The Sandy Hook Peninsula extends as a barrier spit off the north end of the Jersey Shore in what was once the Middletown Township prior to the destruction of much of coastal New Jersey during the Second American Civil War. In April of 2020 the United States Coast Guard set up a temporary operations headquarter on the north end of the peninsula at the site of the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 22, primarily consisting of trailers and other portable structures. Construction equipment moved on to the island in June of 2020 preceding a groundbreaking for a new Coast Guard headquarters intended to launch a defensive program against coastal piracy across the New Jersey-New York coastline. However, construction on the base is not scheduled to be completed until 2022.
Presence of the US Coast Guard has caused friction with the local independent settlement of Providence, though no true relationship between the southern, inland community and the US Coast Guard have been formally established.
