Scene Title Sydney, NY
Synopsis Magnes welcomes Sydney to New York and explains how dangerous it is. Sydney is cautious of strange New York men!
Date December 3, 2008

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is located on the westernmost point of Long Island and shares its only land boundary with Queens. The East river borders and defines the borough's northern coast, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan beach are to the south, and the Narrows separate it from Staten Island to the southwest.

Downtown Brooklyn is one of the NYC's largest business districts. Between the Bridge and Prospect Park, brownstones, townhouses, and high-end restaurants are dominant. The culturally diverse communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint are snugged against the East River to the far north. Close by are far more criminally active neighborhoods such as Brownsville, Crown Heights, and Bushwick. Regardless of the social situation, the so-called Borough of Neighborhoods is packed to the gills in post-bomb NYC.

It is way later then she wanted to arrive here in New York. Also it is FREAKING cold! The well tanned pretty girl is finishing with piling up all her stuff together. Moving from the Caribbean is starting to look less a good idea. But she has money and is far from helpless. First order of business is getting a warmer coat and then a place. Sydney rubs her hands together and looking over the ruins of the city. "Damn this place did get messed up."

Magnes has just made his last delivery of the night, now just generally skating around Fulton and getting a feel for the neighborhood in case he has to come back. He spots the woman getting her things together, and despite his extreme shyness, chilvalry wins as he rolls over to her and awkwardly rubs the back of his head. "Ah, um, do you need help?"

Sydney turns to look up at the owner of the voice. Those brown eyes study him for a moment taking in the features that make him up. "Depends I guess. Just got off the ferry." Motioning to the boat a bit out a ways as it moves. She points to the bridge. "That's the Brooklyn bridge right?" She hasn't been here before and getting to know the city may take a little work.

Magnes, whom happens to be wearing a small chef's hat at the moment, nods to her. "Yeah, that's the Brooklyn Bridge, you're in Brooklyn right now! I know the city pretty well, I'm a delivery boy. I can get you anywhere in 60 minutes or less." he assures with a light laugh, his cheeks slightly red.

Sydney laughs a bit as she smiles, showing off her neat white teeth. "What about me and my stuff? Because that is what I need more then traveling across town leaving everything here. If you know the city you can tell me where there may be some affordable housing open?"

"Well, Brooklyn is kind of the most crowded area in New York I think, you might have trouble here. I don't think Chinatown is very cheap, you could try Lower East Side, but I don't know a lot about real estate." Magnes rolls over to her bags, reaching down but looking up at her to see if it's alright. "I live with Mister Panucci, he might give you a room if you pull your weight in the shop, until you find a place."

Sydney watches the reach but doesn't give any sign one way or the other about how she feels with him picking up a bag. "Who is Mr. Panucci? I can try the Lower East Side. Is that on the other side of the water or this one?"

"This side, might take a while to get there, but I can take you. I don't really know the transportation routes and stuff, I just skate everywhere." Magnes looks down at her bags again, then just decides to pick them up, but he doesn't go anywhere. "Can you afford a taxi? Might be expensive, but it's better than getting lost on the bus."

Sydney has her share of bags and one of the ones that Magnes picks up is fairly heavy. She takes several of her own bags loading up her shoulders and stuff. "Yeah I got money for a cab. Unless they're a real fortune then I may be tight but it be best to use a cab with all this stuff. I only just got through customs from the ship I came off. So who's this Mister Panucci?"

"Oh, sorry, I forgot to say, Mister Panucci is my boss, he took me in after the Sylar bomb thing. My parents are still out of town, I haven't spoken to them in like two years I think." Magnes explains, carrying her bags in the search for a taxi, but stays close. "Since I make him money by being a really good delivery boy, he doesn't mind me staying over the shop."

Sydney adjusts the straps some to get more comfortable as she joins in the search for a cab. Isn't there a million of them in the city or something. "What do you deliver and you were here when the bomb went off? I was on my way out of the country and only got some reports. Never bothered to listen to it all."

"I saw the flash, it was the most horrifying thing I ever saw. And I deliver pizza. 60 minutes or less, anywhere in the city!" Magnes says enthusiastically, quickly finding a small cluster of cabs near the sidewalk. "I can give you a menu if you want, not many pizza places deliver city wide unless they're a chain."

Sydney pauses at that. "Like real New York you gotta fold it pizza? If so then we could head there. I could use with some food. I've been on a boat for about seven hours. Tides kept us out. Cabs stop by your place right? So I can get a ride home after some food."

"My place is on a small street, but you can still call a cab pretty easily. And yeah, I even know how to make it!" Magnes confirms, leaning into the open cab window and talking to the guy for a moment, then he looks back at her. "He knows how to get there, if you're sure you wanna go." The driver pops the trunk for them, seeing all the bags they have.

Sydney wants to be sure she is clear. "You're job I mean." She isn't looking to be picked up. "We can get a meal, and I'll help you and your boss out. Then I'll get a cab and head out to the East Village or whatever." She start to load in her bags after checking the cab number and what he looks like. She is a touch suspicious to say the least. There are stories about this city now.

Magnes laughs uneasily, obviously not totally confident, but he carefully places bags into the trunk as she does, listening in case she says something is delicate. "Well, my job /is/ my place, but I know what you mean. It'll be on me, since you're new to the city and all."

Sydney lifts a brow. "You sure? I don't mind I knew this city is expensive and came a little prepared." She slips into the cab when it is time and huddles up. "Oh thank god heating! Is it always this cold here?" She is used to tropics.

Magnes has nothing on to protect him from the cool air, but that's because he didn't plan to be out long. He slides into the cab with her, closing the door before rubbing his arms. "Mostly when it's winter, it might even snow soon, it's almost Christmas. And this is Brooklyn, it's not really as expensive as the places closer to Manhattan."

Sydney seems surprised to hear Christmas is so close. "That explains all the decorations and music. I had almost forgotten. Right now something warm to drink and pizza sounds good to me." She looks into her purse to check the money she has. This trip will let her know what to expect. "I should get a map too. Something of the subway."

"I can't help a lot there, I'm mostly used to seeing the city from rooftops, it seems really small when you're high up." Magnes reaches into his pocket and pulls out a Nintendo DS, beginning to play a game. He keeps their sitting distance a good foot or two, making no effort to get closer. "My name's Magnes."

Sydney glances at the man next to her and rubs her hands more. Shivering some and bouncing her legs up and down to get warm. "Sydney, and glad I bumped into you. So lived in New York all your life?"

"Yeah, mostly in Brooklyn, I sorta regret not spending much time in Midtown while I still could." Magnes admits with a slightly saddened tone, the taxi mostly cutting through small streets, but the guy apparently knows where he's going. "And New York is pretty dangerous, I was shot recently." He puts his DS down and raises his shirt, showing a long line across his ribs, but it's apparently mostly healed and just a shallow healing graze now.

"How much have they rebuilt," Syd asks. If any city is quick to bound back it be this one right? The news he got shot really appears to upset her some. "You're lucky to be alive. Someone try to rob you or what?"

"I don't think they've rebuilt all that much, the blast site is still radioactive, but many neighborhoods have been declared radiation free and people can live in them again." Magnes lowers his shirt as the taxi drives through a small nice looking but modestly inexpensive looking neighborhood. "It's kinda complicated, this girl I know was gonna get punched in the head by this guy, because he was trying to save her after she crashed on her scooter, because this guy got thrown from an apartment window. But since the guy punching her shot at me before, I thought he was trying to hurt her, so I tried to tackle him. But while I was trying to tackle him, the guy who threw the other guy out of the window shot me because he's crazy." he explains the pretty confusing situation, one of those 'had to be there' type things. "You follow?" he asks with a chuckle.

Sydney look at Magnes for a bit and then shakes her head. "Nope. Would have needed names to follow that so I would be sure who was doing what. Near as I can tell you tried to help someone and got hurt for it." She can't help but think that it is a fool thing to stick your neck out for others. Everyone always betrays you or lets you down eventually. But she just smile some, "glad you made it and can't wait for pizza. Thanks for this Magnes."

"I got hurt, but if you keep doing enough good things, no matter how much you get beat down, eventually it pays off in the end." Magnes offers his possibly naive words of wisdom as the taxi stops in front of a small pizza shop that seems to have a small apartment on the second floor. "We're here, I'll get your stuff." he steps out to let her pay the guy, then goes around to the trunk and starts gathering her things. Somehow he manages to take most of the bags out, not really thinking about it as he carries them toward the shop.

Sydney she pays for the cab and takes note of the number on the side for later. Then gets her stuff inside where the pizza parlor is to see about an order. "Thanks again Magnes. Maybe we'll see each other again. Don't get shot anymore. Bullets are bad for the health I hear."
