Scene Title I'm Richard Fucking Cardinal!
Synopsis Elle makes her way into a phony meeting; what starts with the electrokinetic nearly rabbiting, ends with Elle walking away from her meeting with Endgame members with a lot of food for thought.
Date August 23, 2010

Dilapidated Warehouse

Cardinal's thumb rolls down the contacts list of his phone, tapping twice on one particular one - labeled 'Bishop, E', right before 'Bishop, R' - and brings it up to his ear as he heads towards the exit stairs, "…hopefully she's not with that mass murderer boyfriend of hers."

After a long moment, the phone clicks, and Elle's voice, quiet, can be heard on the other line. "Cardinal. What?" Rustling paper can be heard on the other end of the line.

"Hey, Elle." A casual greeting from Cardinal, "I recently laid my hands on some… information that I thought you might be interested in. Some old files from an abandoned Company facility - looks here like Bob signed off on these, so I figured you might want to take a look…"

There's silence for a moment. Then, "What kind of files? What information?" She grunts on the other end, silence sounding in the background now.

"Let's just say that it's the type of information I don't want to be talking about over an unencrypted line, if you catch my meaning," Cardinal replies in wry tones, "Do you want to take them off my hands, or should I call Denton or Sawyer or somebody?"

A brief moment of silence follows. Then, he gets the hook he's seeking. "No. Where do you want to meet?"

"You sound like you've had about as good a day as I have…" A little bit of sympathy there from Cardinal, "…alright, there's a place down in what's left of Greenwich Village that I use occasionally for drops, an old garage, you can meet me there. I want to get this shit out've my hands before they send someone nasty after it." Directions follow.

In an aside to Jaiden while they wait, Liz snorts and comments mildly, "He slept all day. Not a rough one for him."

Jaiden chuckles, settling into the seat of the vehicle they're using to get from A to B. "This should be fun."

After another moment, Elle sighs into the phone. "Yeah…shit's pretty crazy right now. I'll meet you there." Once an address is obtained, Elle clicks her phone shut.

One the phone's hung up, Cardinal rolls his eyes as he looks over to the peanut gallery. "I always sleep during the day. I'm nocturnal." Hmf.

It's not long before the car's parked safely beside the old abandoned garage, and the hit team members of Endgame are lounging around the garage to wait, with a large file box in the middle of the concrete floor. Of course, it's really full of uncapped water bottles, but why quibble? Cardinal's seated on the edge of an old tool bench, glancing at his watch as he waits for Elle to arrive.

Elisabeth simply wrinkles her nose at him and chuckles. "Uh-huh." With a roll of her blue eyes, she simply sits in the car and drinks her water — she's drinking a lot of water today. It's helping her headache finally, though! She glances at Cardinal and comments, "By the way. April Silver is exactly who I thought she might be. Her guy asked me to help him find her today."

Once they're at the garage, Elisabeth is restless. She paces a little as they wait, sticking near the bay doors. One hand absently checks the position of the pistol in the front of her waistband, making sure it's there though she can feel the weight easily enough, and then she takes her hand away.

Jaiden is sitting out of sight as best he can, by the door in a corner, a bottle of water sitting very near, taking a sip every now and again. He was briefed on what to expect on the way over - her powers, mainly, and the fact that Elle's completely batshit crazy, but crazy he can deal with.

The Company car that Elle is currently in possession of pulls up, parallel parking on the side of the corner. She pauses, frowning up at the old abandoned warehouse; her hand feels inside of her purse, for a moment, before she slings it over her shoulder. Then, Elle Bishop steps out of her vehicle, adjusting the grey skirt she wears along with a similarly colored tank top, with her hair up in a bun. Heels click on the pavement as she makes her way unknowingly toward the ambush, a frown on her face.

First, she looks at the filing box. Then, to Cardinal. Then, to Elisabeth. One hand raises, held close to her chest in a 'claw' shape as she steps in further, casting a suspicious look around. "Cardinal," she greets, glancing toward Elisabeth. "Elisabeth," Then, she's looking back to Cardinal. "Wasn't aware that giving me files required two people…" She still doesn't notice Jaiden yet. At least there's no sparking yet

"Hey, Elle." Cardinal's hands drop down to the edges of the tool bench, and he pushes himself off it to land on his feet with a bit of a scuff of shoes on concrete, brushing a bit of dust off his denim-clad backside and offering over a tired smile to her, "Come on in… and nah, not really, but I wanted to talk. Lizzie said you two got along, so, figured it'd be easier with a friendly face, all that."

A lift of his hands, as if to show that there's no guns there, and then they drop down to his sides, "There aren't actually any files, though. Sorry."

Elisabeth stops pacing and stays far enough back not to be a threat to Elle's personal space. "Hey, Elle," she greets the other blonde. "How've you been?" Her tone is casual, but she's watchful in the same way that Elle herself is. She doesn't seem to be out to start a problem.]

The door is left open, the Blonde still not seeing Jaiden yet. She's looking like a cornered animal right now, her back pressed against the wall as she seems to debate on bolting. She's heard enough about Cardinal, after all, to know that he has Harper, a man of little fears, being scared for her, and Warren hates him. "What did you want to talk about?" She seems to be ever-so-slowly edging toward the door to leave again, a wary look on her face.

The cool thing about Jaiden's power? Personal space and being close really don't come into play that often when you have a range of power like he does. As Cardinal speaks, Jaiden stands, pushing his hat back with a thumb, waiting for Elle's inevitable move. And when she does move toward the door, Jaiden makes himself known. Not by speaking or being threatening….simply by moving into view.

"You've put me in kind've a bad position here," Cardinal says with a shake of his head, one hand sliding to rub against the nape of his neck as he offers her a sheepish sort of smile - whether or not it reaches his eyes, well, he's wearing shades. "See, you and your little boyfriend have been causing trouble on territory under our protection. You stepped on our toes yesterday, and Warren openly stated his intention to take what's ours away, and lay claim to a member of my organization."
"Running's just going to make it turn into more than a talk, Elle. And for whatever my word is worth to you, talk is all we have in mind," Elisabeth says quietly. "We just want to know what the hell the Company's interest in our people is."

At first, it seems like Jaiden just showing himself was the last advisable thing to do. The electrokinetic jerks back, moving so she's halfway out the door, with a look on her face that says she really doesn't like this situation, and really doesn't care to be in it. Elisabeth's well-timed words, however, bring her to a halt, halfway hiding behind the door. One blue eye is visible behind the door, turning toward Cardinal as he speaks.

After a moment, she edges in just a bit more, though she's still got one foot hanging out of the door. "See…I wasn't aware that was your territory. And he's not my boyfriend. That fucker is insane, an enabler, and I'm really wishing I hadn't agreed to…" She cuts herself off, pursing her lips and scowling at Cardinal. "Warren was investigating one of his alarms going off. Devi pulled a gun.

"While I don't particularly care if Warren lives or dies, other people do care, and it's my job to keep an eye on him." She doesn't sound too thrilled by this revelation. "As for the Company's interest…hah, I wish I could tell you." She sounds…bitter as she mentions the Company, her eyes narrowing a little.

"Why don't we wait and hear what the nice man has to say, Miss?" Jaiden smiles from beneath the brim of his hat, leaning against the wall very near the doorway, one hand free, the other hooked in his pocket, the water bottle he had been drinking dangling from two fingers, the liquid inside sloshing like a living thing. "Perhaps you could tell us, and no-one would be the wiser."

"I wouldn't be so sure to assume it's the Company's interests that matter here," Cardinal points out quietly, regarding Elle for a long moment, "And you're not doing a very good job keeping an eye on him if he's causing so much fucking trouble, Elle. See, the problem is…" His hands spread helplessly, "If I tell you to back off? I'm pretty sure you will. You know what the score is, and you're not stupid. If I tell Warren to back off, or he finds out that Devi's connected to me? He'll just fuck with her more, or kill her, or try and use her as a hostage or something. Not to mention the fact that if she ends up in Institute hands, I am going to be a very, very unhappy guy."

Those hands fall to his sides, and he takes another step forward, brows raising a bit, "So let's put the cards on the table. Do you think you can get Warren to get the fuck away from the Ravens, and Devi, without telling him why? Spin it as an order from higher-ups, or jealousy, or what-the-fuck ever, I don't care. The alternative's a bullet in his head. You pick."

Elisabeth is keeping in plain sight and making zero moves that are threatening. She in fact sighs softly, waiting for Elle's answer before she makes another movement at all. She's watching Elle's reactions carefully to see if the electricity manipulator is lying out her ass.

For a long moment, Elle remains behind her door, peering out from behind it with one blue eye as she watches Cardinal. She's quiet again, after he finishes…then, she steps in, slowly sliding the door shut behind herself, though she's staying nice and close to the door, though her heartrate is saying that she'd rather be making a mad dash to her car right now. Blue eyes flicker, between Jaiden and Elisabeth, then back to Cardinal's sunglasses. Certainly, she'd love to see Warren get a bullet in his head. He's getting a little out of hand for even her tastes. But she doubts the ones that she's really trying to impress, Harper and Broome, would very much like that option.

\After what seems like forever, she finally speaks again, her eyes on Cardinal. "I'll get him off of Devi's case for you, in any way I can." She frowns quietly, glancing about once more. "I may need Devi's help to do it, though, and bit of acting to go along with it, if my initial plan doesn't work." She stares at Cardinal.

"And I want answer about you. Who are you, Richard Cardinal? Warren hates your guts and laments his lack of having killed you every time your name is brought up. Also, he offers up many creative solutions to killing you." She glances to Elisabeth briefly, before looking back to the man. "And then, when I mention your name to my superiors, they flinch like you're some creature from the deep who is gonna kill them all. Why?"

Jaiden chuckles softly, taking a swig of the bubbling water, stepping away from the closed door, remaining equidistant from the file box in the middle of the room and Elle. "Sounds like you've got a fan or five, Cardinal. What kind of outfit you running here?"

A quiet chuckle tumbles past Cardinal's lips at the question about who he is, his hand raising up to push his shades more fully up on his face and raking back from there through dark hair, the death of that sound of humor leaving a smirk just-lingering upon his lips. "Do they? That's almost flattering, actually," he murmurs, head lifting just enough then to fix her with a look over the edge of his shades, dark eyes meeting hers steadily. "Who am I?"

"I'm Richard fucking Cardinal, that's who I am."

Those shades are pushed back up again, and he straightens up, "And you're standing on the wrong side of the chessboard from me. I'll do to your superiors what I did to Arthur Petrelli, and they know it. I will not deal with this sort of shit a second time."

A small smile forms over Elle's features, though she's still quite thoroughly terrified of the sunglasses-wearing man, meeting his eyes as best she can. An attempt to establish that she's not scared of him, even if she really is. She seems about to say something, before he straightens…and says that name. Then, Elle's eyes are widening. "Wait, you…"

Suddenly, she's pointing at Cardinal, much less terrified and much more awed. "Are you the one who killed Arthur Petrelli?" She's still leaning against that door, but she's ever so slowly drawing away from it, almost as if magnetically attracted to Cardinal.

There's always the question on whether Fucking is a given name or one that Richard chose for himself. One would think parents saddling their child with the middle name 'Fucking' are either amazing in their own right, sadistic, or know something that the world has to be told. Of course, Jaiden knows none of this. To his credit, the Australian does not burst out laughing, or snicker, or even give an eye roll that may be noticed to maintain the allure that Cardinal is trying to build. Must…keep…straight….face. He hides it rather well, drinking from his water bottle again.

When Elle moves, Jaiden remains where he is. Observant folk may notice the air gets quite a bit more humid almost instantly.

It is only with the greatest of effort that Elisabeth manages not to roll her eyes or facepalm. "Oh, for God's sake," she breathes under her breath. Her arms cross and one hand comes up to cover her mouth lest any hint of her exasperation comes through. She's so going to slap him later.

Her voice raises in volume, she can tell that Elle is absolutely terrified. "He is," she informs the blonde. "They're afraid of us, Elle, because we know what they're doing to people who don't deserve it. Much like Pinehearst did to innocents, much like the Company did to innocent kids, they are hauling people in off the street using the Registry as a shopping list and running medical experiments on them. And we aren't fucking around with them and we aren't putting up with it. We didn't stop Pinehearst and the Company just to let the fucking Institute take over."

"I didn't do it alone, far from it," Cardinal admits with a tight shake of his head, "I can't take the credit for tearing Pinehearst down, not solely, but I did kill the sonuvabitch personally." He gestures to Elisabeth as she speaks, and then adds, "They know we have the inclination and the ability to tear them down. And we will."

Elle is far too busy staring at both Elisabeth and Cardinal as they speak to notice the fact that the room has gotten human, though she suddenly wants to be here even less. And her heartrate suggests that she's…relieved? The electric blonde turns, peering at Elisabeth for a long moment, her jaw muscles clenching and unclenching. Then, she's looking to Cardinal.

And suddenly, there is a genuine smile on her face, and she offers a relieved-sounding laugh. "You…man, you don't even know how much of a hero you are to me, just for the fact that you're the one who snuffed that fucker's life out." She breathes for a moment, before that pretty little face of hers suddenly falls into an almost tortured expression. She falls silent, staring silently at the ground.

This is no act, something is really bothering her, but she is loathe to bring such things out in the presence of people who are supposed to be her enemies. They don't really feel like enemies right now, when they say such pretty words.

Jaiden glances to Elisabeth, then to Cardinal, giving Elle a wide berth. He's dated women like her before - the smartest thing to do is just don't make sudden moves and then either run like hell or see what they do first. "So then…since Cardinal there did you such a big favor, maybe you can see about telling us what we'd like to know?"

She could be lying. It would be easy. But Elisabeth doesn't honestly think that the other blonde is that good an actress frankly. Since it seems that there's a hero worship thing going on for Cardinal, Liz simply smiles faintly. "Elle," she says quietly. "Look, I don't know what you've gotten yourself into, but I have to tell you…. you're in really deep it seems like. Talk to us. Tell us what's happening. Because if we can't stop all this shit, all those horrible things that people saw happening in those visions? It's going to happen." She's not honestly sure it can be stopped anyway. "I don't want any more people like Arthur in charge of things. I don't want any more kids tortured with medical experiments. And I don't want to watch this city explode." Mental note two to self: Inform Cardinal that she will share with many woman, but Elle is not one of them.

Cardinal scratches his fingers against the nape of his neck almost-sheepishly as he's called someone's hero - he really wasn't expecting to hear that one in the context of this conversation. "Yeah, well, Arthur didn't make a whole lot of friends in his time, kind've the complete opposite there," he points out wryly, "And like I said, I can't take one-hundred-percent credit myself. I'm just the guy that finished him off."

That hand falls, and he gives his head a tight shake, "I don't know the details, Elle, but what I've heard says you weren't exactly treated well either. Some've the people that I've talked to felt sorry for the shit you went through, and they weren't even involved. So why're you working for people who still do that sort've shit?"

Elle Bishop is good at putting on a happy, disarming smile when she's feeling not so happy. Or feeling like ripping off faces, depending on the situation. As Elisabeth speaks, the little blonde slowly lowers herself down, sitting on the concrete floor with her knees drawn up to her chest. She's normally extremely tiny, but right now, with a shrinking posture, Elle looks positively miniscule, even vulnerable. As Cardinal speaks, she only shrinks even more, hugging her knees quietly.'

Her voice comes in soft tones, which would be barely audible if it it weren't for the silence of the empty building. "I'm in over my head, I think…and I don't know how to get out." Her brow furrows, and pale blue eyes raise up to each of the other's faces in turn. "I— I don't know why I'm doing this. It's…it's what I know? It all seems so glamorous, compared to what I'm used to. They at least act nice to my face, and they go out of their way to make me feel appreciated…" Her gaze sweeps back down to the ground.

"But I have a feeling that if I make one wrong move…I'm going to be one of those people they put in one of those coffins." She sighs quietly, closing her eyes.

Jaiden glances to Cardinal, remaining where he is. He was warned she was psychotic, and this could all be an act, each action specifically put forth to elicit a response from the viewer, honed over years of practicing. How to be innocent in three easy steps before burning your enemies to cinders or your money back! "I'd probably have the same result if they found me. My power's a little too versatile and dangerous to keep me out in the real world." Jaiden crouches near the door, still watching Elle carefully, hands clasped in front of him, peering out from beneath the brim of his hat. "I register and I either join up or get disappeared. Just like you."

There's a slant of a glance toward Cardinal from Elisabeth, a minuscule shake of her head. So far as she can tell, the woman's not faking it. But that's based on limited experience of Elle, too. Her story's plausible, at least. "Elle," Liz finally says quietly. "You were in the 2019 for, as near as I could gather, a month. Clearly it was a different future than the the one that's coming, because… none of what's gone on since you came back happened in that future." Elisabeth knows that much. We've already thwarted a number of things in that timeline. She shrugs a little. "I can't blame you for not trusting anyone. Hell, I dunno if I'd trust any of us either," she says candidly. "We could just as easily be lying to you as they are. But… we're not. You saw what became of you for working with the Company; when you came back, you had every chance to burn the people who helped you. You didn't. And we have no reason to lie to you now. The question is… what the hell do you want to do with it?"

Cardinal looks to Jaiden, then he looks to Elisabeth, before he looks back down to the young woman settled down on the garage floor in silence for a moment. He steps away from the table, then, walking slowly over to approach her, stopping right in front of her.

"You can go on working for them," he says quietly, "Doing their dirty work, babysitting crazy bastards like Warren, hunting down people just like you to be hurt and locked away, Elle. You can walk out've here, we won't stop you. We're not them - we don't kill people that we don't need to."

"Or," he says, "You can figure out what you want for once in your life. You can stand with people who maybe won't say what you want, who maybe won't give you all the money and luxuries you can enjoy, but who'll be honest with you. Maybe we'll win. Maybe you'll end up in a coffin, or killed. But at least you'll be free — and if your bosses are really that scared of me, it should tell you something about their chances."

He offers a hand up, "It's your choice."

The woman hardly looks at Jaiden as he speaks, still staring at the ground with a horribly unhappy look on her face. After a moment, she looks up to the man. "You're not just like me. Not at all like me. I'm damaged goods. My mom was killed by Arthur Petrelli when I was a child, and my father promptly had her completely erased from my memory, and then proceeded to tell me that she was nothing but a bum mother who had run out on us when I was too young to remember her. I just found out that my birthday has been a lie for lord knows how long. Instead of June 13th, I was actually born on September 17th. When I was six, I set my grandma's house on fire. For what I thought was my ninth birthday, I was in a glass room with an IV of Lithium in my arm. When I was a kid, my own father lead charges of electrical voltage at levels that the human body was never meant to withstand, even with my ability. God only knows how many other lies there are." She frowns to Jaiden, trying to look dangerous and confrontational. It turns out more as a really pathetic face that looks more like she's on the verge of tears.

Then, she glances to Cardinal and Elisabeth, hugging her legs. Her head inclines toward the other blonde, that sad expression not leaving her face, nodding slowly. "I…I had no reason to burn anyone. Everyone was so nice to me. I had no reason to do anything to sabotage anyone…" Especially when they treated her, the supposed enemy, with such kindness.

It's Cardinal who gets Elle Bishop's attention, however, her eyes searching his sunglassed face as he approaches and stops in front of her, her brow furrowed. The part of her that is still loyal to the Institute is screaming 'LA LA LA NOT LISTENING', but that's being drowned out by the simple reasoning in his words. She keeps her silence for a long moment, her blue eyes set upon Cardinal's hand as it is offered. For a moment, she glances between the door and the man's hand, frowning, debating.

Those words are so pretty. Music to her ears, really, after so long with the Company and then her adventures with the Institute. Honesty…that's something new. Any more these days, she almost expects every person she speaks to to be decieving her in some way, shape or form. Blue eyes slowly travel up Cardinal's arm, to his face, pausing there with a thoughtful gleam to them.

Tentatively, as if she's worried that there's another motive to his offered hand, or if he's going to attack her for daring to touch him, Elle reaches out, slowly taking the man's hand. Once certain he's not going to bite her or something, she slowly raises to her feet, glancing between the three in silence.

"Yep, I'm not like you at all." The Australian remains seemingly unmoved by the enormous info dump that just happened in the middle of a deserted garage. "Unlike you, I had choice in my life, and now, you're being given one. Decision time, girlie-girl. This choice is a big one. You can choose to ignore it utterly and go about your life as is, wondering if whatever you do is something that'll have you erased, or you can pick the harder road - and no blowing smoke up your bum, missy, it's harder - and do something to prevent the shite that might happen sometime in the future. You're working for the blokes who cause this stuff. Be part of the solution."

Jaiden stands from his crouching position, looking to cardinal, looking to Elisabeth, then training his attention on Elle finally, coming a little closer. "If there's one thing about politicians and operatives…nice to your face means hiding other motives. You're a tool to them. You wouldn't have been tested in the way you were otherwise. They would have given you what you needed, not shaped you into what they wanted you to be."

Jaiden smiles. "Take it back, Elle. Give 'em the fig and kick 'em square in the boot."
Long distance to Elisabeth: Jaiden does something anyway.

Elisabeth remains where she is, letting Elle make her own choice as the men talk to her. Because no matter what the woman chooses, there's no forcing her. They don't particularly have leverage. When the other blonde takes Cardinal's hand and stands up, her crystal blue eyes are intent. Cautious but she doesn't look like she's about to spring. And when Elle's up on her feet, Liz smiles faintly. "We had a choice too — keep treating you like an enemy and keep an enemy. Or treat you as a person, let you see who we were, what we stood for, and decide for yourself if it was worth keeping our secrets," she says quietly. "Norton believed in you, and I trusted him enough to give you the rope to hang yourself, Elle. And you've proven him right." She shrugs slightly. "I know you don't know for sure why they want Devi, but … you have to have some clue why Warren's got a hard-on to go recruit her. Hell, you see a lot. Why did they want Warren to start with? Or Knutson for that matter?"

"Give it some thought." The offer's more of insistence, really, since Cardinal doesn't expect her to change her entire life based on a brief conversation in the middle of a garage she was led to on false pretenses. As she takes his hand, he helps her up to her feet, a smile crooking up a bit at one corner of his lips, "Take a look at how we've treated you - tonight, and other times - and compare it to how they're treating you, and figure out where you want to stand."

He gives his head a little bit of a shake, glancing over to Elisabeth, "I know why Warren wants Devi. I don't think the Institute does, or they'd snatch her up…" A look back to Elle, then, and he lets her hand drop, "Just think it over and make a decision yourself for once, Elle."

Elle looks silently between the trio as they each speak encouraging words to her in turn. Her face is almost expressionless now, though it doesn't hide the emotions rolling around behind those pale blue eyes of hers, buffeting at her senses far more than the words of those present ever could. Once Cardinal lets her hand drop, she takes a small step back, her eyes turning down to the ground.

"The Institute doesn't even know Devi exists. We went to the warehouse following Warren's little tracking device. He threatened to detonate the spider-o-death. She pulled a gun. I zapped her. And then it somehow came out that she has the same ability as him." She glances between Cardinal and Elisabeth. "He wants her because of what she can do. Normally, he watches people for a good year before trying to recruit them." She frowns at the mention of Odessa, and shakes her head. "Fuck if I know, with Odessa."

Finally, she turns toward Cardinal, taking another step away from him. She glances down to her hand, then back up to Cardinal, a frown playing over her features. "I…" She halts, glancing toward the door for a moment, then back to Cardinal. "…I'll think about it." She looks back down to the dirty ground of the deserted garage.

Then, a much more steady look is cast up toward Cardinal. "I'll keep in touch."

Devi? Odessa? Names Jaiden doesn't know. "Take care of yourself, Elle. Spend some time on yourself."

Silence comes from the audiokinetic, though she nods toward Elle at the information that the other woman would be in touch. It is only after the door closes behind her that Elisabeth looks at Cardinal and slaps a silence field around the three remaining people, saying flatly, "I don't often tell you what to do. Do not fuck her."

Cardinal's gaze follows the electrokinetic as she departs, and once the door closes, he looks back to Elisabeth - an eyebrow tic'ing upwards in bemused surprise. "I wasn't exactly planning on it, Liz…" His head swings in a slow shake, "I don't know if we can trust her, but I'm willing to give her the chance to prove it. Everyone deserves a second chance."

He clears his throat, then, arms folding over his chest as he assumes a pompous posture. "Alright. I know you've both been waiting to laugh about the 'Richard Fucking Cardinal' line. You can let it out now."

And as the laughter rises, muffled by the buffering field of Elisabeth Harrison, a day of threats and intimidation becomes one of hope.

A pawn on a board that doesn't exist moves forward to threaten another, over-reaching, and the other side moves to claim it.

As one of Elle's superiors properly named it, en passant.

Your move, Doctor Broome.
