most of the classes to qualify as a minor in Music in college (didn't finish the last couple due to time constraints). In addition, during the two years that she took off from the police force, she took voice lessons as a way of enhancing her credibility as a music teacher. One of the teachers in the school used to refer to Liz as a siren because of her ability to keep her classes calm, never knowing just how close to the truth she came. Elisabeth's voice is not operatic caliber or anything so lofty, but she has a strong voice and can carry a tune well. In point of fact, though she doesn't quite have perfect pitch, it's close — she could, conceivably, make a living on the club circuit if that were her interest. Since she returned to the police force, those lessons have gone somewhat by the wayside, but the more Liz learns about her powers, the more she also wants to be sure her voice is trained. 'Siren' might be a far more apt moniker than anyone, including Liz, has thus far realized.

General Skills
As the well-bred daughter of well-to-do parents, Liz's childhood was filled with "enriching" activities. She plays the piano and can sing (that ability now with a twist, see 'Singing'), has done a little gymnastics and ballet (did not stick with either as a child), played softball all the way through high school, speaks English and French fluently with enough Spanish to get by in New York, learned some small amount of legalese from listening to her parents discuss the law and politics all her life, and knows how to act in wealthier society as well as the lower echelons. She also loves to cook. With an Italian grandmother that she spent summers with, Elisabeth learned to enjoy cooking and feeding people - it is as much about feeding the soul as the body. When she's bored or upset, Elisabeth starts cooking and baking. She's been known to inundate her partners and co-workers in the past with baked goods when she's upset.

Aric Gibbs

The telepath — when he was that — caught hints of what Liz is and what she does. She was wary of trusting him at all. Telepathy is one of those powers she does not care for. But over time Aric has proven himself more than trustworthy. And nowadays, especially since he was taken and tortured because of his very alliance with Endgame, Elisabeth is very protective of him. He's become harder in ways she doesn't like to see and wishes hadn't happened.

Richard Cardinal

It's a relationship that has been to Hell and back. It wasn't what she was looking for. She sure as Hell never expected to fall in love with anyone — not the forever kind. And then he came along. It was just fun and flirtation and fucking. And then it was so much more. Elisabeth doesn't expect him to change for her. There are no white picket fences in this affair of the heart. What there is, however, is an abiding love. In spite of knowing that somewhere in a world that doesn't exist now he even killed her, she loves him still. She forgives it. Maybe she's just plain crazy…. or maybe there is so much more inside this man than even he knows. Whatever it is, he has her heart.

Claire Bennet

Claire Bennet is thought of as a little sister. She has given Liz unconditional support and regard; when Cardinal was believed dead after Apollo, Claire was the reason Elisabeth was able to keep it together. Taking care of "their" people took highest priority in the darkest parts of her grief. Through all the hardship that both women have suffered, Claire is for lack of any better description "hers."

Jaiden Mortlock

He's another one who snuck under Liz's radar and she found herself trusting him instinctively. Her gut again. But it's been a relationship well worth having. He has saved her life in a past that she cannot remember, and she's saved his during his childhood. They are friends, and he offers a guy's perspective in ways that Felix can't and Richard… just doesn't. Elisabeth talks to him when she needs to work through things and understand a guy's mindset on them. She trusts him with her self.

Monica Dawson

Niki's cousin by marriage — D.L.'s niece? However the relationship works out, Monica has worked for Phoenix for quite some time, though she's been out of town lately. Elisabeth has learned from her that Niki's husband is still alive, something that she and Monica agree may be best kept from Niki and Jessica until they can gather more information regarding whether the man is deliberately keeping his survival from Niki for whatever reason or whether he thinks she is the one who is dead with their son. Liz would like to give the man the benefit of the doubt after watching Niki grieve for him, but the cynical side of her has to wonder. The chance may yet come to find out.

Niki Sanders/Jessica

Niki Sanders — AKA Jessica — is someone Elisabeth met by accident and seemed to connect with. Their first meeting and subsequent friendship was wiped out of Niki's head by Jessica (and the Haitian), and their second round of friendship has been strained by the fact that Liz knew about Jessica and Niki didn't. However, following a beatdown by Jessica, Elisabeth arrested them both and chucked them in jail, revealing everything she knew to Niki. It may turn out to be the best thing that's ever happened to Niki in some ways, because it appears to be forcing Jessica to share time and body cooperatively instead of taking over whenever she wants to.

Phoenix - Now Defunct

Abby Beauchamp

Although technically not a part of Phoenix, Abby is someone that Elisabeth will trust and help whenever she can. The young woman healed her just out of the kindness of her heart, and Liz won't soon forget. Nor will she forget that Abby is probably the single most altruistic, sincerely good person out there on the ground. If Abby needs it, Liz counts herself as one of Abby's layers of protection — for all the good that did Abby. After the blonde what kidnapped onto Staten Island, Liz did everything in her power to try to bring police action to bear, with little success. By the time Phoenix and others rescued both Abby and Trask, much had happened to the healer… and Liz is doing her best just to be a good friend. Abby has more steel in her backbone than Elisabeth ever thought possible, and her respect for Abby's strength grows daily.

Cat Chesterfield

Catherine is an odd duck… she comes across as very self-contained and sort of distanced from the world around her somehow. But Liz wasn't sure if that's because she just lost a loved one or if that's her normal mode of operation. In the space of time that she's known Cat, she is learning that this is a normal state pf being for the other woman… and it's something that she's trying to learn how to relate to. She likes Cat — the woman is brilliant and well worth the trouble to get to know, from what she can tell so far. Elisabeth tends to find that the panmnesiac overthinks things far too much, but maybe that's why they get along well — there's a balance there between them. Though that's being strained a good bit lately by ideological differences.

Norton Trask

Once upon a time, two cops met and formed a friendship. It was a good, deep friendship that eventually turned to more. But circumstances conspired to put them in very different places. Norton traveled to a future that Liz would never see… and met their son. But in coming back, he understood that the boy's very existence might never happen. But he made the choice he had to for the betterment of all and dealt with the consequences. A part of her will always love him, but Elisabeth let him go. A year and a half later, he has returned to the Manhattan area because of rumors of his own presence — and Elisabeth doesn't know what to do. Her gut says trust him, but it's terribly convenient. Only time will tell.

Teo Laudani

Well, isn't he just far more than meets the eye? Nice teacher… vigilante. It's almost the same line of work. Not! Liz has had the opportunity to try to become closer to her former teacher-friend, and they've become … comrades in arms? Real friends? She's not sure. She does know that he's a good man, and she has on more than one occasion done something just because he asked. He is becoming, almost in spite of themselves, one of her closer friends — someone she can talk to who has no qualms about telling her she's got her head in her ass.

FRONTLINE

Sarisa Kershner

Kershner is the Commander of FRONTLINE now that General Sebastian Autumn has been killed in a suicide bombing (perpetrated by Claire herself). Elisabeth is uncertain of this woman, but it's clear that their agendas coincide for the time being. She wouldn't trust Kershner as far as she could throw her, but that said… she actually kinda likes her. Thus far, Kershner has played her hand pretty straight — the things she can't or won't tell Liz, she doesn't. The things she does say tend to be true. She has covered Elisabeth's ass in big ways ever since Apollo, and they have an agreement on handling certain matters. Elisabeth tells Kershner what the Shark needs to know and does occasional black ops work (which she hasn't been called on for as yet), and Kershner keeps most of Elisabeth's actions way under the radar. It's sort of … an armed truce.

Felix Ivanov

Friend. Confidante. Partner. Lover. Everyone deserves a best friend, someone that they can trust with the deepest secrets of the heart, who listens to the good and bad and loves you in spite of yourself. He is this for Elisabeth.

Matt Parkman

Matt Parkman is, by turns, a good cop and the boogeyman. During the Rickham incident, Parkman seemed to prove himself a good person as well as a good cop. He came with Rickham to the Phoenix HQ and still has not, to Liz's knowledge, turned anyone in. He's steered clear of making any waves for Elisabeth, who he knows for a fact is working with the vigilante/terrorist group. Vee used to be Kat's partner, non-Evo, in the Company back when the Company was hiding under DHS auspices. Now that the favored children have become the black sheep, Veronica still works for them. But in spite of that, she has become Elisabeth's friend. Operation Apollo — Russia/Madagascar/South America and Antarctica — brought the two women into one another's orbits and allowed them to see how the other actually operates. It seems to be one of many things that turned the tides of Veronica's opinion of Evos, and when Cardinal ate a nuke to save the world, the Company agent was the person who seemed to understand the best what it was Liz needed. Since then, they've forged enough ties to trust one another. Whether that trust will withstand what happens as the Company falls is anyone's guess — Liz is just hoping to get Vee out in one piece.
