New York is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States and was the nation's third most populous prior to the civil war. Its population has likely dwindled in the aftermath, but an appropriate census has not yet been collected. The state is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island along the east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Ontario to the west and Quebec to the north. New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City.
In the aftermath of the Second American Civil War, New York City fell into abandonment and ruin. In 2015, a small resettlement area designated the New York City Safe Zone was established. It is the only officially resettled area within 25 miles of New York City.
