Red Hook’s proximity to Governor’s Island means there’s a lot of government bars. Establishments where local and federal law enforcement spent a large portion of their downtime mingling and exchanging favors. But the crumbling brick-walled pub a couple blocks down from the Red Hook Market called Grifter’s is nothing of the sort. Here, the atmosphere is thick with cigarette smoke and the windows are dappled with condensation. There’s no air conditioning, poor ventilation, and the clientele are largely dock workers come from the harbor after their shift. It is the scar tissue of so many reconstructions, the creaky joints of an elderly city on its last legs.
