Niki Sanders was the result of a genetic experiment that produced triplet girls. She was placed with Hal Sanders and Kelly Sullivan, where she had a sister, Jessica. Hal Sanders was a troubled man with deep-seeded rage issues, and frequently beat both children. Jessica was always the stronger-willed of the two girls and tended to bear the brunt of the beatings to spare her sister. At the age of eleven, Hal's beatings went too far and Jessica Sanders died at his hands. She lived on within Niki the way most siblings live on, but also by becoming the first of the young girl's split personalities. For four years, Jessica would take over when Hal would get drunk and let his fists fly. The rage continued to build within her until she had had enough. Taking control of Niki's life and her own, she packed up and she left.
While out on her own, Niki met and subsequently fell in love with and married Daniel Lawrence - D.L. - Hawkins. Ten years of marriage produced one son, Micah. D.L. worked construction for Daniel Linderman, but the money he brought home wasn't enough for the family to feel truly comfortable. D.L. hatched a plan to steal two million dollars from Linderman, and then move far, far from his reach. Theoretically speaking. Jessica stepped into the picture, teaming up with D.L.'s crew, killing them all when they turned on her after the job was done, leaving D.L. to take the blame. Niki remained unaware of Jessica's actions - and the money. With D.L. imprisoned for the murders of his crew, Niki was left alone to provide for herself and Micah. She took up stripping via webcam in order to make ends meet.
Jessica's deeds eventually caught up with Niki. She was confronted by a pair of thugs, demanding a return on the debt she owed to Linderman. During the encounter, Niki blacked out. When she awoke, she found both men brutally mutilated, and her own reflection with a finger to her lips, warning her to be quiet. This was the first time Niki was confronted directly by Jessica. It would not be the last. Blacking out later that day, Niki would find herself in front of a red Cadillac, registered in her name, with the dead men and a map in the trunk. The map directed her to the desert, where she would bury the two alongside the bodies of D.L.'s crew.
Niki was confronted by an agent of Linderman again, this time Miss Sakamoto informed her that if she seduced Nathan Petrelli, a candidate for senator, her debt would be erased. Niki agreed initially, but had second thoughts after discovering he had a family. Attempting to simply turn around and leave, a thug had the audacity to ask her if she thought walking away would be so easy. He also threatened her son. Jessica emerged and quickly took control of the situation, dropping first the thug, and then returning to Petrelli's room, where she did what Niki could not, thus freeing them both from their debts to Linderman.
Niki returned home only to be informed by state police that D.L. had escaped prison. After assuring them that he hadn't shown up at her home, they left, and D.L. confronted his estranged wife, explaining that he was framed. When D.L. said he planned to talk to the money launderer that helped to hide the money stolen from Linderman, Jessica again took matters into her own hands, beating D.L. to the punch and brutally murdering everyone gathered for a poker game held by the launderer. Niki confessed to D.L. that there had been a similar scene of carnage when she was first approached by Linderman's thugs at her home. Jessica later explained to Niki, through her reflection in the mirror, that she had killed those men at the poker game, killed the thugs, killed D.L.'s crew, and framed him for the whole deal. She was able to convince Niki that if her husband knew the truth, he would take Micah away from them. Having had the location of Linderman's stolen two million revealed to her, Niki went to retrieve it, only to be caught by D.L. and before she had the chance to explain herself, Jessica once again took over. Attempting to dispatch him, Jessica was instead introduced to D.L.'s ability first-hand when he phased his hand through her abdomen, and took Micah.
After catching up to D.L. and Micah, Jessica again engaged D.L. in combat, inadvertently striking Micah in the altercation. In her shock, Niki was able to regain control and turned herself in for murder to keep Jessica from hurting Micah ever again. Her incarceration was short-lived, however. Daniel Linderman had found a use for Jessica as an assassin, and sprung her from prison so that she could come to work for him. With Jessica in full control, she did just that. She threw Matt Parkman through a window and killed her first target with little difficulty. Her second target was to be Nathan Petrelli. Thanks to Niki's intervention, the senator was able to live to fight another day.
Linderman requested a meeting with Jessica, where he requested the use of Micah's technopathic abilities. When Jessica refused, Linderman simply had Micah kidnapped. The rescue attempt resulted in what Niki thought was the death of both her husband and son, when the bomb went off in Midtown Manhattan. In reality, D.L. used his ability to allow him and Micah to be unharmed by the blast, while Jessica took over and fled into the sewers beneath New York to escape.
In the time that followed, Jessica swore revenge against Linderman, while a third personality manifested itself in an attempt to help Niki cope - or rather not cope - with what had happened. As a teenager, Niki had run away and called herself Gina, a perpetual party girl. That bit of fantasy became yet another piece of herself to contend with. Gina's stints in control were brief at best, while Jessica more or less began to dominate Niki. The former assassin aligned herself with The Company for a time, but she was unable to change her past, or who she was. She was eventually incarcerated in Moab, where it was revealed to her by a man called Verse that her husband and son were in fact still alive. She even found herself forcibly dragged ten years into her future, to the year 2019. Her time there helped to reconcile some of the disconnect between her and her other personalities, leaving her more aware of the actions of each, regardless of who actually was in control.
Returning to her own time, Niki was informed by Elisabeth Harrison that her son had been found, but that he was dying in a New York hospital. But Niki arrived too late. It took years, but the bomb in Midtown finally claimed her son's life. Micah, physically, had died. His consciousness, however, was trapped due to his ability, leaving him able to communicate through cyberspace or something equally vague and incomprehensible to the boy's mother. There certainly is some small comfort to Niki, knowing that her son hasn't completely departed, but she still can't help but wonder if she didn't do enough to save him. A self-imposed banishment brought Niki and her alter egos to Staten Island, where she loosely associated herself with Richard Cardinal. Situation being what it was, however, even that association was left to crumble in favour of doing what she does best.
Run.
…bringing Jessica to the forefront. Jessica is strong, assertive, and what some might describe as mildly psychotic. Jessica isn't afraid to break a few eggs (or bones) to make an omelette. She'll resort to violence easily, if she decides the situation calls for it.
Gina, on the other hand, is perpetually stuck in her teenage years. She's only too thrilled that she has a fake (Niki's) ID that allows her to get into bars, where she can dance and drink the night away. Gina is assuredly the wild side of the other two women.
Niki Sanders has the ability to emit microwaves with varying results, depending on her emotional state and the prominance of the divisions of her shattered psychological make-up. Under Niki's command she can radiate an aura of microwave energy out from her body to a distance of five feet that can rise to a temperature that can cause water to boil, skin to blister and paper to combust. Unfortunately, she has absolutely no control over this ability and it is wholly tied to her emotional state. The most distraught or emotionally compromised she becomes, the more likely it is to trigger.
Leading to…
Jessica's use of the ability. Under Jessica's control, she can radiate out a fifty foot cone of microwave energy that can get hot enough to melt plastic and heat up metal surfaces. It could easily kill a human or animal within that close range in just a few short moments of boiling heat. Beyond fifty feet it takes more concentration for her to affect things; the farther away, the more it takes. This ability gets weaker as the distance increases, much like regular microwaves.
Like all liquids, she can boil blood, burn flesh, and kill someone. Mostly, she emits microwaves as a cone from her hands, beginning at a narrow band and extending outward to a fifty foot length and fifty foot width. Jessica possesses no finesse with its use, often sending a large beam of energy at something and affecting it that way, often causing an immediate reaction.
Gina can't utilize the microwave energy at all, save for an unconscious use that will serve as little more than an irritation. She radiates low-band microwave static, jamming all radio and cell phone signals within 100 feet of her. She disrupts any wireless signal broadcast through the air and either can't control it, or just doesn't know how to.

Adept in hand-to-hand combat and can even throw in an improvised weapon now and again when she needs to. Super strength aside, she's still formidable in a scrap.
Firearms training was money well spent. Handguns, sniper rifles, there's a large range of munitions that she can use to her advantage.
Aside from her son being a super genius about computers, Niki is more than competent in use of a PC, having run her own business by setting up her own website and internet friendly film equipment. She can definitely do more than Google something.
Whether it be through seduction or intimidation, Niki, Jessica, and Gina are skilled manipulators. There's little the combination of the three of them won't do to get their way.
Niki and Jessica both were devoted to Micah and did everything in their power to protect and provide for him. That instinct extends to other children.
Jessica, and by extension Niki, is exceptionally adept at finding all the best places to hide bodies. Just give her a map and X will mark the spot.
Owning a Cadillac that she's used more than once to transport bodies in means that Jessica made sure she knew how to change a flat or fix minor mechanical issues. The last thing she needs is to blow a tire, and blow her cover.
Niki used to deal at the Corinthian in Las Vegas, which left her somewhat adept at counting cards. It should be noted, however, that when the stakes are high, Niki sometimes forgets common sense and gets lost in the thrill.
Niki can keep up with the boys when it comes to doing shots, and she can hold her liquor. She can also go off the rails and overdo it, it just takes her a bit longer to get to that point.
Trivia and Other Miscellany
- Proving a bit of nurture verses nature, Niki, like her father Hal, is a bit of a drinker. She's been to AA, and the longest she stayed on the wagon is a year. With Gina to run interference, she hasn't come close to approaching that milestone again. That's her story, and she's sticking to it.
- Texas Tina worried about Niki's enthusiasm at the casino. She has a bit of a gambling problem.
- Jessica has half a strand of RNA (the symbol) tattooed on her right shoulder blade. This tattoo is not present when Niki is in control.
- Although not related by blood, Niki considers Monica Dawson her cousin. Monica is actually family to D.L.
- The name on Niki's (fake) ID is Lorine Hawk.
