Background

British by birth, Gladstone was born in Bristol to parents Cerise and Aiden (French and English, respectively). Growing up, his life did not contain much in the way of abnormality, although he was markedly more likely to get into mischief if he could get away with it, even resorting to lies that became more plausible and sophisticated as he grew older. The real breakthrough occurred, however, when he entered secondary education and discovered a new subject he had yet been unacquainted with; logic. The process and structure of debate fascinated him, and he was absolutely taken when he discovered the "logical" extension of his new interest; rhetoric. While his grades in maths and most subject were nothing extraordinary (although still quite good), he became well-known among his classmates for his persuasive essays and speeches as well as his seemingly natural athleticism. Upon completion of his secondary education, Gladstone fulfilled his duty as a citizen by joining the British Army.

Once there, he rose in rank relatively quickly, thanks not only to his athletic ability, but also to his convincing authority and quick yet firm grasp of small unit tactics and battle strategy. None of his peers were terribly surprised when he tried to join the Special Air Service, and only the most pessimistic of them were shocked when he made the cut. The only misgiving that his superiors had regarding him was that he seemed willing to overlook certain "offenses" if doing so was to his benefit. However, no one could have foreseen what would happen in 2000, when Gladstone was sent to intervene in Sierra Leone.

Besides the "D" squadron of the 22nd Regiment, Gladstone's unit was sent in unofficially in order to establish a staging point in the countryside. They discovered that a nearby village was being used as a holding place for some of the infamous blood diamonds that fueled the country's meager economy. While the unit was conducting reconnaissance of the area, Gladstone went to each member of his unit separately and, with his skills in persuasion, convinced each one of them to help him eliminate the others and take the diamonds. Through this complicated web of deceit, Gladstone ensured that the village was secured in short order, with the local militia being dispatched first (and at range) before the British soldiers moved in. While his comrades eliminated the remaining villagers that tried to stop them, as well as the ones who willingly moved out of their way, they efficiently and quietly killed one another until only he was left. He then lined the few remaining villagers up and executed them to complete his cover up. His unit was given a hero's funeral, while Gladstone himself was listed as Missing In Action, having fled into the shadows with several million dollars worth of diamonds.

Turning to work as a mercenary. Gladstone covertly hid, distributed and spent his wealth building a network of contacts as well as operating infrastructure, setting up for himself safe houses and weapon caches in several countries, including the United States, Mexico, and the Central African Republic; "several million dollars" found itself reduced to only a few hundred thousand in very short order, but it allowed Gladstone to establish his name in the underworld as a man who can get things done. The events in New York in 2006, however, changed his long-term plans when he realized that opportunity awaited. Relocating to the United States in mid-2007, he relocated his American base of operations to Poughkeepsie, north of New York City, making small incursions into the city to build his contact base, finally coming fully "on-line" one year later. Although he has substantial resources, they are substantial for only one man, and he needs the kind of consistent work he suspects he'll find in the city to keep his operations running. He now lurks in the light and in the shadows as it suits him, ever looking for the chance to profit from the fortunes (and the misery) of others.

Trivia and Notes:

• "Charming" is a word for fantasy superspies, not for Allen Gladstone. "Sensible" is a much better word, and to those around him, he indeed seems sensible. He is also conniving, scheming and predatory, and while he may seem pleasant enough, Gladstone is always on the lookout for a weakness to exploit. To say that he doesn't care about others wouldn't be correct, either. He is simply selective about what he *does* care about.

• Because of his SAS training, Gladstone possesses a wide variety of "occupational" skills that not only include armed and unarmed hand-to-hand combat and skill with a variety of ballistic and explosive weaponry, but also diving, parachuting, rappelling/fast roping, wilderness survival and demolitions. All of these help him in his work as a mercenary. here he shined most strongly, however, was in his quick grasp of tactical and strategic planning, as well as his seemingly natural talents in logic, debate, diplomacy and rhetoric. These skills, especially, are what contributed to getting him to where he is now, and while he's no Winston Churchill or George Washington, he is more than capable of and is, in fact, quite adept at convincing others to see things his way (even when the facts of a situation would recommend a different course of action; Gladstone's never let things like "fact" and "truth" get in his way, even if they occasionally do).

• Besides being fluent in English, Gladstone also has a working knowledge of French and even a few words of Welsh (although he could not hope to hold or follow a conversation in the latter).
