Background

Iris Earhart never meant to get stuck in America. She never should have left her home in Britain, her flat above the bookstore. But in 2012, that's exactly what she did. Hearing about the chaos and atrocities in the US should have served to keep her away, but instead it drove her to journey to the troubled nation, books in hands and hope in her heart with the goal of helping people.

And then the situation deteriorated. She found attempts to leave the country thwarted or outright denied several times; eventually as things got worse, she was forcibly tested for the Suresh Linkage Complex upon attempting to return to her home country.

You'd think that when she tested positive they wouldn't want her anymore. Well, secretly, neither did the United Kingdom. Trapped away from home, Iris was detained indefinitely, before finally being moved to the Outer District in New York once it was deemed safe to do so.

Chipped to negate an ability she never knew she had and never had the chance to explore, Iris tried hard to adjust to her new life. She felt kind of uncertain and listless, turning to an old beaten up copy of Great Expectations to get her by. It took time, but by 2017, Iris Earhart has found a calling within the Outer District - she runs one of the City's only book repositories, and is often on the hunt for whatever books and literature she can salvage, buy off people. Her selection is carefully curated by the DoEA, but… well. What she gets ahold of that they don't know about? That's what her basement is for. Every book deserves to be read, after all.

Psych Profile

Even if hopeless times such as these, Iris still tries to put up a bright front. She enjoys her life as a bookseller in a city that reminds her of something from a Neil Stephenson book, or worse, George Orwell, as much as she can. She is often trying to cheer up people around her in whatever small ways she can, just like Prime Iris.

This Iris, however, has a bit more of a rebellious streak. She misses home, and wants to return. She doesn't buy into the life the DoEA has fed them. While she doesn't blatantly join resistance efforts out of fear for her life, she does find her own small ways to rebel - chiefly in the small market of banned, redacted, and otherwise contraband literature she keeps in her basement hidden or with the dust jackets swapped, mixed in among normal stock so that she can claim some degree of "Oh shoot, I didn't realise!". She supports rebellious attitudes on the down low, and will even act as a link in a smuggling chain if she thinks it will help.

So far, no one has come to burn her precious books. She lives in fear of the day her life turns into Fahrenheit 451 but at this point it's a risk she's willing to take.
