Background

Deborah Marshall used to be a cheerleader and a gymnast. She was going to go to college and travel all over the country with the football team. She was going to have a damned bright future ahead of her. Then, in her senior year, the bomb went off on the other side of the country. Then the Evolved showed up. Or came out of the woodwork. They singled her out because she was popular, and they were jealous. Of this much, Debbie was certain. When she said she saw a boy pick up one of her classmates and drop her from fifty feet in the air to the pavement out in front of the school, people were slow to believe. The Evolved had been a slow reveal on that side of the country, or at least in Costa Verde. They didn't find a body. What they found was Debbie's bottle of liquor, and the teen slurring about what she saw. She was kicked off the cheerleading squad and suspended from school for consumption on the grounds. To make matters worse, she was forced into counselling, as though she were some sort of addict. She never touched another drop. Someday, people would believe her about the menace the Evolved - every last one of them - represent. And she would be stone sober when she told them.

With her scholarship options entirely off the table following her suspension, Deborah was forced to begin working slave wage jobs so she could actually attend college. To make things worse, she had to start off at community college and prove herself all over again as an achiever. An over-achiever, even. Full-time work and full-time class eventually paid off, and Deborah managed to get accepted to Columbia University in New York. The first year was hell. The freezing cold New York winter was miserable compared to one in Costa Verde, California. It only made her tougher, and more determined. It didn't prepare her for the seemingly eternal winter that came in 2009. Another thing to blame the Evolved for, along with a laundry list of other events in the city. In Deborah's mind, New York, New York was a nest of SLC-Expressive rats. And rats need to be exterminated.

Unlike many others with anti-Evolved sentiments, Deborah didn't fall in with Humanis First! or their ilk. Violence can solve a lot of problems, but only when it's backed by law. Rather than pursue a career in anti-Evo terrorism, she settled on the rather more lucrative path leading to the newly formed Department of Evolved Affairs. An Urban Studies major, with the ultimate goal of eventually obtaining a Master of Public Administration degree. Taking courses in Human Rights Studies was just a good practise in grinning and bearing, and biting back the urge to point out that it's Human Rights and not Evolved Rights. (The Evolved, of course, have no rights.) All this in spite of the message presented in those courses emphasising that everyone is equal. Deborah saw it merely as something that would look good on her resume, and impress the Department of Evolved Affairs. No longer interested in cheerleading, Deborah instead shifted her physical activities to more practical (in her mind) areas, like martial arts. Learning to defend oneself in the city of New York seemed an exceedingly good move. She supplemented with marksmanship as well, visiting the firing range with her (registered) firearm at least once a week.

The riots in New York shook Marshall to her very core, and only helped to solidify her distrust of the Evolved and all that they represent. That one man could stretch his influence so far as to all but ruin the great city with words rather than something as actively destructive as the ability possessed by the Midtown Man was shocking. She weathered the proverbial storm, and came to realise that the rules of the game had changed entirely. It wasn't just the outwardly dangerous ones that needed to be dealt with first and foremost; her suspicions were confirmed that it was all Evolved that have to be contained, for their own good and especially for the good of humans like her.

Having secured herself an internship with the Department of Evolved Affairs, and poised to graduate in the spring, Deborah is finally beginning to see the light coming back to her future. It's going to be so bright, she'll need Ray Bans.

Psych Profile

After losing her scholarship as a result of a cruel prank played on her by two Evolved classmates, Marshall developed a deep distrust and hatred for the SLC-Expressive. She had to work hard to get to where she is now, and gives an outward impression of being tough as nails, even if she's more bothered by things on the inside.

Marshall is a vegetarian, and nearly four years sober, a point she takes some pride in even if she doesn't believe she ever had a problem in the first place. That said, she doesn't shy away from functions or locations where the consumption of alcohol is expected, she simply chooses not to indulge. Even if it means holding a cosmo in her hand for the sake of appearances.

The junior agent has a love for designer clothes, shoes, shades, and bags, retaining some of her shallow nature from her younger days. While not gaudy or flaunting about it, it's rare to find Marshall without some sort of couture accessory of some worth.

Skills

Self-Defence

In a scrap, Marshall can defend herself adequately. Though she's small, she's toned and stronger than she looks. She knows how to take a fall, throw a punch, grapple, and throw an attacker if it comes to it.

Marksmanship

Some knowledge of firearms is expected when one makes it their goal to become an agent of the government. Marshall is proficient with standard issue handguns, and scores well in target practice.

Gymnastics

Not a cheerleader anymore, Marshall still has retained her skills as a gymnast, which comes in handy perhaps more often than one might expect. If you need someone to perform a handstand, cartwheel, somersault, or backflip? Marshall is your girl.

Acting

It takes some amount of skill to sit through an ethics class where the rights of both those who are SLC-Expressive and those who are not are accentuated and lauded, and not roll your eyes in disgust when you absolutely hate the Evolved. Marshall is one of those people that can plaster on a smile, and keep her true colours from showing.

Motor Vehicles

Everyone drives in California. Have you seen L.A. traffic? Marshall is no exception. She owns both a car, and a scooter. Both are green, like her eyes.

Biking

To contrast, Marshall also rides a bike around town frequently. It's good exercise, and good for the environment. Not that she's some kind of hipster or anything. Pay no attention to the scarf.

NYC Streets

Marshall makes it a point to know the shortest route to get from points A to B. Shortcuts are her forte. She should be a pizza delivery girl.

Zen and the Art of Vespa Repair

While Marshall knows next to nothing about how to fix anything that goes wrong with her car, her scooter is an entirely different matter. She maintains her Vespa meticulously. There are far fewer garages that can make repairs if something goes wrong, after all. She just makes sure nothing goes wrong!

Spanish

Growing up in California means a certain level of exposure to the Spanish language is to be expected. Marshall studied in high school and continued in college. She can both read and speak the language with a fair amount of fluency.
