Scene Title L'Être et le néant
Synopsis Magnes seeks transcendent truth.
Date December 24, 2018

If I die in this world

Who will know something of me?

The wasteland is scorched Earth, but for the first time in a long time, there's hope for the survivors, hope for the people who fought so hard to free society from the oppression of the machines. Magnes was with the others just long enough for them to celebrate, long enough to appreciate what the outsiders helped them achieve, but he was gone just as quickly.

I am lost, no one knows

(But I must carry on)

There's no trace of my yearning

He now finds himself standing in the middle of New York, he's not even entirely sure where. He's not supposed to travel out alone, but the overlays, his visions, have led him to this. He smells the dry air, long decayed death. He can't see the auroras above him.

If I die in this world

(Nothing worse can befall)

Who will know something of me?

"All of us have a purpose. The Old One, the Traveler, the Detective. We survive, we overcome, and sometimes we fall, like The Lieutenant." Magnes says all of this seemingly to no one, hand gripping his walking stick, hood pulled over his head.

I am lost, no one knows

(All my fears, all my tears)

There's no trace of my yearning

(Tell my heart there's a hole)

"Eve has always followed her visions. I wrote my bible, I spread what I knew to the others, and now I have to follow what I've learned, what the Old One taught us." Magnes drops his walking stick, then reaches out, gripping at apparently nothing.

I wear a void

Not even hope

"There's nothing for me to do any longer." Magnes says, as if answering a question, and then pulls at the air, which causes space to stretch and distort. He walks towards it, pulling even more. Unlike the Magni of other worlds, this one's fine control is something refined, something of great nuance.

A downward slope

Is all I see

"I no longer truly feel the things that the others feel. All I feel is the Void, and the pursuit of that deeper knowledge, the pursuit of balance between all things, the pursuit of oneness and wholeness." Magnes continues to step forward, the distorted space now entirely surrounding him.

I wear a void

(As long as breath comes from my mouth)

Not even hope

(I may yet stand the slightest chance)

If he could see, he would see the world becoming increasingly distorted and unrecognizable, he'd see that the space around him has bent to the point that it might seem like some confusing anomaly in space to the outside observer. "I want them to be happy, and they will be happy, in this world and others. Quinn, Elaine, Elisabeth, Cardinal, Abby, Ruia, Simon, Xiulan, Eileen, Delilah… so many people in so many worlds, so much that I've seen, too much to name, too much to remember."

A downward slope

(A shaft of light is all I need)

"In every world, we're loved." Magnes walks through the increasingly distorted space until all that surrounds him are ridiculously stretched out streaks of various colors and lights. "But I have to know, I have to know for sure…"

Is all I see

(To cease the darkness killing me)

"Who are you?"

If that's the end of his sentence, or a new question, it's unclear. But once space snaps back into its natural, unbent state, all that's left behind is a walking stick.
