The Chinese Vanguard once held its fulcrum on a single leader, Gongmu. A believer of Kazimir Volken's bigoted regime despite being Evolved, he was convinced that a select few abilities transcended the curse, including some cyberpaths, because they eventually conferred the capacity to leave the physical body and therefore the genetic blight. He later discovered that he wasn't capable of this trick, but his change of heart did not come before he tried to assist Volken in killing his own son, Ningdao, an Evolved. Ningdao somehow survived, though not without bearing a hideous mark of Volken's ability, and sabotaged the Chinese Vangurd from the inside with help from the People's Liberation Army of China.

During a project researching the nuclear device known as MUnin with the government, he was formerly part of the technopathic presence informally referred to as the 'Behemoth.' However, when K.Apila, R.Ajas and T.Monk began to hack the actual cyberpath he was augmenting, Shen turned against his partner and tried (unsuccessfully) to destroy him before he was engulfed and assimilated into a new being: Rebel. These changes ain't changing me,
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out,
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back-burner.
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul,
But I'm not a soldier
