Character History:

Growing Up

Kailin Knight was raised on the outside looking in from childhood. The black foster child of a white family, he was raised in a culture he did not belong and in many cases did not accept him. No one wanted him. He was too white for the black kids. He was too black for the white kids. That is, his mannerisms and speech patterns made him a butt of jokes for children of color because he was unfamiliar with the style and slang of his minority classmates while he was visibly secluded from his Caucasian classmates by his skin color, assuming him to be more compatible with the minorities. This left him isolated and alone. So he did the only thing he could. He watched. He sat on the sidelines and watched life go by, learning from all the people he despised that people were exactly what they did not want to be. Alone. Each in his own way were trapped, chained to the existences they had built for themselves, constrained by society’s rules. Fear of humiliation, fear of rejection. These were prisons that could not be seen from the inside looking out, only by a careful examination from the loneliness outside society could he see the gossamer strands that held people together, wrapping lovingly around their necks ready to choke the life out of them if they moved too much in the wrong direction. Once this realization had been reached, he began to withdraw even further.

Taking Control

Kailin became a rather stoic teenager, never standing out in any particular area. He was entrenched in mediocrity, not standing out in sports or arts or academics as a child. There was always an athlete better than him, an artist more talented, or a student that was smarter. Though he was always told that had an amazing will to do his best, there was never anything that came of it. Councilors told him that he had amazing potential, but no one was able to focus it. The society that he had withdrawn from included mentors, teachers, coaches and even his parents. Everyone told him he had great potential, endlessly he had to hear it from people and it wore on him to have to listen to people drone on about it. Despite everything they said he was never really anything more than average – and no one around him could give him the courtesy of just being honest with him and telling him that. They lied, but to what end? Inevitable disappointment? He could have cared less what they thought about his potential, but the ceaseless lectures were more than he could take. So, he took action. He joined society. He joined ‘them’. He stepped inside that box, unbound by the fears that constrained them all. He worked out and built his body, dedicating himself as any scholar would to his study. Physical attraction was a key element of society. He learned all the social and fashion trends, far easier than any physics lesson. Being accepted meant accepting them. He took everyone’s culture and created a life, just for them. Black slang, white enunciation. He found every person’s ‘thing’ – that which made them special and took it as his own as he met them, reflecting everything they were. He became everything that everyone wanted him to be and despite hating every minute of their petty, superficial world, their ignorance was a worthwhile award.

Kailin got into college just fine, in fact he got into several of them. His grades were good and his parents had long saved enough for his college fund to pay for an undergraduate degree and even most of a graduate degree. Relaxed – The most prominent part of Kailin’s personality is that he always seems relaxed. At almost any time he seems to be happy and content wherever he is coming across in a manner that lacks any sort of nervousness or apprehension. This comes with being back in his native country and finally resolving personal issues of duty and responsibility.

Ambitious – Kailin has always been competitive. When he was younger it was a trait bred from a constant involvement in sports. Now that he is older he finds that he enjoys competition of a more mature nature. He wants what he wants when he wants it.

Confident – There is a quiet confidence around Kailin that comes from knowing that he’s been well-trained to deal with multiple types of situations. While he doesn't allow himself the luxury of making mistakes, he does take comfort in the fact that they teach good lessons if he pays enough attention.

Kailin normally likes to dress to the nines, taking great care in his appearance. Even in jeans in a jacket he is styled immaculately, but on occassion he's been known to go very casual and sometimes even get a little dirty.

The Loft

Kailin has a remodeled condo in Chelsea that looks out over the city scape of Manhattan. It is a fairly small apartment for a unit that was originally bigger before the redesign. A sleek modern design typifies the arrangement of the condo's layout. Set on a background of bright white walls, the soft surfaces of the living room furniture are colored in monotone shades of white, black and grey while the hard surfaces are a deep, solid mahogany set on chrome that matches the appliances of the kitchenette. A similarly themed dining table sits near the corner of the condo adjacent to a small balcony. The bedroom has a design all its own with ice blue lighting giving a chill illumination to a beige and white color scheme. Next to the bed is a walk in closet, a large space designed specifically for Kailin's assortment of expensive suits and accessories.

The Armoire

The Armoire appears to be quite compact and seems like it should be bigger. That is because hidden inside The Armoire is The Armory, a collection of weapons kept by Kailin for his personal use.

The walk in closet has just as much thought and design put into it as the rest of the condo - probably more. Referred to as 'The Armoire', Kailin keeps a large collection of expensive suits of many colors and varieties. Solids and pinstripes, brown and beiges, blacks and blues… The assortment of suits is almost as varied as the assortment of labels. Represented in the collection of over a hundred suits are more recognizable makers like Armani and Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label, but most of the tailoring comes from personalized designers from Europe such as Kiton, Brioni, and Caraceni, and New York crafters Fioravanti, and Vacca. Most of the suits are exquisitely made bespoke ensembles cut from wool, cashmere, silk, vicuna, but even a pair of escorial suits hang in the collection. Alongside the main focus of The Armoire, accessories line the different sections for easy access. Ties, dress shirts, and a large but uniform collection of black dress shoes each have their own designated section. A fan of the stingy brim hat, Kailin has a collection of stylish pieces on hooks for easy access lining all the way around The Armoire. In a smaller section, Kailin’s jewelry is kept in a glass display case. Consisting only of platinum and diamonds his stud earrings, bracelets, watches, tie clips, and cufflinks are each aligned on a different shelf according to their make. Despite everything contained within, The Armoire appears to be quite compact and seems like it should be bigger.
