Synopsis | Kendall was forced to abandon his video games in the wake of the riots and the escape from Gun Hill, so he decided to sneak in and retrieve them, among other things. |
Date | November 22, 2010 |
Gun Hill is named after Gun Hill Road, the street that the five story tenement resides on. A bright red brick exterior separates it from the surrounding buildings, making it difficult to miss even though the complexes on either side of it are similarly coloured with fresh coats of paint in yellow and blue donated to their proprietors by an urban renewal project devoted to eliminating graffiti from the Bronx's residential zones in an attempt to raise property value and reestablish the borough as a desirable place to live.
Inside, the building shows more obvious signs of wear than the rusty fire escape affixed to its front, including old hardwood floors so scuffed that no amount of wax or polish can return them to their original luster, and faded wallpaper in neutral shades of cream with a strange mottled texture. Instead of an elevator, the tenement's upper floors can be reached by taking a stairwell with numbered flights and roof access via a heavy metal door that sticks more often than not.
Gun Hill is mostly abandoned, all of its residents fled in the wake of November 8th. Personal belongings lay where they were left, some pillaged by looters, but mostly intact.
A door swings open slowly, as if pushed by the wind, and is left ajar. There isn't anything else happening, until a stair creaks, going upward. Another door opens, and then there is a key turning in a lock, a door swinging open. Once in Kaylee's apartment, Kendall, dressed in a concealing hoodie and baseball hat and carrying a couple large bags, pulls off his ring he uses to activate his illusion of being invisible and looks around furtively. When no one leaps out of the shadows to arrest him, he moves through the apartment and to an inconspicuous wall. He reaches his hand out to it, touches it, and then his hand passes through. As he does so, the wall disappears, revealing a flatscreen TV and several game consoles. He breathes a sigh of relief. They're still there!
Sparing an apologetic glance at the TV, which is too big to carry, he starts carefully packing up the game systems, quickly coiling the cords and stashing them away as well. The last things grabbed are his games, which are unceremoniously dumped in the bag since they're already in their protective cases. Then he slings the Guitar Hero guitar around himself, hefts the bags, and then pauses.
Right, he needed to get one last thing. So he heads for Kaylee's room as he was instructed, and heads for the closet. Dubiously, he pries up the floorboards, and just like she said, there's a box there. Grabbing it, he shoves it in the pocket of his hoodie, then turns to leave. He pauses to listen really hard, but no one seemed to have noticed his presence. So he leaves the apartment, locking it behind him with the key Valerie provided him, and then slips the ring back on.
Invisible once more, he moves down the stairs and pauses again at the door, listening again. Then he slowly opens the door all the way, closing it behind him stealthily, then makes his getaway.
Aww, yeah. He's totally a ninja.
Although he does wonder what's in the cigar case… think she'd notice if he peeked? Oh wait….. telepath. Right.
