The Sunspot Solar Observatory was, on its surface, an astronomical observatory designed for the study of the Sun, located in the Sacramento Mountains in Sunspot, New Mexico approximately 18 miles south of Cloudcroft. The observatory was operated by Company elements within the New Mexico State University and the National Solar Observatory. Access to the telescopes and grounds were open to the public on guided tours.
Secretly, the facility was used to study the impact of solar radiation on SLC-Expressive humans and served as a covert base of operations for the Kill Squad, a black-ops arm of the Company privately run by Arthur Petrelli. In the late 1980s the Kill Squad was moved from Sunspot to the Montauk Point, Fort Hero base in New York and all solar research was shifted to Colobanth-Research-Facility in Antarctica, leaving the facility largely abandoned save for its public front.
