Scene Title Not Alone In This World
Synopsis After having time to calm down, Harrison returns to Summer Meadows.
Date December 08, 2009

Summer Meadows

The low brickwork walls flanking the entrance to this subdivision pronounce it to be 'S MMER ME DOWS', black metal letters pitted by age and each tilted slightly askew by decades of weather and neglect. The rest of the subdivision echoes this theme — pavement cracked, its lines worn and faded nearly into obscurity; small lawns littered with autumn leaves and dying grass, shrubbery poorly pruned or not trimmed back at all, such flowers as there are in most cases long since grown wild. The buildings are a mix of townhouses, duplexes, and quartered apartments, most of them with paint peeling at the edges, a few boarded over and sporting jagged holes where the windows weren't quite protected enough. Feral dogs slink at the back of the streets; their feline counterparts are less commonly seen, usually visible as no more than a streak of motion disappearing into the bushes or someone's cracked-open garage door. This isn't a neighborhood where people are seen lounging on their porches as the sun sinks low in the sky; to stay out as darkness gathers is to risk unwanted attention, and the consequences thereof.

It has been a full 24 hours. There were no cops. No men in black came to take him away. No one attacked him on his way back to Summer Meadows. Harrison slowly makes his way down the sidewalk, his hands stuffed into his jacket as he watches EVERY house and EVERY window he passes. The young man is a bit jumpy and dripping with tension at what he is about to do.

As he makes his way to the same house he went too, he thinks, «She is Jean Grey. Dude she is kind of hot like her yet…she can read my…well then shut the hell up and stop thinking.» Harrison knocks on the door softly.

For once, Kaylee is inside the office near the noon hour, she's taking her break and getting warm. She's bundled up tight in hand me down winter clothes, sipping at a mug of coffee which is gripped possessively in both hands, letting the heat chase away the chill. She hears him first, before the knock even comes, a small smile on her lips. "Come on in Harrison."

Sam behind his desk, gives her an odd look, and to the door with a small frown. "Isn't it that kid you scared off?" Of course the site manager is a Ferryman and knows what she is.

"Yeah it is.. "Kaylee answers softly, before raising her voice again. "Door is unlocked, no need to knock.. Just come on in."

As the young man, opens the door he walks slowly into the office. His eyes fall on Sam first and then Kaylee. He takes a step back away from the pair. He looks towards Kaylee and says softly, "You did not send anyone for me so…I…ahhh damn I don't know why I am here. Curiousity…I have never..well in fact met someone who is kind of like…" His eyes fall on Sam as he does not finish the sentence as he looks back at Kaylee. "Who are you?

Blond brows lift a bit in surprise of that statement, "Why would I send some one after you?" She asks, glancing at Sam behind her, who also shrugs. "I… am…not exactly like Jean Gray." She states, turning back to Harrison, giving him a lop sided smile. "More like Professor X.. but not so strong.. though I have met them." There is a beat of silence as she lets that sink in, "I'm a telepath." She motions over her shoulder at Sam. "And he knows what evolved are.. he works for them. But if you'd rather go else where to talk, I have hedge trimming I'm working on,, you can help with."

Harrison nods slowly as he looks from Sam to Kaylee back to Sam and says, "So that means you can see into my head and most likely know what I can do…so…well you have my attention." He shrugs at the idea of hedges right now and says, "Lead the way."

Setting down the coffee, Kaylee flashes a grin to the man behind the desk, "See ya Sam." climbing to her feet, the telepath leads the way out, holding the door open as she starts to speak, "I can see into your, if I wanted too… You sir… think loudly. It's like having someone yelling in your ear." She waves off that fact as she starts to walk, "So yes.. I know what happens to you in dangerous situations." Her tone is matter of fact, "When I said you have nothing to fear from me, I meant it."

As he runs a hand through his cropped mess, he follows the woman and says, "Sorry?" He is apologizing for having a loud brain. "I will try and turn the volume down…" He shrugs and says, "I have never met someone who was an Evolved…in person that is." He stuffs his hands into his leather coat as the cold air hits them once again.

"Not sure you can.. but if you don't want me to hear what your thinking, sing a favorite song in your head." Kaylee points out helpfully, giving him a smile. "But no needing to apologies really." he's quiet for a moment as they pass some workers. "Around here… You'll meet a lot of people with that special genetic make up. And just about everyone working this project…." Her hands spread wide and she does a little turn as she walks, indicating the whole team there working. "… is sympathetic to our kind. Not all of them, but most of the important ones."

As he nods slowly, Harrison begins to sing a song he wrote in his head. The young man has some talent and a good singing voice…very smooth and kind of jazzy. He walks with her listening intently as he stops singing in his mind and looks around at the various people. "You know people will harm you if they find out. That would be horrible…you know that. Some might hate the fact your helping the poor." He sighs, "I know a few people in the frat house who hate Evolves."

"Oh, I know that very well," Kaylee comments blandly. "We even get harmed by our own kind. In fact, I have a permanent condition put on me by someone evolved. It's not curable, but as long as I don't do certain things…. I stay healthy." She glances at him from out of the corner of her eye. "It's all in who you know… I can help you some what with that… Helping here is a good thing in that sense, we watch each other's backs when it comes to the bad people."

"I guess everything in the universe must have a good with the bad and vice versa." Harrison nods slowly as he looks down at his hands, "I am sorry to hear that you have been harmed by someone like us." He seems sincere in that as his thoughts are sincere as well. "I have never tried to harm someone with my ability. In fact I quit Senior ball so I could be sure that I would not shift and harm someone by accident."

"It's a lifestyle change.. and what happened to me." Kaylee stops and turns toward him, a hand placed on his arm to stall him. "I don't regret it, it brought me here and I'm actually a better person for it I think." Her hand drops away as she gives him a matter of look, "Look, I guess what I'm saying is, while your here, you don't have to worry so much. These are really good people, with great hearts. They help the poor.. they help each other. They protect themselves from the worse of our world. Stick around and you'll see."

Kaylee turns and starts to walk again, "Being what we are in general is dangerous, but your among friends here. Not saying being here will be without it's trouble, but your safer around us."

As he walks with her, his mind is spinning. He is a young musician who tends to have a lot on his mind. He nods slowly as he walks giving Kaylee a side glance, Harrison asks, "So…when you say more of you…or us. Are you saying alot of you or a few of you who are…well like you and I?" He stops and hmmms, "That made sense in my mind."

"Some of me." Kaylee offers, her tone amused. "And yes.. like you and me. There are also those not like us as well.. Just.. don't go advertising what you are. We have a lot of clueless volunteers here." She has a small smile on her lips as she waves to another set of workers. "Your not alone in this world… Now…." Her head turns to consider him. "You mentioned thinking that I would send people after you.. Has it happened to you before?"

"No…I have kept what I can do a secret all of my life. There is only one person who knows what I can do…well two. My brother Brandon. He is really smart. He is attending Yale and since the first Evolved revealed themselves he has told me to keep it a secret for as long as I can. I will be safer that way. And the drunk driver who almost hit my brother. When he told the police they though he was crazy." Harrison chuckles softly, "This was just before the first Evolved."

Nodding slowly, Kaylee listens. "Well that's good at least. There are groups within the government that snatch our kind up. So I figured I'd check. I know people that were picked up and put in prisons just cause the government thought their abilities were too dangerous… even though they were good people." Hands are pushed deep into her pockets and she pauses in her journey. "Either way. I am sorry about freaking you out, but admittedly that is about the normal reaction towards what I can do." Her mouth tugs up into a smirk. "I hope that you'll still consider working out here. We can use the hands."

As he nods slowly, "Well I might be more useful in my other form…" He pauses before he reveals to much, "Did you look into my mind and see what I can do?" He asks curiously, "Well if it works like that…not sure what to say, explains Harrison.

"I…. wouldn't do that." Kaylee starts glancing around slowly. "Like I said.. We have some volunteers that are not clued in. A lot of people here don't know I'm a telepath.. and I try to keep it that way." Giving him a significant look, before continuing. "And I have seen what you can do in your mind.." A hand comes out of her pocket to point at his forehead. "It a precarious life we live. People are aware of the fact we are out there, but they are scared of it too.. It's best not to armor up like that unless you can't help it.. such as.." She motions to him, "The case of the drunk driver."

As he nods, "That…well that kind of happens. I am not sure how to explain it but when I am in danger my body takes over and it switches on his own. I am still kind of learning about it." He chuckles, "Sorry never mind…so you know my secret and I know yours. I will try and control my thoughts around you." Harrison runs a hand through his hair looking around the area.

"Understandable." She gives a jerk of her head and moves to continue towards a house at the end of the drive. "Hmm.. I'll do some checking, maybe someone can help give some tips on how to teach you how to get better control. Mostly so that you don't end up being picked up." Eyeing the area she sighs softly. "Great.. looks like Jason is on break again. You'll meet him one of these days. Good guy." Crouching down to retrieve a pair of hedge sheers, she offers one too him. "We're cutting the growth back." The bushes of this house have been left to grow rather wild.

As he nods slowly, Harrison looks at what Kaylee is doing for a moment, and then begins to add his help to her project. "I have gotten better in my control. I practice in my dorm room when no one is around. And of they try and pick me up…I am sorry I am not going…I do not like the idea of being someone's lab rat. I have heard stories that scare the hell out of me."

"They have their ways." Kaylee starts blandly, starting in on her hedge. "Or that's what I've been told by a former employer of mine.Either way.. just gotta keep your head down." The clippers making soft snipping noises as she works.

The hedges are a hell of a lot of work and Kaylee falls into silence mostly as she turns thoughtful.——
