To my Silver-Haired Spirit

“The Master created humans first as the lowest type, most easily formed. Gradually, he replaced them by robots, the next higher step, and finally he created me, to take the place of the last humans.”

Jolene’s voice carries the weight of a sister annoyed by a younger sibling. It crashes through the faraway thoughts that have held Jac captive for the past several minutes, rousing her with a thrilling shock of nervous energy. The sound causes the teen’s chin to slip from the hand that held it up and blue eyes to search for those lost minutes for a frantic second.

“I’m leaving without you if you aren't down in one minute!”

Jac blinks and sits back as the second warning is called out, eyes focusing on the submission still boldly shown on the display. One hand raises to rake through her hair. “Um,” she murmurs, blue eyes slanting to the mostly closed door. Relief trickles when she sees no one is actually about to barge in.

“Wait,” she calls back, twisting to face her computer again. The hand on her head drops to the keyboard and she hastily clears the browser before closing the laptop. In the next motion Jac pushes away from her desk and grabs her hoodie from the back of her chair, then heads out of her bedroom.

“I’m coming!”
