Background

Kiyoshi grew up in Manhattan on the East Side, in a -very- traditional Japanese home. Both his mother and father were born in Japan, though Kiyoshi himself was born in New York. His mother stayed at home and his father ran a successful investment company. He's always had a comfortable life; his parents are well off, and while he wasn't spoiled, he was sent to the best schools and never lacked for anything. He has two young sisters, twins, Midori and Muriko, who are five years younger than he is. He loves them dearly though they confuse him a lot, and they in turn have Ki wrapped around their finger, so to speak. His mother was the most influential person in his life, and while his father wanted him to join the family business, his mother encouraged Ki to find his own path.

He was always interested in art, and while he was decent at drawing and painting, he fell in love with photography when he made a pinhole camera in science class in junior high school. It quickly became his passion and he spent all his free time wandering the city and taking photos of anything and everything.

Kiyoshi excelled in high school, though it was through hard work rather than brilliance, and was accepted into the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU right out of high school. He's already done some freelance jobs for magazines even though he's still in college.

When the bomb went off, he was in upstate New York with his family, so they are all still alive. His parents refused to return to the city and tried to talk him out of going back, which turned in to a huge argument and has created a rift between Ki and both his parents. They rarely talk these days, though he does write to his sisters often.

He is in his final year of University, and returned to classes as soon as they restarted. Kiyoshi realized something was 'wrong' with him when he was doing a photo shoot for a school project and having difficulty getting the right lighting. When the sunlight came through a window and -bent- to end up in the spot he wanted it, he realized he had some sort of power and immediately went to get registered.

Evolved Ability

Ki has the ability to control and shift around light from any source, natural or artificial, though for some reason fluorescents are harder. He has no idea why. At least, he has the potential to do this. Right now he's brand new to the entire thing and almost all of what he does is involuntary. If he's reading and the sunlight shifts or dims, he'll move it back without actually trying to. He can't create light, say if a light bulb is burned out, he can't make it shine. He can pull light into himself in small doses, which gives him a sort of small stimulant effect, like a cup of coffee would. It also makes him glow with a soft glittery sort of look—which he -hates- with a passion, so he doesn't do that very often.

He can control light if he's within 100 feet of the source, though the farther away it is, the more difficult it is, and if he can't actually see the light it's even harder for him to do anything at all. If he was in a dark room deep inside a building, he wouldn't be able to do much, if anything.

Creating prisms and turning light into a concentrated ball as well as shifting around light sources are the easiest things for him to do. At this point Ki doesn't really have much conscious control over his power, it happens when he needs it but successful attempts to actually control it and focus it are sporadic, at best.
