Background

Originally hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Sarah Quinn came to New York after the bomb to enroll in graduate school at Columbia University. She has since become very involved in the pro-Evolved movement and can often be found passing out fliers or encouraging strangers to sign petitions to repeal the Linderman Act. The rest of her time is spent divided between studying theatre at the university and working part-time at the Surly Wench to support herself, her roommates and her pet cat, Pandora.

She identifies with the Evolved not because she's one of them, but because she understands how it can feel to be discriminated against. Back in high school, when she first came out to her parents and her peers, she was bullied by several classmates to the point where she began engaging in self-destructive behavior. She has since recovered and grown into a strong young woman who is confident not only in herself, but her ability to make the world a better, more accepting and understanding place.

Sarah doesn't know she's Evolved, not yet — as far as abilities go, hers is fairly innocuous. She sustains herself by drawing on the emotions of those around her, using them to energize her body and mind. It doesn't matter if these emotions are of a positive or negative nature, she absorbs them the same way a sponge absorbs water. Just as she can suck the happiness right out of a person, so too can she drain them of their anger, their fear or their sorrow, though she does not take on these emotional attributes herself — she simply becomes intensely aware of them and uses the energy like a car uses fuel. If separated from other people for long stretches of time, she becomes lethargic and weak, eventually losing the will to do anything except sleep. Prolonged lack of exposure won't necessarily kill her, but it will turn her into vegetable.
