Mal was born of a family that lived the American dream in the late 70's. Father was a mid level executive in a major New York business, his mother was able to stay at home and raise Malaki as well as his younger sister. They owned a condo in the city, and lived a normal life. At 18, Malaki in 1995, he graduated high school, and was enrolled at Columbia University, apparently en route to earn an MBA from the prestigious university.
It was during his freshman year that his power began to manifest. At first without conscious control, items that he would see and be able to picture in mind would disappear before his eyes and end up where he envisioned them. As time went on, he began to try and focus on this, and eventually began to learn how to control power.
By his sophomore year, he had begun to use his power knowingly for criminal enterprises. Since there was never any physical evidence, the crimes he committed were never solved. He finished earning his degree however, gaining contacts throughout the business and criminal worlds where he could 'acquire' difficult to obtain objects (pieces of art, jewlery, etc) and pass them off as needed. He purchased his own flat just off Broadway and 97th in 2004, where he still lives today.
When the 'bomb' went off in 2006 he was recovering from a night out with some friends, the explosion waking him. Rushing to his shattered south facing window he saw the cloud that was forming and unlike others that ran away from it, simply watched. With the networks gone, Mal realized a potential boon to this horrible event and gathered those friends that he felt he could trust the most. With his ability to teleport others, he guided them through a series of bolder crimes, netting the group a boon of supplies (weapons, food, ammo, cash, etc) that would help them make it until things began to settle.
Most of those that had remained with Mal 2006 and 2007 in his his now semi-fortified flat were aware of his ability quickly, and since he had helped to provide for them, kept quiet after the passing of the Linderman act. As the city recovered though, some of those 'loyal' friends, began to waver, hearing the many sentiments about the Evolved as they passed through New York. Eventually, someone turned him in for a minor gun violation knowing that he was Evolved, but as it wasn't one of his inner circle, they knew only of his 'parlor' trick variation of his power.
Mal was convicted of a Class B Misdemeanor for having the ability to teleport small objects. To change his potential image, he divested himself of many of the items remaining in his flat, and kept a clean image for the potentially frequent legal visits.
His registration is kept up to date, and he maintains his residence, his view offering a sight of the rebuilding process of the city. More recently, he has come in contact with other Evolved attempting to evade the registration process. Using his powers to their full extent, he has been able to help them escape… an act that brought the attention of the Ferrymen upon him. At this point he is aware of them, and one safehouse. His criminal activity still continues, but on a more subdued level, and only a handful of people truly know what he can do.
