Born in 1975 in the Upper West Side of NYC, Daniel Jacob Sawyer was raised in a healthy family unit. His father was an influential stock broker, his mother a stay at home mom. As their only son, he was a bit spoiled. His grandfather, a veteran of World War II, was over their home often and told him about his time in the war.
Daniel was home schooled until he entered a classy prep school at 15. He was bright, but did not quite apply himself as much as he could. Regardless, he passed with good marks. He played several sports, including basketball. On pressure from his father, he went to college immediately after graduating. However, he decided not to follow a purely intellectual career and began to study criminal justice with the intention of joining the FBI.
With an actual goal in mind, he studied harder. He declined to continue with his sports in order to focus on his studies. In his sophomore year, he met his future wife Nadina. They helped each other keep their focus on each other and their studies, instead of being distracted by the frivolities of college life. They got married in their senior year.
Not long after his graduation, the September 11th attacks happened. Motivated to help his country, he enlisted in the army despite the protests of wife. He served a four year tour of duty in Iraq, where he was shot and wounded in the leg when his unit came under fire. Despite his injuries, he was able to rescue his entire unit without the loss of a single soldier. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, and after recovering from his injury, was allowed to retire from the army at the rank of Corporal.
After returning home, he applied for the FBI and easily passed the entrance exams and physical fitness tests. He was assigned to the New York field office to assist with local Law Enforcement in federal cases. In late 2006, he began to discover that he knew things he didn't when using things - an old guitar, FBI vehicles, etc. He didn't have long to figure it out before tragedy struck NYC again.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the field office was hard at work trying to keep things from going worse than they already were. For Daniel, it was a time of confusion and learning all in one. He now knew how to explain his ability, but he wasn't sure where he stood on the matter of evolved individuals. After some time of self reflection, word began to trickle down from Homeland Security and other channels that certain evolved individuals were being taken in, and others forced to register.
At the first opportunity, Daniel registered. Most of his coworkers at the NYC field office give him the odd look now and then, but for the most part hide any ill feelings. After all, he's a good agent, right? One afternoon changed his motivations for the foreseeable future. Word trickled down from the home office in Washington that a twelve year old was taken in and died during interrogation. Apparently his ability required him to have water every so often and his interrogators would not give him any.
From then on, Daniel has attempted to help evolved individuals that would rather live "under the radar" do so by covering up data, finding them shelter, and any other means he can. Despite the knowledge that he walks a thin line, he will not hesitate to turn in any individual that he feels is truly unhinged enough to not be monitored.
Recently, a chain of events has taken Daniel's life in a completely different direction. Suffering an unexplainable (to his superiors in the Bureau) back injury, he was out of commission for months, recuperating at the hospital and later at home. His lack of work and an already straining relationship with his wife over his Evolved status led to a bitter divorce.
When he returned to the Bureau following his medical leave, his superiors sat him behind a desk and denied his requests to return to the field. Barely a month went by for Daniel broke down and determined to inform his superiors how his injury happened in hopes they would see his reasoning and put him back in the field. His reason: protecting an Evolved remain nameless and unregistered. Their response: termination.
Now surviving on his savings, out of work and frustrated, Daniel Sawyer is a man with many options open to him that can't properly see any of them.
